Retro News & Chat / Re: Best platformers?
December 22, 2014, 17:27:42 PM
Really grew to dislike platformers after the newer consoles appeared and the only ones I can truly say I loved were on C64 (Turrican, Myth, Cyberdyne Warrior and Creatures) and Master System (Rastan and Wonder Boy).
These new fangled contraptions and their fancy graphics..PAH.

After about 30 hours of Dragon Age Inquisition, I got totally bored so have left that for now and am now playing Mega Turrican and Phantasy Star IV again :)
Stiiiiill plodding through my save of Might and Magic 2: Gates to Another World, 26 years later lol

Wow I remember this set, had it on the C64 and adored it, so many awesome games!

My favourite compilations though were:

This was a compilation of 3 fantastic text adventures by Level 9, namely Lords of Time, Red Moon and Price of Magic all of which were excellent adventures and thoroughly enjoyable.

The absolute best collection I have ever owned though was:

Look at it, Last Ninja 1&3, Myth, Flimbos Quest...once I had this I rarely played anythingelse all year until I had finished those 3 (how the heck did I ever finish Myth!?)

They don't do collections like they used too...hell the Red Faction collection I ordered had no Red Faction :(

Retro News & Chat / Re: Favourite turn based games?

Quote from: "StickHead"Nobody's mentioned Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday on the Megadrive yet, so I thought I'd give it a nod. Great atmosphere, and I loved the fact that you could befriend the alien races if you trod carefully, providing really powerful allies. The further you got in the game, the more you got attached to the characters you created. Great stuff.

Hmmm....I have it and have played it a lot but always do the initial base attack, leave for the spaceport and them stop playing!?
Maybe one day I will have to give it the care and attention it clearly deserves....

Sega Chat / Re: Sega Megadrive Must Have Games

*Sigh* I love my Megadrive  :)

Golden Axe 2: Another game that rarely seems to get much love but I find it's old school bum-chopping great fun :)

Might and Magic: Gate to Another World: A huge, exciting world to explore with a hand-made party of explorers and vast choice of spells, skills and equipment. Damned hard early on but grows into one of the best RPGs I have played.

Phantasy Star 4: And then we have the single greatest RPG on the Megadrive. The first RPG I played in which a primary character dies and it was a massive awakening to me making me realise games are not always cookie cutter stories.

Soliel: As a man who dislikes Zelda games this should have been the bane of my life but heck, I just love Soliel. The mixture of abilities that be garnered by mixing and matching animals make for a very diverse game style and the puzzle solving is excellently conceived.

Star Flight: A massive and exciting space opera with hundreds of worlds to visit, numerous races to learn about and make alliances with and upgrades to ship and crew.

Story of Thor: Another excellent Action RPG with some memorable characters, beautiful graphics and brilliant puzzles to be solved with the aid of the spirits.

Streets of Rage 2: Although it nearly cost me my marriage (coop with your wife is not good if you keep killing her accidentally..) this is the definitive Bean Em Up of the 4th gen Consoles.

Turrican: As with mega Turrican, not the best version but a must have for any shooter fanatic!

Wiz n liz: Another game Mr and Mrs Tachi played together but this one we love. Excellent fun, brilliant soundtrack and just the right level of difficulty to keep you coming back for more!

So yeah, Megadrive absolutely rocks!

Well apart from the obvious Suikoden, Phantasy Star 4 and Might and Magic: Gates to Another World I do love Lords of Chaos, Master of Magic and Bards Tale and Johnny Rebb 2 on C64.

New York City on the Atari 800xl is the first I can think of.
Then Turrrican 1/2 on C64, Shogo Mobile Armour Division & Blood 2 on DOS, Hexen on PS1 and Bards Tale on the Atari 800xl.

All these bring back happy memories of sitting with my old friends and playing games for hours on end :)

Hmmm....I chose No but in retrospect should have chosen Depends on the Game I think.
I was bitter due to my experience with the Hitman HD Collection (which sucks donkey dick) but I realise now we are talking about games being remade and not just given a spray of polish.

So yeah, depends on the game. I would gladly pay full price for an up-to-date remake of any of these...
Arx Fatalis
AVP
Drakan
Shogo
Syndicate (and the remake by Starbreeze can just crawl off and die).
System Shock 2

I think that too many reimaginings (like the aforementioned Syndicate, PSPs Alien Syndrome, Bionic Commando, Perfect Dark on the 360, the vomit-inspiring Front Mission Evolved and  Conkers Bad Fur Day in which all the profanity was removed!!) are being made and frankly they do not work.

I too had the C64 version and it still looks good today but yeah, CPC does win hands down.
Is it me though but is the Atari XL really damned fast?

Retro News & Chat / Re: Hardest games you've played

Only 2 game have really been unbeatable for me.
One is Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox 360 and the other Syndicate Wars on the PS1...that last level

Not really...
I've always loved RPGs and they are still my favourite genre today and equally have always been a sucker for a good mech game and even today anything with Mech or Robots (Vanquish, Crysis, Armored Core) still sucks me in.
I did used to adore a good platformer, such as Impossible Mission or House of Usher but as none of these sorts of games are really made anymore I don't really have an opportunity to play them..

For me the only games I really play these days are:
Ghostbusters
Rastan
Heroes of the Lance
Ultima 4
Gauntlet

Not a lot else really speaks to me anymore :)

Currently setup on my CRT is a MD, PS1, PS2, Xbox, Saturn and 2600 so the oldest for me would be the Atari I guess.

Sony Chat / Re: Sony PlayStation 1 - Must Have Games
February 09, 2013, 18:55:47 PM
For me, many of the games that always appear on lists (FFVII, MGS etc) have lost their lustre for me over the years, what with my rediscovery of better games from even older systems. Now I have a much more mixed list with some more unusual games.
Adventures of Alundra
Bloody Roar 2
Brahma Force
Descent 2
Diablo
Future Cop L.A.P.D
Front Mission 3
Gauntlet Legends (is this what you meant by Gauntlet Legions or have I missed out on a Gauntlet Game??)
Hexen
Machine Hunter
Rival Schools
Sentient
Sentinel Returns
Suikoden
Tenchu
The Hunter
Unholy War
Vandal Hearts
