I know there was a time at Atari where they wanted to feature colors on the games and they added background colors to games just for that reason.  That's why Pac-Man has the blue background.  By the time Kangaroo was released, though, I don't think they were pushing for that anymore so it is anyone's guess as to why they chose a blue background.  The game certainly looks much better with the black background, which is the background color of the arcade original.

You can get the hack here:  Kangaroo Black? - hack request
I never knew that about Atari wanting more colors in their games . I never noticed the bbackground color of Pac-Man until you just mentioned this  LOL   I just assumed there is a problem with putting a black background into the game for some reason

Well, time to acquaint yourself with it!  ;)  Of the home versions, the 2600 version would have looked better with a black background.  That version does indeed exist as a hack.

Wow, that looks so much better with the black background. I wonder why they didn't do this in the first place?

Introductions / PatmanQC would like to introduce himself

Hopefully you all have been enjoying my documentaries. I've been a gaming fan for over 40 years starting out with the basic black-and-white arcade bowling game which was just after Pong if I'm not mistaken.

I've collected everything since then from the Atari 2600 up to the Xbox one. Despite my being a quad amputee I'm still enjoying playing retro games. My latest history of documentary is on spy Hunter. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for having me.
