Story of Thor

Apart from the non-backlit screen (a mod is available to add a back light) the machine is fantastic.
Great games, the batteries last for ages, great build quality with fantastic joystick and buttons.

There are quite a few but from the ones I owned.......

That's the best place for them! 
Never liked those 8-way discs.

Yep, with 30 hu-cards and a home-made (not by me) scart connection.

Up until last year I had a Core Grafx II.
Great system, looks brilliant just didn't have the time for it. 

4-player NBA Jam was fantastic.

As for which gaming platform I would never let go then I don't think there is one. It's only video games and they're not that important in the grand scheme of things.

It's just a bit of fun but just to let you know, there is no "grand scheme of things".
Whatever you hold as "important" is ultimately, not, when you're gone. 

Another vote for cartridge based systems here.
As for the cost, I can buy an 8GB sd card for £5.
To a major games manufacturer who'd be buying hundreds of thousands (millions?) this
cost would be massively reduced.
Regarding slow read times, they could come up with a system that compensates that very easily.

Let's not forget the DS survived easily enough on carts.
