Sega Chat / Re: What is your rarest sega item?
November 03, 2016, 12:49:02 PM
Also, it's not really 'rare', but I have a semi-consolized Naomi with a 512MB NetDimm and a Raspberry Pi configured as a dedicated file server. Arcade fun!

I have hundreds of Sega games and accessories but no idea about rarity. I have a CDX. I have MUSHA for the Genesis. I have a sealed World Series Baseball for the 32x. I have Panzer Dragoon Saga and Radiant Silvergun for the Saturn. I have Shenmue 2 for the Dreamcast.

There may be higher rarity games in my collection too, but I know those are some of the games where quality/demand keeps the prices high.

The site is still there, they just had to remove the hundreds of games flagged for using Nintendo IPs.

Gamejolt hosted hundreds of fan-made 'homages' with ripped Nintendo sprites, music, level design, etc. Biggest reason I agree with Nintendo's legal actions is because the site was earning ad revenue on both their main search pages and from ads popping up before playing individual games. If anyone is making money from stolen Nintendo IPs, they deserve to be shut down.

Has there been any mention of money going to the original authors/publishers? Or whether they even have legal permission to sell these? They're basically just old Atari ST retail games hacked to run on the Jaguar's 68000, right? Seems to be much closer to piracy than 'homebrew'.

Retro News & Chat / Re: Do you buy Homebrew games?

The latest update on Furyunlimited.com is that the remaining copies of Warrior are shipping in July/August... but he's posted false hope many times before. Didn't you order one too? Did yours arrive yet?

Plus, when you pre-order, you can run into problems like waiting forever for the actual item to be finished. I don't like dates being pushed back endlessly as with a recent Dreamcast purchase so it varies by system/dev/finances/tolerance.

I've been waiting longer than that for my Vectrex Warrior cart to arrive... I think it's been over 5 years since my pre-order.  >:(

I usually buy most of the homebrews for my favorite consoles. But, for me, the decision to purchase a homebrew is greatly affected by the developer. Since most homebrew developers participate on the related retro gaming forums, it's pretty easy to see who are positive members of a community and who are not. I'm happy to support Jaguar developers like Matthias and Orion, but there are others who I'd never give a penny... even if they released the greatest Jaguar game ever.

Announcements and Feedback / Re: Forum Layout

The new layout looks fine to me. :)

My only question would be which subforum should be used for multi-platform games?

New forum is off to a good start. :)

Will the new forum support a chat box? No hurry if it's still on the 'to do' list, just curious...

I don't know anything about importing. It would probably be much easier to just find a cab that's already in the UK... either ebay or uk arcade gaming forums like ukvac.com. If you're patient you can probably find something for a decent price and just pick it up.

Quote from: "davyk"Yeah - a JAMMA cabinet is a tempting proposition too. I'm torn if I'm honest.

Problem is it would open up the question of monitor configuration. Do I go for a vertical one for shmups or not? Would I need to get two?    :17:

I have two cabs... one horizontal and one vertical. But, some cabs like the Capcom Dynamo or Taito Egret 2 are designed to easily rotate the monitor. I think the Egret 2 even has the monitor mounted on a large wheel. Spin the monitor, bolt it in place, rotate the bezel, and you're done. The Capcom Dynamo takes a little more effort to rotate but still a quick process. Dynamo cabs are pretty common/cheap here from all the 90s Capcom fighting games (I have one), but the standard monitor is limited to 25" and only low res. Candy cabs like the Egret 2 or Astro City are usually larger screens (29") and some have multisync/trisync monitors so you can play 480p games from the 90s-newer in max resolution.

Congratulations on parting with so many games! Not an easy thing to do... but I bet your wife is very pleased.

I've been considering a massive clearout for a while. Now that I have everdrives/flash carts for most of my older systems, I never use original carts anymore. Overloaded storage bins and shelves in almost every room of the house. Not sure where I'd even start.

One suggestion about the arcade cabinet though... unless you're sure that you'd never get tired of playing Asteroids Deluxe, a large screen JAMMA cab would be much more versatile (and probably cheaper) as a first cab. Either a Capcom Dynamo or a candy cab like the Taito Egret 2 would let you play almost any arcade PCB and would let you rotate the monitor to vertical for shmups or arcade classics. There are many JAMMA multiboard options... some emulated and some that mimic original hardware. There are even genre specific JAMMA multiboards that are loaded with just shmups or fighting games.

Excellent! and probably a better game than the PS3 version...

Homebrew Chat / Re: New Vectrex Homebrew - Marine Fox!

Not bad... and it's a free download!

New Vectrex homebrews always remind me that I'm still waiting for Warrior to ship...
