Marketplace / Yakuza Reprints
April 19, 2018, 22:25:51 PM
Not sure if there's any fans of this series around here, but if you are this might be of interest.

Video Games Plus is an online retailer here in Canada that have recently started paying to get reprints made of old video games, including the first four Yakuza games. 1 and 2 for the PS2 and 3 and 4 for the PS3 are all available to buy brand new for pretty good prices. I believe they have free international shipping too.

I think it's really cool that they are doing this. Hopefully there's more of these reprints in the works.

Edit: I should add that these are the NTSC versions. The PS3 games might be region free but the PS2 games would definitely have to be played on a modded system if you're in another region.

Looks like Twin Galaxies have finally seen enough evidence that Mitchell was cheating and they have wiped out all of his high score records and banned him from ever competing again!

I've never liked the guy ever since I watched the movie The King of Kong so this is great news to me.

Retro News & Chat / Super Retro-Cade
December 07, 2017, 19:56:13 PM
Retro Bit have been coming out with some very interesting products lately, and their latest looks really cool!

This is another plug and play console with over 90 games from the four companies in the picture above already pre-installed. Full game list and other info here.

It's supposed to be available on the 15th and you can pre-order it on Amazon right now, but I'm going to wait for reviews first. They released a similar product last year that got terrible reviews over the emulation, controllers, and serious lag so it's probably best to wait and see if this one is improved or not.

Retro News & Chat / RetroBit Multicarts
December 01, 2017, 15:51:00 PM

Interesting new project from RetroBit.

They're up for pre-order on Amazon and priced between $29.99 and $34.99 USD which is pretty reasonable.

More info and links on their site, http://retro-bit.com/multi-cartridges

Guess it depends what the emulation is like but I'm tempted to buy a couple of them.

Atari Chat / Atari Jaguar Kitty Box
September 13, 2017, 14:58:00 PM
Now this is interesting! http://0711spiele.de/zubehoer/atari-jaguar-kitty-box-hdmi-adapter/

A little expensive, and a unit that could be used with multiple systems would be a much better deal, but still pretty cool. I don't really know much about the site and I've never ordered from them before but they have a few other Jaguar products that they sell as well.

With the popularity of retro gaming and all the clone systems being made it was only a matter of time before big companies got involved, and Capcom is the first.

iam8bit

For $100 this can be yours. . . yeah I'm gonna pass. Cool idea but way too much money, especially for such a common game. You can buy original copies of the game on ebay for $20, and they don't come with the following warning:

QuoteWARNING: Use of this reproduction game cartridge (the “Product”) on the SNES gaming hardware may cause the SNES console to overheat or catch fire. The SNES hardware is deemed a vintage collectible, so please exercise extreme caution when using the Product and make sure there is fire extinguishment equipment nearby. Use of the Product is at the sole risk of the user. The Product is sold “as is”.  Neither iam8bit, Inc. nor Capcom Co, Ltd. make any representation or warranty, express or implied, of any kind, including any warranty of merchantability of fitness for a particular use, or that the Product is safe to use, and iam8bit, Inc. or Capcom Co, Ltd. shall have no liability for damage to property or persons arising from use of the Product. Nintendo of America is in no way associated with the release of this Product.

It's been available to order since yesterday and there are still copies left out of the 5500 cart run. Perhaps if they weren't warning people about it catching on fire they would sell out quicker! I assume it will sell out though, and this will be the first of many more to come.

Piko Interactive have another Jag game coming, and you can pre-order it here. It's supposed to be shipping next month and the price isn't too bad at $59.99 USD.

I have the sequel for the Lynx but I've never played the original game. Looks good :)

Great article here about flash and multi carts that are poorly made and that could cause problems.

The guy who wrote the article makes a lot of retro devices and adapters that Retro Towers in the UK and Stone Age Gamer in the US sell so he's pretty knowledgeable about all of it.

Anybody own any of the ones he says to avoid?

Retro News & Chat / Rarest Basketball Game Ever?
June 30, 2017, 17:26:13 PM
Just saw this article on Eurogamer about a very rare Pal version of the game Lakers versus Celtics and the NBA Playoffs. Pretty cool story.

Here's the ebay auction for it that is currently at £8,300.00!

