Hmmm I read this thread yesterday.  I've read today's comments..... [edit: and Grey and SnakeEyes stop posting a minute!!  I'm typing and watching the Commonwealth Games programme on the beeb and I can't keep up! Now I have to edit....... ....]

I wasn't going to comment for any reason other than that I don't like farewell threads.  Whether it's an official announcement or a self indulgent, self scripted 'ta tar', I think they're unnecessary.   

But I'm here now so first I'll say, au revoir! 

Now, what's this about pulling reviews he wrote?  Surely some mistake?  I really don't think Kieren would want this community to be damaged in anyway regardless of differences or whatever the issues may be.  I think he's a better man than that.  Better these are left alone for the benefit of the RVG community.  Ok, so I'm wrong -  I gave him the benefit of the doubt too.  What a selfish act to leave on.

Looking forward, someone will step up to fill his place and as the old formula goes when someone leaves something - you're celebrated if you were any good, then blamed for everything, then forgotten.  C'est la vie.

And on the plus side it means less Atari bias and talk.  Yay!  Can I suggest the job spec includes that any candidate "Must be a Commodore fanboy" and has "Nintendo fan" in the desirable criteria.

Some of the Infocom adventures had great stories.  Same with Level 9; Silicon Dreams trilogy was pretty darned cool! 

Point n click tended to have decent story driven gameplay....  Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Blade Runner(maybe), Grim Fandango, Monkey Island....

No doubt I will be forgetting numerous games I'm very fond of and even if I haven't, next week I could give a different 10!

A few c64 games I really like.  They're games that aren't amazing but I love the setting and characters enough that an average game became superb fun.

Big Fat Hairy Deal on the C64 was pretty good fun.  I loved the large sprites, animation and they way the game captured the strip so well.



Strontium Dog, a BASIC game, that has something of a Minter quality to it making it very engaging to play.



Another 2000AD game, Nemesis the Warlock.  I loved this as a kid as I thought Nemesis was soooo cool.  I've played it recently on CCS64 and I still got a kick out of playing it   Credo!

Rogue Trooper: Quartz Zone Massacre.  A PS2 release originally, I'm not sure how different, if at all, the Wii version is but it's a pretty decent 3rd person game.

I have to go for DOOM despite it being an obvious choice.  I thought about Goldeneye but although I played it so much I could breeze through all the levels on 007 difficulty and knew all the levels as well as I know my house I don't have a desire to go back and play it again.  That's not the case with DOOM and DOOM 2.  I still get a kick out of playing these games.

I never understood the whole laziness = slow code argument.  Wouldn't slow code take up more lines of code than fast code, therefore making it actually take longer to write slow code?

Lazy coding slow down is a huge factor in conversions where source code isn't optimised for the hardware.

Some thoughts....

Are we really going to call GTA V 'retro' in an arbitrary number of years?  How about Super Mario 3D World or Rain? I'm not sure.  These will all certainly go down as classics though.

The leaps forward between generations has been getting smaller and smaller.  In terms of considering what hardware is 'retro' and when, then this gap should be ever widening.
