I am interested in writing reviews although I should stress that my experience is limited to all things Sinclair. I once wrote a retrospective on Manic Miner (titled rather pompously "Manic Miner - Memory's Diffusion of Facts) which ran to about 4 pages of A4.

If you want I could knock up a review of a game and send it to you...

That would be excellent! We do need some computer related ones.

Would be really good if you could knock up a bunch of mini-reviews much like the ones that are there now!

Awesome thats all we need fella.. People from all walks of the Retro Gaming Spectrum (pardon the pun) are needed to write some reviews.

What they will need to do is follow the exsisting mini reviews (like The Laird Said)or be one off Feature Reviews.

I'm Pretty sure I could knock up the odd review or two, I have already done a couple for the Retro Gamer Retrobate review section, So can poach those two for a start. For a taster, If you go onto the Main RG website (not the forum) and look for tribal2873 you should be able to find my reviews on Doriath for the C64 and The Haunting for Megadrive.

If you can do them to the same format the mini-reviews that I have up right now and then email them to me!

Heya I spoke to Jamie on Twitter and I am quite interested in trying to help with reviews. The consoles I would prefer to do is NES, SNES, Master System and Mega Drive. I haven't done reviews before but it was something I wanted to get started in anyway :)

Hope I can help

Nice one! I am the guy in charge of the reviews here, until the Vectrex reviews were added recently I was the only person who had written any.

First thing you need to do is go and read a bunch of the reviews already up there and look at the format of them because we want them all to follow that style. So fairly short mini reviews with a score out of 10 and a screenshot.

Then pick a system, NES or SNES would be awesome as nobody is covering any Nintendo machines but SMS would be great to. I have started work on some Megadrive ones myself so if you did these we would have to make sure we don't clash. Do about 10 reviews and send them to me via email as a word document and I will let you know what I think and do any editing where needed!

Look forward to seeing something from you!

This may sound like an odd question but I have a team of my own for my Retro Let's Plays. Would it be ok if we did the reviews as a team? Basically there are 3 of us, me (retz), Wolfie and Samchu. Wolfie hold's a lot more expertise in the Nintendo consoles than I do and Samchu has her own expertise on each of the consoles.
We would do the reviews in the same style as yours its just, I would do a few, Wolfie would do a few and Samchu would do a few. If thats ok.

The Laird will happily take the reviews and so on and post them on the site for you. 8)

who me? I dont mind creating footage and sending it to you guys to add to your channel under your RVG channel banner if you want... or else how else would it work? If I did that though I'd either just want some kind of mention or maybe the option to also show the vids on my channel as well? I don't mind how we do it though

Well, we are looking for people with P.H.D in computer science, HTML/java script and ruby experience , and the abilitity to have 2 walnuts in your mouth and still be able to speak after 3 tequila shots, this is mandatory !

Also if available To be able to multi-task under at least 3 operations at the same time, answering phones, looking out a window and doodling on a note pad.

If you can not achieve or qualify for any of the above, we will except at least one from the multi-tasking suggestions we've outlined.

Thank you for your application and I am sure one of the bots here will get back to you very soon :113:

No PHD im afraid - all self taught skillz. Dont do walnuts either - but I can still speak after 3 long island iced teas. Know a bit of html - never looked at ruby tho. Python will have to do :) I have 8 cores with which to multi task and rant at 50 paces

Do you know enough HTML to help us fix how the reviews page works?  It would be great if the link to any given review went directly to the review the person uses vs what currently happens which is simply that you end up in the page where the review appears.
Title: Re: You fancy helping?
Post by: HomerRamone2084 on October 31, 2013, 19:44:55 PM
Probably not - but I might be able to figure it out.
Im a dab hand at a number of other languages though- probably not much use here.
I can do a spot of adobe stuff - not drawing stuff but I graft a mean head onto a body :)
Title: Re: You fancy helping?

Trek: use the anchor id tags.

Here is a really easy example from memory. Copy and paste the code below into notepad and save it as whatever.html and then view it in your prefered browser.

Example Code:

<html>
<head>
<title>
I am a page
</title>
</head>
<body>
<a id="spoon">
Spoon! Yey</a>
<p>
<a href ="#dog">click here for dogs </a>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>.<p>
<a id="dog">
I am a dog! Yey
</a>
<p>
<a href="#spoon">click here for spoons </a>
</body>
</html>

Basically by putting <a id="whatever"> Game Title </a> you can then modify the link to the page by adding #whatever at the end of the url to auto scroll to that tag.

example:

Take the Spectrum review of Uridium

Modify the title  Uridium – By Hewson to <a id="Uridium> Uridium - By Hewson</a>

and instead of visiting this link

http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/index.php?page=spectrumvwxyz (//http)

visit this link:

http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/index.php?page=spectrumvwxyz#Uridium (//http)

This is how it works for html files. in fact if you look at some urls when navigating this site you will see it say something like #msg56373, this is because its tagging the messages automatically and this number tells it where to scroll the page to (normally the top but if you visit someones profile and view one of there posts in the original thread, it automatically center the page on their post using this method)

If you have problems  I would need to be able to look at the code you have in place but i suspect this will just work!

