It's a chat system. It was primarily for gamers but the use-base has expanded.

Update: Well, I guess things are changing with Discord: Discord is rebranding to shift away from gaming (https://www.engadget.com/discord-rebranding-151953314.html?utm_campaign=homepage&utm_medium=internal&utm_source=dl)

Okay, I signed up for Discord. When I click the link above though it says that the invite has expired. Can't find any way around it???