Anyone making a bid?  :P

Retro News & Chat / SNES Classic
June 26, 2017, 19:30:59 PM
I think we all knew this was coming, but Nintendo has made it official and announced a new mini console based on the SNES.

Nice selection of games and the inclusion of the unreleased Star Fox 2 is very cool, but at 21 total it seems a little small to me. I'm sure it will sell like crazy though, now we just have to see how many they produce!

Retro News & Chat / Atari Pong Coffee Table
March 14, 2017, 18:25:37 PM
Just saw this Kickstarter for this very cool Pong table. It's licensed by Atari too.

Before anyone gets too excited I should mention the cheapest one you can get is $900, and that's an early bird price. They get much more expensive after that but if anyone is feeling rich it would be awesome to have. I wish them luck but that's a lot of money they're asking for!

There's a good article here that has a lot of info if anyone wants to know more.

The funny thing about this is that I learned about it from an email from Retro Magazine and Mike Kennedy. Apparently he's not scrapping the magazine and his online store is now an official retailer for Retro-Bit. If anyone wants to pre-order the console from him, you can do so here. I'm sure it will be available other places too if for some reason people would rather not order it from him ;)

Homebrew Chat / New Genesis/MD Game Papi Commando
September 09, 2016, 15:24:10 PM
I received an email from WM MGF about a new game that is available now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k90V4jadE1I

You can order the game here. There's a regular and a limited edition. The limited edition comes with a clam shell case where as the regular just has the cover to put in your own case, like they did with their last release.

Good looking game!

Homebrew Chat / Zia and the Goddesses of Magic
August 25, 2016, 20:02:23 PM
I thought there was a thread about this game already but I couldn't find it. This is another homebrew game from Orion and it looks really good. It's available for both PS1 and Dreamcast and you can buy it here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab03AjATB48

I saw a tweet from Orion earlier today and he said he needed to sell 70 more copies of the game before he breaks even and starts making money from the game. So, if you appreciate the work he did in releasing a couple Jaguar games and the work he continues to do with PS1 and Dreamcast games, help the guy out and buy a copy :)

Retro News & Chat / Nintendo Power Archive
August 03, 2016, 15:05:50 PM
This is pretty cool, every issue of the first 13 years of Nintendo Power magazine are now available online. You can read them all here and you can download them as a PDF too.

The only time I ever had a subscription was when they were giving away the Zelda Collection for the Gamecube as a bonus, so these will all be new to me. I have a lot of reading to do :)

Retro News & Chat / Mini NES
July 14, 2016, 15:03:27 PM

Nintendo has just announced the Mini NES, a plug and play console pre-loaded with 30 games. It's supposed to be out this November with a price of $60. Not sure what the price will be in other regions.

You can read more about it here and see the full list of games.

The controller that comes with it will also double as a Wii or Wii U controller for playing Virtual Console games on those systems and you can also use Wii and Wii U Pro controllers on the Mini.

Personally I think $60 for 30 games is a little expensive but I'm sure they will sell a ton of these this Christmas!

Retro News & Chat / Sega Saturn's DRM Cracked
July 12, 2016, 19:28:30 PM
Great new for Saturn fans, and it only took 23 years! You can read about it here . From my understanding the reason there is no real homebrew market for the Saturn is because of the DRM, so hopefully this gets people coding for it. Also the ability to load games from USB is very cool.

General Retro Chat / Neo Geo Museum
June 23, 2016, 20:05:26 PM
I'm not sure how long this site has been around for, but it's the first I've seen of it.

Neo Geo Museum

It's a pretty cool site that has a complete catalog of all games plus promotional advertisements and other info. If you're a fan of the system or just want to learn more about it this is a great resource!

Yep, 25 years ago today the first Sonic game was released! Who else is feeling old?

Supposedly they are working on a new game, but considering the quality of the last few Sonic games I'm not going to get too excited!

There's a Humble Bundle available right now to celebrate if anyone is interested.

I still think the original 16 bit games are some of the best platformers ever made :)

Retro News & Chat / Dreamcade Replay on Kickstarter
June 22, 2016, 17:19:57 PM

Dreamcade Replay

I think this just launched today, and it sounds very cool! You can read all about it on the Kickstarter page, but basically it's a streaming/emulator box but you can also get the arcade controller or an all in one cabinet. It's expensive but it's running on Windows 10 and has a lot of functions.