Take the Spectrum review of Uridium

Modify the title  Uridium – By Hewson to <a id="Uridium> Uridium - By Hewson</a>

and instead of visiting this link

http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/index.php?page=spectrumvwxyz (//http)

visit this link:

http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/index.php?page=spectrumvwxyz#Uridium (//http)

This is how it works for html files. in fact if you look at some urls when navigating this site you will see it say something like #msg56373, this is because its tagging the messages automatically and this number tells it where to go!

If you have problems  I would need to be able to look at the code you have in place but i suspect this will just work!

Cool!  I'll see if I can do this.  Thanks!

Fin is correct.  That's your solution right there.

The tabs also need attention but I mentioned that before in feedback.

I think he's talking about the tabs at the top. If you click on Home, Forum, Store Directory or Calendar the tab changes from red to grey to show where you are. When you click on any other tab either Home or Forum turns to grey and not the tab you clicked on.

Quote from: &quot;TrekMD&quot;Do you know enough HTML to help us fix how the reviews page works?  It would be great if the link to any given review went directly to the review the person uses vs what currently happens which is simply that you end up in the page where the review appears.

Some of them do, but I didn't originally know how to do this so only the ones Zapiy put up linked. It's more work to do it this way and I have just never got round to setting them all up properly, it's a lot of time and effort for not much difference.

So did you guys sort out that HTML problem? I only ask because on my forum I had a problem with the code jumping to another browser tab till our co-admin showed me how to use 'self' tags. I can get the code from that site if it helps but it looks like Fin and Mire etc know HTML coding far better than I do.

In any event, if I can help in any way, I will happily try.

The anchors was what i used to use, i am not sure how we are going forward with the reviews longterm at the moment so we will have to get back to you on that..

As for the tabs, yes i did fix them but they are borked again.. However i will try and resolve a perm fix..

I am happy to help though I am not sure how. I have long spells when I hardly get on the site so moderating is probably not a good choice for me, especially as so many of you know far more than I do about the retro game scene. However, anything else I will happily help.

ps I haven't forgotten our convo, just completed this damn degree but now have european guests coming over. That said, I will be checking in more often now :)

On the matter of reviews, do you guys have a standard format and what do you need reviews of?

My passion is the Jaguar but I feel that has largely been covered by experts like Gone :39: I am trying to put together some personal experiences for the Jag but that is a little way off yet.

Sure, please do and I have experience of a great many 2600 titles and a fair amount of XL/XE (had my own market stall for several years). I'll happily have a go, especially on the Jag stuff as I think a slightly different approach my be possible.

Cool, I will send you more details once I make it back home (I'm returning from CGE).  Glad to see you can write reviews for the XL/XE as well.  Check out our current 2600 section also so you can put together a list of games that you'd like to review that are not already there.  :)

I run a YouTube channel which I upload to weekly or try to at least and if you want I can advertise the website on there a little bit if you want. I already advertise VGCollect.com (un-officially of course) as I use it for an online database but I'd be happy to mention RVG in a few of my vids. Let me know what you think :)

Hey Gazzaper!  Thanks for offering to help with reviews.  Please, check our Style Guide (//http) for the details on how to write the reviews.

Insofar as systems, Sinclair, C64, Amiga and GameBoy would be great as we already have pages for all of those and we'd be adding your stuff.  Please, check the existing reviews so you don't end up writing a duplicate.  We'd need to create a new section for the PS2 so we'd need something like 30 reviews to get it started so we have enough for each letter group.  If you're interested, that's cool.  :)

For Star Wars, feel free to write what you'd like and just let me know what you're working on.  I'm going to PM you something related to this as well as where to send them.

Thanks again!

Hey, so I know you were after some articles.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for but I've been working on an Javascript/HTML5 version of Star Castle that I'm planning to release shortly. I would have had it done already but life being what it is, the current gig I'm on has overrun by a couple of months and is getting right in the way. There's a video of an early demo at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV87AKRP6xI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV87AKRP6xI). (Apologies for the crappy sound quality - couldn't get Soundflower to do proper duplex using the internal soundcard.)

Quite a lot has changed since that came out: scores, lives, level progression, better collision detection, it now works on both iOS and Android with hybrid touch/tilt controls. I'm also about to add game controller support because fundamentally, whilst touch can work really well for some types of games, I don't think it's great for controlling arcade style games. Still, once it's done you should be able to point your desktop/laptop/tablet/mobile browser at the URL and it should just work.

I think the game's probably easier than the original, at least on the lower levels. I wanted something that captured the spirit without being ludicrously hard from the outset, which I think would put a lot of people of... plus I don't have quite the same pressing need to extract as many 10p pieces from as many people as possible in the shortest time possible as a real arcade game.

Similarly I'd like to do versions of some other classics - Defender/Defender 2/Stargate being my immediate preference.

Anyway, point is, happy to write an article about it, if you think it would be interesting.

Cheers,

Bart
