Is anyone on here planning to go along to this? I'm thinking about it. It's a bit out of the way but I missed the recent event down in London.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.... and 4 people are actually watching it. Admittedly this is probably just to see if anyone buys it, but still.

Yeah, those seem a bit out of whack. I'm not much of a buyer (don't have the room) but I keep an eye on eBay and you can definitely do better in terms of deals. I'm sure eventually, when working examples become scarce enough, prices will go up. Example: I used to have this Casio racing game watch as a kid that cost about £20 back in the 80s. Last year I fancied the idea of getting hold of one again only to find they were going for about £200 on eBay. Jaw hit floor, and I decided against it. It's gonna happen with consoles too, so perhaps now is a good time to buy, but we're not there yet.

(Also a belated) Happy Amiga day!

Just read AlexS's review of the Amiga Visual Compendium: http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/index. ... Itemid=294. All bringing back good memories.

Hey, so I know you were after some articles.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for but I've been working on an Javascript/HTML5 version of Star Castle that I'm planning to release shortly. I would have had it done already but life being what it is, the current gig I'm on has overrun by a couple of months and is getting right in the way. There's a video of an early demo at . (Apologies for the crappy sound quality - couldn't get Soundflower to do proper duplex using the internal soundcard.)

Quite a lot has changed since that came out: scores, lives, level progression, better collision detection, it now works on both iOS and Android with hybrid touch/tilt controls. I'm also about to add game controller support because fundamentally, whilst touch can work really well for some types of games, I don't think it's great for controlling arcade style games. Still, once it's done you should be able to point your desktop/laptop/tablet/mobile browser at the URL and it should just work.

I think the game's probably easier than the original, at least on the lower levels. I wanted something that captured the spirit without being ludicrously hard from the outset, which I think would put a lot of people of... plus I don't have quite the same pressing need to extract as many 10p pieces from as many people as possible in the shortest time possible as a real arcade game.

Similarly I'd like to do versions of some other classics - Defender/Defender 2/Stargate being my immediate preference.

Anyway, point is, happy to write an article about it, if you think it would be interesting.

Cheers,

No way - this is very cool. Doom rocked my world post A-levels back in 1994. I'd dreamed about games like that but never imagined they might exist. My mate Stu and I... well, his dad's £2000 486 PC didn't get used for much else at the time. Money well spent, obviously.

Anyhow...

1. What have been your biggest career highlights and low points? What did you learn from each?

2. If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring game designers and developers today, what would it be?

3. There are a lot of amazing games that are coming out, and have come out in recent years. Equally there are a lot of games that are technically impressive but lack a certain fun factor. What's your take on this, and what do you think makes a game fun?

4. What's your favourite level in the original Doom and why?

5. How did you feel when you were working on the original Doom - did you know/hope/have a sense that it would turn into the kind of cultural phenomenon that it has?

6. How do you feel about that fact that over 20 years later Doom is (and is likely to remain) up there with the seminal video games of all time? (I suppose this is the same as question 5, but did you have any idea of what you were creating?)

7. If you could have one do over, what would it be and why?

8. What's been the most enjoyable period of your career, and why?

9. Who do you look up to in game design? Who and what inspires you?

10. Do you take inspiration from other forms of art. If so what are they and why?

I'll try and think of some others.

Thanks for sorting this out - great choice of interviewee.

Thanks,

Bart

Hi everyone,

Got a fairly keen interest in retro games and found this forum so thought I'd register. Loving the old Amiga workbench theme, btw.
