Retro News & Chat / Epic days of gaming.
March 22, 2013, 18:45:46 PM
Epic days of gaming. I am something of a current gen grump, I do play new games but rarely do I find titles I enjoy as much as older ones. It sometimes feels like the best days of gaming are behind us, I married and older and have much less free time.

So this week we had an epic day of gaming. A friend came over who is something of a retro fan but not quite on the same level as some of us. We got the SNES and the Wii (emulators) out to have a full day of 2 player action and it was superb.

We started on Return of Double Dragon and I told Simon not to be put off by the bad visuals. On running a demo, we made a cuppa and a nice grimace spread across his face, DD was not a pretty game in 1992 let alone now. Anyway he joined in the two player action and after about 15 mins was in love. We played it right the way to the end but died just before the last set of bosses.

Next we moved on to Contra 3. It was insanely hard and we managed to lose all of our lives about 1/3 of the way through level 1. Dropped down to easy and managed to make level 3. Still very good fun!

Next up was Goof Troop. A game that rarely gets mentioned in any forums I post on and something that is superb fun, especially in 2 player. After explaining the game in a less than convincing fashion, we set off. Again after 15 mins or so we were having a blast and managed to play it all the way to completion in around 3 hours.

After that came Turtles IV:Turtles in Time. Instant love with this one. We were already having such a laugh anyway and this game is so fluid and easy to play. We played on standard settings and got all the way to the last boss and got owned. Brilliant stuff.

Inbetween games we popped a few other bits on, Sunset Riders, Wild Guns and a few rom hacks. Also have so much stuff to play through on our next local retro session.

Times like this are far too rare now. If you don't do it, I urge anyone to set up a session with mates.  :1:

Many of us are gamers and we also have collections of sort. In those collections we have absolute favourites and often end up with duplicate items on different formats or regions. Which ones do you have?

For me..

Chrono Trigger (DS,SNES,PS1)
Zelda LttP (SNES, GBA)
Yoshi's Island (GBA,SFC)
Valkyrie Profile (PS1, PSP)
Castlevania SotN (PS1, PSP)
Persona 3 (PS2, PSP)
Stunt Race FX (USA, JP!)
Doom (SNES,PS1)
Zelda Twilight Princess (GC,Wii)
Resident Evil 4 (Wii, PS2)
Resident Evil 2 (GC, PS1)
Resident Evil 3 (GC, PS1)
Final Fantasy 1-2 (PSP, PS1)
Final Fantasy IV (PSP,PS1)
Star Ocean 2 (PSP, PS1)
Tokyo Highway 2 (PS2, DC)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES, PS1)

Looking at this lot I should really get rid of a couple. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI are both better on SNES and DS than PS1 but I have owned the PS1 versions since new and can't bring myself to sell up!

Anyone else?

General Retro Chat / Dreamcast Vs. PlayStation 2
February 10, 2013, 12:33:35 PM
There were millions of crisp and stunning games on PS2, more that ran at 60fps than most other consoles.

When talking about frame rates, the DC is not a console I would mention.

The PS2 did well because it was supported with amazing software. Games like Devil May Cry, Onimusha 1-2, WRC, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Ace Combat 4, The Thing, Gran Turismo 3, Timesplitters 2, Winning Eleven and god knows how many more all feature vibrant visual, distinct lack of jaggies and 60fps.

The machine is not at all widely know for anything. Only the most staunch haters ignore the machines qualities. Play on a properly setup console and it looks and play great. Granted the DC does have a better display image and more friendly anti aliasing support.

And the DC does have the wonderful Sega arcade feel. :D

Nintendo Chat / The Nintendo 64 thread.
January 05, 2013, 23:22:59 PM
A thread for all things Nintendo 64. I no longer own one as I foolishly sold a mint JP machine with 50 games. However I have been playing Wave Race recently via the Wii and it is still fantastic.

What are your favourite games?

Nintendo Chat / The Super Nintendo thread.

As many will know I adore the Super Nintendo ( I also really like the MD!), so I thought it was time to talk games.

I have a pretty decent collection and I still play my machine often. I am currently playing Final Fantasy 3 with the aim to actually finish it this time.

What are you playing? What do you like?
