The N64 really was a beast of a machine.

It really was.  When I look at the games compared it is remarkable how well the N64 games look compared to the GameCube versions.

When games were designed to play to its strengths it was a mighty console. It didn't suit many game styles that were prevalent at the time. The cartridge format wasn't suitable for Final Fantasy for example, and the graphical effects built in to make up for certain shortcomings in texture sizes were overused. The game library was small too and the controller attracted a lot of criticism , but it brought analogue control to the mainstream (both PS and Saturn had 2D pads at launch), rumble, 4 player ports and some interesting ideas using the Gameboy with Pokemon Stadium, and it hosted a significant number of superb games among the best of that generation.
