Retro News & Chat / Re: Worst Games Ever?

On the Atari 2600 - ET is legendary, but my personal favourite nadir is Karate by Froggo. An astonishing piece of nothingness.

PC Engine - Takeda Shingen - looks like a Commodore 64 reject... and plays a hell of a lot worse.

Spectrum - Zaxxon- an isometric scrolling shooter programmed little over a year after the 48K model was released has the potential to be disastrous. Potential fulfilled.
Spectrum - Super Soccer - nothing super about this piece of undeveloped crap

Gameboy - Alleyway - playable if you're the slowest, most useless gamer of all time. To everyone else, it's a mind-numbingly easy attempt at Breakout.

Commodore 64 - Save Me, Bright Knight - an early attempt at something or other; quite what exactly, I'm still not sure.
Commodore 64 - Bomb Jack  - it bombed.

Amstrad CPC464 - Everything ever released on the machine.

The C64 version is superb, though was released on cartridge only, meaning it wasn't easy to find over in Britain. The 2600 version was creditable, while the Spectrum never had an official version, though Ocean had a good stab with their 1984 knock-off "Pogo". The Colecovision release, similar to the C64, is also fine.

A PAL 2600 will play NTSC games in 60hz. Apparently the colours are a bit off, but not having any other versions I couldn't tell.

I have loads of NTSC games and as long as you have a compatible TV they play in 60hz. Some games (mainly Activision) have strange colours.

Yeah the colours are always off because of the difference in the two TV formats (green shows as blue, for example). It looks shit in a lot of games and is not really an option. You've gotta have the NTSC one.

I don't know if I could bring myself to mod my ZX81 or Atari 2600

On the 2600 it's definitely worth it, Alan, as the colours are much brighter and stronger. More importantly you get the chance to play these old games the way they were intended- at full speed and full screen if you mod an NTSC model.

General Retro Chat / Re: What's Your Favourite Controller?

I think the PC Engine Duo controller is superb- I've hammered away at it and not felt soar afterwards. The original white PCE controller isn't quite as accurate, but also decent enough.

I think we can forgive the size of the sprite, it's obviously done that way for a particular reason which escapes me right now... Overall it looks pretty damn sick.
