Title: US Only Genesis games?
Post by: dcultrapro on August 07, 2012, 13:04:37 PM
Hey gang,

So I recently realised that virtually any US Genesis cart will work on PAL Mega Drives and wondered if there are any stand out titles that came out in the US that didn't reach UK shores??

I did a google but came up empty, Google seemed to only return results like "Used Genesis Games" or "USA Genesis" etc but no lists of USA ONLY titles for MD/Genesis

be interested to hear, and if its been posted before I apologise but I couldn't find the right search term to find a thread about it

Most do but not all, some of the later games have region lock-out in them. I found this out when I bought a cheap Streets Of Rage 3 from the US. I also have a Shanghai II that I can't play because of lock-out :(

Of course you can use Jap games too if you have an Action Replay, Game Genie or converter.

That said I have a stack of great Genesis games that do work on a PAL console, I would recommend the following:

Mystical Fighter
Air Buster
Growl
Whip Rush
Twin Cobra
Fire Shark
Granada
Saint Sword
Devilish
Bimini Run
Splatterhouse 3
Rolling Thunder 3

I particularly recommend Granada, it's one of the best shooters on the console in my opinion and features some amazing scaling and rotation techniques (that people thought were impossible on the MD)

ok cool thanks for the the list bud, though you mention the Japan games might be a solution but I was under the impression that the NTSC-J carts were actually a different shape... what kind of converter/action replay could/should I look at?

Like I said, the easiest solution is to just get an Action Replay or Game Genie, they can be had for a few quid.

I prefer to buy US games over Jap ones as they are in English.

exactly my predicament, I like imports but if I can't read it or understand the dialogue I don't enjoy the game as much. So... Granada huh? I'll have a look into that one, what are the others like from your experience?

any good RPG's or platformers?

Most of those games I listed are shoot 'em ups and scrolling beat 'em ups and are all good.

No idea about any of those though as I hate RPG's and platformers.

You HATE platformers?? wow, so you don't like Sonic or anything like that? ok well I will look out for any replies from other gamers on here as I'm quite happy with platformers... Pulseman and Vectorman interest me but I've got them on emulator at the moment so unless I see carts at reasonable prices I won't be buying them lol... not that I don't appreciate what you've already posted mind you, I just wanna hear about some other types of game as well

is there an actual full list of US only games anywhere or is it fairly vague?

Sonic games are ok, better than most but you won't see me playing them.

Vectorman is available in PAL I am sure, dunno about the other one.

no worries, I think I may have found the list though I'm not sure if posting it here will work, so I will attach it to the thread, I'm hoping its right, I've lifted it from Wiki list of all Genesis games... I sorted by region and removed all Japan and EU releases so HOPEFULLY what's left is the US only games

Bare in mind they are just US ONLY games not a list of games that didn't get PAL releases.

I have updated that post and posted it as an attachment, it should include anything released in the US, which is what I'm looking for, it mentions other regions as well, so its basically a list of games that didn't release in JAP or EU... I think

EDIT!!

QUICK QUESTION, Ok so I've just seen a reasonably priced Game Genie GOLD (??) cartridge for under a tenner, is that the right thing to do it or is the Gold a give away that its perhaps not the right one? Sorry I don't know about AR's or GG's for Genesis, thanks

reason I'm interested is I want to get Gargoyles for the Mega Drive and apparently its region locked

I have never used a Sega Game Genie only a Snes one  but I would think all you would need is a
master code that bypasses the checksum routine.

I have Gargoyles for the Genesis and think it is a very good game.  Hope you can get it to work.

ok I might pick this item up then, its only a tenner and is in stock oddly enough lol

so I hear Gargoyles is a tough ass game... that true?

EDIT:

OK so I ordered this:

http://www.ecrater.co.uk/p/10479863/gam ... rare?gps=1 (http://www.ecrater.co.uk/p/10479863/game-genie-sega-genesis-rare?gps=1)

any ideas? It should be ok right? Do I still need a code for it to unlock regions or can it just plug and play much like the DC Xploder disc that removes region coding by default?

I'm a bit farked off as they charged me £10 postage even though I'm in the UK as well.... how rude? lol

also is there any way you can get the Mega Drive to run at 60hz without doing a physical mod?

You need a code to play region locked games, there are some online although I never managed to find one for my Shanghai II game  :'(

There is no way unless you mod the console, I really don't think it makes much difference anyway. This 60hz thing is really over rated IMO.

I'll try this again. I tried quoting but it didn't really work so the part about Gargoyles being hard....

I finished the game years ago when it first came out and don't remember it being too hard. Mind you I had a lot more patience for those type of games back then.
If I tried finishing it today I would probably lose it! lol

For me Gargoyles is a challenge. I'm like Shadowrunner the patience just isn't there anymore. All that aside the
game plays really well and gives a very good choice of moves. Just wish you could fly more.

Game Genie looks nice dcultrapro! That is rude on the shipping!Â
