Retro News & Chat / International Play Your Vectrex Day!
September 16, 2012, 19:11:12 PM
Hi all!  I'm sharing this from the Vectrex forums I frequent:

THE RULES:

1. On November 1, PLAY YOUR VECTREX.
2. Make a note of what game(s) you played.  Your name will also be needed as part of the record for the International Play Your Vectrex Day wiki page (see end).

These two things are mandatory.  Everything else are bonuses, should you feel like going to the trouble:

3. Keep a record of your game(s') score(s).
4. Take a photo and/or make a video of your score(s), your Vectrex/collection, even make a drawing or gif or something that is Vectrex-related if you want, even an audio recording of you playing (if a recorder is all you have), but this HAS to be done on this day.  (This stuff can be turned in after November 1st, since the wiki page can be edited any day of the year, but at least do your playing/drawing/photos/whatever on this day.)
5. Send a link along to your YouTube channel or any other website you have (Facebook, Twitter) if you wish to promote it, just as long as whatever material on your website is work/family friendly (i. e. a PG-13 rating at worst).

The International Play Your Vectrex Day wiki page can be edited by anyone if they want to do it yourselves, an e-mail addy can be sent to Darrylb500 via either PM (along with any photos or anything else you wish to include), Darrylb500 can be contacted on Darrylb500's  page on the wiki, or it can be posted on this thread over at Vectrex Forums.  You can use just your first name, full name, or an internet handle for the page, just try to keep it in alphabetical order, whatever it is that you choose to do (although I'll be editing the page anyway as needed).

Darrylb500 also ask that any videos be linked to ONLY, NOT embedded onto the page, since he just wants a clean list without people having to scroll down with those making an untidy presentation.  Any photos or drawings will be put in a separate gallery after the game listings (which is linked to at the end of this page).  Any audio recordings will have to be put up on YouTube or some other hosting place since the Wikia company doesn't allow soundclips to be hosted on their wikis.

An accompanying video should be released somewhere between October 10-15 on YouTube.

Official wiki page where all this will happen/you can see how it looks as this comes along:

Retro News & Chat / Let's Compare Double Dragon
September 14, 2012, 22:37:06 PM
There are so many versions of Double Dragon, that this needs two separate videos! The first one has 7 different versions and the second has another 7.  The 7800 version could have benefited from a POKEY chip!  I'm impressed at how well the Lynx version holds up too.  Enjoy!

Homebrew Chat / Games For Your Intellivision
September 14, 2012, 02:37:10 AM
This was posted in AA.  Figured I'd share it here:

Defender of the Crown, as you probably know, has been 'coming soon' for the Intellivision for years. It is fairly complete, and quite amazing what has been done so far. We REALLY want to release this game.

Unfortunately, Arnauld no longer has time or motivation to complete the game.

Other programmers are reluctant to pick up someone else's program and complete it. Especially when it is not a walk in the park to complete the game.

We offer royalties to programmers for our games, but an awful lot of games will have to be sold in order to be able to pay a  programmer enough to finish the game. It will probably take a LOT of effort and time to complete it.

So, I have decided to start a kickstarter campaign to finish the game. We need a committe to put this kickstarter together.

We need to come up with a promotional video, show what has been done so far, and tell people what needs to be done to get this game finished and determine rewards for each donation level.

I am not prepared to invest the amount of money it will require to hire a programmer to finnish the game, print the materials, and HOPE that I get enough sales to make some money or even to break even.

If you are interested, please email mailto:gamesforyourintellivision@hotmail.com">gamesforyourintellivision@hotmail.com and we can try and get this project started.

Retro News & Chat / Let's Compare Pac-Man
September 13, 2012, 21:01:04 PM
Pac-Man is an arcade game developed by Namco and licensed for distribution in the United States by Midway, first released in Japan on May 22, 1980. Immensely popular from its original release to the present day, Pac-Man is considered one of the classics of the medium, virtually synonymous with video games, and an icon of 1980s popular culture. Upon its release, the gameâ€"and, subsequently, Pac-Man derivativesâ€"became a social phenomenon that sold a bevy of merchandise and also inspired, among other things, an animated television series and a top-ten hit single.

When Pac-Man was released, the most popular arcade video games were space shooters, in particular Space Invaders and Asteroids. The most visible minority were sports games that were mostly derivative of Pong. Pac-Man succeeded by creating a new genre and appealing to both genders. Pac-Man is often credited with being a landmark in video game history, and is among the most famous arcade games of all time. The character also appears in more than 30 officially licensed game spin-offs, as well as in numerous unauthorized clones and bootlegs.  According to the Davie-Brown Index, Pac-Man has the highest brand awareness of any video game character among American consumers, recognized by 94 percent of them. Pac-Man is one of the longest running video game franchises from the golden age of video arcade games, and one of only three video games that are on display at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. (along with Pong and Dragon's Lair).

GAME PLAY

The player controls Pac-Man through a maze, eating pac-dots. When all dots are eaten, Pac-Man is taken to the next stage, between some stages one of three intermission animations plays. Four enemies (Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde) roam the maze, trying to catch Pac-Man. If an enemy touches Pac-Man, a life is lost. When all lives have been lost, the game ends. Pac-Man is awarded a single bonus life at 10,000 points by defaultâ€"DIP switches inside the machine can change the required points or disable the bonus life altogether. Near the corners of the maze are four larger, flashing dots known as power pellets that provide Pac-Man with the temporary ability to eat the enemies. The enemies turn deep blue, reverse direction and usually move more slowly. When an enemy is eaten, its eyes remain and return to the center box where it is regenerated in its normal color. Blue enemies flash white before they become dangerous again and the amount of time the enemies remain vulnerable varies from one stage to the next, but the time period generally becomes shorter as the game progresses. In later stages, the enemies don't change colors at all, but still reverse direction when a power pellet is eaten.

Enemies

The enemies in Pac-Man are known variously as "ghosts" and "monsters". Despite the seemingly random nature of the enemies, their movements are strictly deterministic, which players have used to their advantage. In an interview, creator Toru Iwatani stated that he had designed each enemy with its own distinct personality in order to keep the game from becoming impossibly difficult or boring to play. More recently, Iwatani described the enemy behaviors in more detail at the 2011 Game Developers Conference. He stated that the red enemy chases Pac-Man, and the pink and blue enemies try to position themselves in front of Pac-Man's mouth. While he claimed that the orange enemy's behavior is random, a careful analysis of the game's code reveals that it actually chases Pac-Man most of the time, but also moves toward the lower-left corner of the maze when Pac-Man is facing a certain direction.
