Retro News & Chat / Arcade Ambience Project
August 09, 2015, 16:20:51 PM
I thought maybe this had been posted before but I couldn't find it. The person behind this has put together the sounds of Arcade machines into four,  year specific soundtracks, and it's really cool!

You can download them or they're on YouTube too. Great background music when playing retro games :69:

Retro News & Chat / SNK making games again!
August 06, 2015, 20:09:21 PM
Sounds like this has been in the works for a while now and according to a number of Chinese websites the deal is done.

http://dreamcancel.com/2015/08/06/snk-p ... e-company/

At the bottom of the story is three sources, and if you use translate they are all saying the same thing. Also according to the one site they are going to be dropping the Playmore from the name and will be known as SNK again.

To me this sounds like good news so hopefully it all works out. Playmore has done hardly anything with the brand, other than a few mobile games and the commercial disaster that was the Neo Geo X. So many great IP's that need to be rebooted, and using  the "Marvel formula" like it says in the article sounds like a great idea!

Just saw this and thought people might be interested. https://hucastgames.wordpress.com/2015/ ... dreamcast/

Both of these games were released on the Jaguar last year, and now they are DC bound. These are point and click games in the style of Myst, so if you're a fan of the genre you should really enjoy them :)

Retro News & Chat / The story of NHL 94
March 19, 2015, 16:24:01 PM
I just read this http://readonlymemory.vg/john-madden-hockey/ and thought it was great!

NHL 94 is my favourite sports games ever, but even if you're not a fan of sports games, or this game in particular, give it a read. It's a little long, but it talks a lot about the early days at EA when they were just getting into sports games and I really enjoyed it :)

Retro News & Chat / Retro VGS: New Retro Game Console
February 18, 2015, 15:42:53 PM
Yep you read that correct, someone is trying to make a brand new cartridge based game console! Mike Kennedy, AKA @ReadRetro is the person behind it, and this is also the guy who runs the video game auction site GameGavel and the magazine Retro.

Here's a link to NintendoAge where it's talked about http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messag ... did=141995

To be honest, it's not a bad idea. From what I'm reading it sounds like they want to get all the indie developers on board that make all these 8 and 16 bit style games that are all the rage right now. I'll admit, a lot of my favourite game of last gen were small downloadable games from these indie game studios, and a console that plays nothing but those type of games on cartridge is very appealing.

The look of the console will be very cool, as they have bought the original Atari Jaguar console and cartridge molds! For those who weren't aware, when the Jag went bust a dental company bought all the molds and started manufacturing dental equipment out of them. The company that owns them have been trying to sell them for a few years now, so it worked out pretty good.

I can't say I'm 100% sold on this though. I love the sound of it and really hope they can make it work, but I think the cost of the games on cartridge might be a big problem. Like I said, I love these retro style games that I can download on PSN, Xbox Live etc. They're great games that only cost a few dollars on IOS or Andorid, and a little bit more on the consoles. Would I still love these games if I had to pay $50 and up? Unfortunately I don't think I would for the most part. I don't know exactly how much games would cost if this went ahead, but cartridge components are expensive, just look at the price difference between homebrew games on CD and cart.

Anyway, just wanted to talk about this and see what everyone else thinks. Good idea or bad? Maybe ReadRetro will come around and fill us in a bit more :)

Marketplace / My Retro Game Box
February 05, 2015, 20:01:38 PM
This is really cool! It's a new service similar to Loot Crate, but with this one you only get games. Here's the link http://www.myretrogamebox.com/

It costs 35 USD a month and you get a random selection of games from the NES, SNES, N64, all the Game Boy's, the Master System, and the Genesis/MD. You can also tell them what kind of games you like and don't like ahead of time, so for instance if you don't want sports games they wont include any. They're based out of Scotland, so shipping for the UK is free and it's $6 for anywhere else in the world.

From what I can tell it looks like it's brand new and the first shipment was just sent out to people. On their site is a few unboxing videos and reviews from people who received their first box and they seem to be happy with the results. I'm going to look into it a bit further, but right now I'm tempted to sign up!

I've been saying I was going to take some pictures for a couple years now, and I finally did!
First off is my Neo Geo CD collection which has gotten pretty big and I may actually go for a complete set. I have a couple more on the way, at which point I will be about 36 games short.

That's it for now, but I will add more later :)

Retro News & Chat / Desert Island Game
October 23, 2014, 20:02:29 PM
We did this once before, but that thread asked for ten games that you would want to have with you if stuck on an island. Ten is too easy so I thought we could try it again, but this time you only get ONE game. One game to play for the rest of your life(you're not getting rescued :)

So, start thinking everyone and let us know what your choice is!

Homebrew Chat / New Dreamcast Game SLaVE!
September 11, 2014, 05:05:20 AM
Just got this email from the Goat Store!

