Title: Alien vs Predator - Does the Jaguar version still hold up?
Post by: onthinice on August 15, 2012, 17:12:05 PM
I only have the Super Nes version of Alien vs Predator. Seeing that unreleased Lynx video made me think of the Jaguar version.

I rented a Jaguar in the 90's and played AvP. I thought the game was amazing then and was wondering if it still held up today? Is the game worth it to track down not just to own but to play?

I am not of the opinion that some people seem to have that AVP is the best game on the Jag or the only game worth playing on the system (granted these are usually people who have barely even touched a Jag if at all)

But it is still a very good game that has plenty of gameplay in it thanks to the 3 different modes and is one of the few games out there that can still make me jump. It is very atmospheric and much more than just an FPS.

You can read my review of the game HERE! (//http)

Definitely a game worth getting for the Jaguar.  Laird's review confirms that.  :)

Thanks The Laird! Should have checked you reviews first.

Thanks TrekMD!

Zoop is probably my favorite Jag game but then I like thinking games. Wolfenstein, Tempest and Iron Soldier also get some playing time.  The price has always turned me away from purchasing a copy. Since I only rented it for a few days all those many years ago it made sense to ask before buying.

Thanks again!

Great thing is that Jaguar stuff is increasing in price all the time so even if you buy a loose one you will at least make your money back on it if you decide you don't want it!

It's worth owning for sure as it's a great game however the prices it goes for on ebay are ridiculous!  If you're okay with cart only the Goat store has them for $35.00 which is probably the best price you will find.

Thanks The Laird and Shadowrunner.

Is there one reason why the Jaguar in general is seeing an increase in prices? Wonder if I need to hurry and buy now?

Because they are genuinely rare, especially when idiots keep blowing them up by using the wrong power supplies on them!

Also people are starting to realise they are not as shit as some people like to make out and of course there is the vibrant homebrew scene too.

My Jag senses are peaked! I hadn't heard about the power supplies?

The Jaguar uses reverse polarity and nearly all other consoles use positive. There is no protection on the board either like most consoles, for some stupid reason, and this means that if you use the wrong power supply it fries the motherboard. It can be fixed by replacing some of the chips but you first have to be very skilled at soldering and secondly be able to find the parts!!!

I did not know. Thanks!
Is the Jaguar RF output the same as other consoles? Would one off a Genesis work to output to the tv? Are the Jaguar console and CD power supplies the same?

The Jaguar RF is standard, same as other consoles but looks horrible. If you are in the US you will want composite / S-Video cables. In the UK and Europe we use Scart leads, the difference is unbelievable.

The Jaguar and Jag CD use the exact same PSU.

Thanks!
Bought my Jaguar off ebay years ago. Did not have a lot of time to play but hooked it up and it worked. So I gave positive feedback. Later I tried it out and good picture but no sound. They sent an old computer cable with the RF adaptor. I did finally track down a composite cable and the picture was better and had sound. It does look better.

Just curious since my Jaguar and Genesis PSU look the same. Did not want to lose the Jag to me making a mistake with the power supply.

When I bought my Atari 5200 the guy(local) gave me a new power supply with it. Turned out he switched with an Atari 400/800 thinking I would not notice. Took it home the light flickered real quick then nothing. Noticed the PSU did not match the box so I tried a couple of Atari 400 PSU's and the same thing. Thankfully he made it right.

The Jag is a great system and has a pretty good games library one you get past all the usual dross like Bubsy, Club Drive, Crescent Galaxy, Checkered Flag and Kasumi Ninja (although I like that just for the comedy value!).

The later games really begin to show what the system was capable of, such a shame that most people seem to be totally unaware of games like Protector: SE, Super Burnout, Iron Soldier 2, Battle Morph and Missile Command 3D.

One big downfall is that the Jaguar is pricey to collect for and the, in my opinion essential, Jaguar CD can be quite expensive. Good thing is though that when you have the Jag CD there is plenty of stuff you can burn yourself for free and the games are generally very cheap.

Agree with this totally.  I got a Jaguar only a couple of years ago and it has been pricey to get that collection indeed!  As Laird says, though, there are cheaper games on CD and even many that are free that you can burn yourself.

While I agree with most of your bad games list I gotta say I really like Club Drive.
Yeah it looks like ass but its still fun to play.

I'm probably late chiming in here but I'd definitely say that yes it still holds up... especially considering I've only had the game for 2 years or so, I didn't know about it back then and for me to get it so recently and think its an excellent game speaks volumes I think.

I love the atmosphere and authenticity, I just wish there was more of a story, cut scenes and dialogue etc. maybe you could've saved fellow marines and chosen different characters etc... but those are minor quibbles and in general I love AVP :)

Thank you all for taking the time to respond!

I have spent the last few years trying to collect for too many systems. That has left me really drained in more ways then just money and more then a few times I have wanted to just sell most of my systems. So my new approach is to try and start enjoying this wonderful hobby. AvP I think will be a good start.

Thanks!

Best way to be mate! At one stage I was buying more games than I had time to play!

These days I don't buy many games but when I do its because I really want it!!!  8)
