Marketplace / Universal DC power supply
April 24, 2013, 14:47:04 PM
I've got a UK universal DC power supply that was included with a recent purchase. It's 220V only, so I'll never use it here in the US. Has selector dials for a range of output voltages (3V-12V) and selectable polarity. Five different plug sizes at the end of the cable so it should fit most older consoles. It was included with a PC Engine.

Does anyone want this? I'd send it back to the UK for the price of postage plus a little extra.

Retro News & Chat / Your favorite gaming franchise?
March 23, 2013, 13:53:42 PM
What's your all-time favorite gaming franchise?

Was thinking about this after posting in another thread and figured it might make a decent discussion... or maybe 'out' some Mario fanboys. :21:

Franchise defined as:
- character or series with games across more than one console generation.
- must have some variety in gaming genres/appearances. (making the transition from 2D to 3D is valid)

Mine is Ghosts & Goblins. The core games are amazing, and I enjoyed all of the spin-offs, side games, and Arthur cameos. Maximo, Demon's Crest, Gargoyle Quest, Incredible Toons, MvC3.

Rayman/Rabbids would probably be my second choice. I'm not a big platformer fan, but I've enjoyed most of the Rayman games and the first Rabbids titles were hilarious.

Arcade & Pinball Chat / Latest Arcade Purchases
March 04, 2013, 14:21:49 PM
I've noted a couple retro arcade purchases in the 'Latest Retro Purchases' thread before, but figured a new thread in this subforum would be more appropriate... esp for games that are somewhere between retro and modern.

So... I bought a small lot of three arcade carts:
- KoF XI for the Atomiswave
- Neo Geo Battle Coliseum for the Atomiswave
- DoDonPachi 2: Bee Storm for the IGS PGM

Fight! Fight! Shmup!

After seeing Vyothric's chat box comment about his array of retro consoles, let's see who else still plays on original hardware... What's the oldest retro console that's connected to your TV right now?

I own most of the golden age consoles, but the oldest console that I keep connected is the Sega Genesis. I also use a power base converter to play Master System games and use my Turbo Duo & Duo-R to play TG-16 & PC Engine Hucards but the 1989 Genesis v1 is my oldest console that still gets regular use.

Retro News & Chat / tomwaits - MVS cart collection
August 28, 2012, 14:48:21 PM
I might take more pics of my collection later, but I took this photo recently and figured I'd share. It's my current wall of MVS carts... except that I forgot to remove Kizuna Encounter from my supergun for the photo. (was playing it around the time of the crazy AES auction)

Currently at 50 carts and two multicarts.

(Metal Slug 5 and Money Puzzle Exchanger are bootlegs. The Japanese label is Ragnagard. The rest are all original carts with original US labels.)

Retro News & Chat / Psygnosis is gone. :(
August 23, 2012, 18:15:43 PM
Sony has shut down the development group formerly known as Psygnosis. Their current gen Wipeout games might have been the best in the franchise, so they were still making quality games... :(

Retro News & Chat / Early puzzle platformers?
July 08, 2012, 17:47:30 PM
I've been playing Closure on PS3 and started thinking about how much I enjoy the genre. Recent indie games like Limbo, Braid, And Yet It Moves, Hamilton's Great Adventure, etc. are all really fun. Trial and error platform games with static levels, fixed position enemies, and tricky 'how do I get to the exit?' logic puzzles.

So... where did this genre start? The earliest mainstream puzzle platformer that I could think of was Lemmings. Was there anything earlier?

Introductions / Hi!
February 15, 2012, 18:39:03 PM
Hi!
Another USA member (Boston area)... I joined RVG after getting Laird's invite. Thanks!

I've been obsessively playing/collecting videogames since the mid-70s. Stacks of plastic storage bins everywhere. :)