QuoteHello:

Yesterday, we announced a new Dreamcast project with our partners Isotope and Jay Townsend called SLaVE, an extremely unique first person game inspired by arcade hits of the past like Robotron.  The game is going to be an extremely limited run - only 484 copies will be sold - and it's available for pre-order now at goatstore.com.  84 of those copies are a Limited Limited Edition, and 400 of them are a "standard" Limited Edition.

For more details, check out the whole news release at www.goatstorepublishing.com, which also got a facelift.

Unfortunately, when we went to send the email yesterday, our mail server had an issue and our email announcement for you was not sent!  If you are interested in the game, especially the LLE, please head to the GOAT Store web site as soon as possible to place your order, as we expect copies will sell out within the next 24 hours.

The LE version of the game is also selling briskly, but has better availability currently.

Thanks for your support, and we can't wait to keep bringing you fun new projects like SLaVE and the upcoming Hypertension: Harmony of Darkness!

It's not scheduled to ship until next April, but if you want a copy you better act fast. I just ordered a LLE version  :)

Retro News & Chat / Holy Grail Games
July 24, 2014, 20:14:24 PM
Everybody has them, elusive games that we desperately want to own someday. Be it rarity, price, or both, we haven't been able to add them to our collections.

For me it used to always be a game called Lucienne's Quest for the 3DO. It was a very late release for the system and was made in limited quantities. A couple years ago I managed to track down a disk only copy so I was finally able to play the game, and I loved it and was overjoyed that I finally had it in my collection. Still though, I really want the box and manual to go along with it so it's still on my list, just not quite as high now.

Other than that there's a few Neo Geo CD games and Jaguar games that I would love to own someday if I can find them at the right price. Most of the time it's the price that makes them hard to get over the rarity, but if you're patient you can get lucky. Snatcher for the Sega CD falls into that category for me. There's plenty of copies out there, but they still go for a lot of money and I'm waiting for a good deal on it.

So, what are they? What are those games that you're dying to own?

Retro News & Chat / Sega buys Atlus!!!
September 18, 2013, 15:06:03 PM
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/09/18/report-sega-to-purchase-atlus-parent-company-for-14-billion/

It was only a rumor at first but it's now been confirmed, you can see the update at the bottom of the Joystiq article. Pretty big news if you ask me and a very good business decision by Sega.

Atlus makes some of the best RPGs around and are very well respected in the gaming community. I was actually kinda hoping Nintendo would buy them as it would have made the Wii U a must have console for a lot of people but this is good too.

A little bit of dreaming here, but I really believe that Sega could re-enter the console market with this purchase. In Japan anyway it would be a must own with the extensive Atlus library and for a lot of people outside of Japan too.

Retro News & Chat / Kickstarter Projects
June 28, 2013, 19:23:09 PM

A Kickstarter campaign has been launched for a PS1 style JRPG.
The initial goal has already been met so they announced a ton of stretch goals.

They just passed the $80,000 mark so a Wii U, Vita, and PS4 version are all coming.
At $15 for a digital download of the game it's a great price so I just backed it.
If you're into the genre check it out  :)

These games have been long sold out and go for obscene amounts of money on ebay.
If anybody is looking to play them this is a good alternative.

I'm sure everyone has seen the RetroN 3, it allowed you to play NES, SNES, and Genesis / MegaDrive games. Well they just announced the RetroN 5 and now you can add Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games to the list. I just might get one of these now.

General Retro Chat / 3DO Controller Extension Cable
March 11, 2013, 18:53:54 PM
I've been looking for one of these for a long long time! I'm actually starting to think it's just a myth that they made these as I'm pretty sure you would have an easier time finding Bigfoot then one of these.
I read somewhere that a FM Towns Marty extension cable would work but finding one of those is equally impossible so I gave up on that idea as well.
Read some more and found out that a MD/Genesis cable would work but because of the size of the moulding you would need to take a knife and trim the plastic a bit to get it to fit. Looked on Ebay and found out that the company that makes those Retron systems also makes brand new controller extension cables so I bought one for 10 bucks and gave it a shot.
I'm happy to report that it works and also because this isn't the official Sega branded one it's a bit smaller and no modification needed. It's a very tight fit but it does fit and works great  :113:

General Retro Chat / CRT or LCD
November 20, 2012, 17:15:50 PM
I did a search and didn't find any topic about this so hopefully it hasn't been done already.  I used to have all my retro consoles hooked up to an old CRT TV but over the last little while I've been slowly moving most of them to my LCD TV. It started out as a comfort thing as my CRT is in my bedroom with just a chair to sit in and the LCD is in the living room with my big couch to spread out on. I have left the 8 and 16 bit consoles with the CRT as they look like crap on the LCD but everything from the 3DO on has been moved now. I'm using S video for most of them and I have to say from my point of view they actually look better now and  the color is much more vibrant on the LCD. I'm sure there are purists here who will disagree so let's hear it. At what console generation do you switch from CRT to LCD or for the people who don't play modern consoles do you use LCD at all?
