I was listening to a Podcast today about retro 1st person shooters on PC. Obviously ID Software cropped up.

I was surprised to hear the two presenters pronounce id Software, as in skid, idiot, pyramid etc...
I always though it was ID as in eye-dee.

Am I in the minority here? I'd be interested to hear what others think.

Its a credit to the retro scene. I don't who runs it but kudos to him/her!

I went along with my two brothers. I thought it would be good but it exceeding all my expectations. Its awesome!
We spent about 4hrs in there but could easily lose 8hrs+ without even batting an eyelid.
There must be around 200 machines; far too many to list here, all dedicated cabs.
A few honourable mentions:
Hellfire, R-type, R-type Leo, Galaga, Raiden II, Bomb Jack, Outrun, Star Wars, Final Fight, Tempest, Super Off Road, Donkey Kong, Sega Rally, Point Blank 1 & 2, Mercs, Crazy Taxi, Soul Caliber, the list goes on...........

This was definately a hit with us and we can't wait to go back again.
Thouroughly recommended if you live in the north west.

Hmm, I don't know this one but it looks right up my street! I'll look forward to listening tomorrow. I'll resist the temptation to search the web in the meantime...

I'm trying to think of Cyberpunk games that were released on the Amiga now. The obvious one is Flashback. I believe an adaption of Neuromancer was released for Amiga actually. Never played the game but the book is a classic. Other than those I'm stumped..............until Sunday I guess!

What a great project to work on. Recreating that design in 3D CAD would be ace and dealing with all the manufacturing processes and production engineering, all from scratch.
$30,000 costs with RRP at $60 x 2 per customer would be covered in max 250 transactions. Not inconceivable.

I'd love to join the queue but can't justify ~£90 for two Jag controllers at the moment. Maybe if they go on general sale individually at some point.

Having said that, do I even need one lol! What games use the 6 buttons??

I guess there are two camps when it comes to shooters. This would extend to any genre but I'll stick with shooters as an example.

• Skill and gratification in trying to 1CC or 1LC a game. I'd put games like Hellfire, R-Type, Cybernator, Raiden etc in this bracket. There is a running story and the achievement comes from beating the bosses and advancing stages.
• Skill and gratification in trying to acheive a high score using game mechanics and chain multipliers etc. Stuff like DoDonPachi, GigaWing 2, Psyvariar 2, even Galaga etc fall into this bracket. Not too fussed about how far you get as long as you improve on your last score!

Clearly this can be elaborated on and there's elements of crossover, but you get my point lol.

Yes! Hellfire is one of my all time favourite Mega Drive games. I've managed to reach the second loop but not much more. That was with a lot of attempts and practice though, doubt I could achieve it these days. Its an awesome game.
Gynoug (Wings of Wor) is another brilliant game. Two very good shouts there.

I had a thing for playing more modern bullet hell shooters a few years ago, particularly Giga Wing II on the Dreamcast. Thats a mental game thats hard as nails.
Psyvariar 2 was another one. Great risk and reward mechanic that made you play like a nutter for high scores.

The 4th level of R-Type has been a brick wall for me over the years. Perhaps I'm just crap at it rather than it being too difficult lol.
It has saved me buying the 2nd Hucard for PC Engine though. Maybe its a mental block to save me money.

I've never played this but I've heard of it. Looks a lot like Galaga.
