Title: TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine Mini Announced
Post by: Shadowrunner on June 12, 2019, 19:15:45 PM
Very cool surprise announcement out of E3 this year! Konami, who I didn't even realize owned the rights to NEC, is giving us another mini console.

Not a lot of info yet but very exciting news.

Cool, I hadn't seen the list yet. A few poor choices but overall pretty good. Nice that the Japanese games are included too but Snatcher, like he mentioned, and a couple others won't be playable because of the language.

Looks like it may be about $100 also.  Not the cheapest system from all these "mini" systems that are being released but looks like it may be worthwhile.

Looks like an interesting list of games.  I never owned a TG-16 so I may get this.

I've played a clutch of PCE games released on the Wii VC and the better ones really are very good. This would have been an amazing console to own when it was contemporary.

I see some of the ones I played are on this so if the quality of those is representative then it's worth a pick up.

I really like the games, but the design of the console, don’t know, perhaps it’s only me, but in my opinion it’s, well, not ugly but far away from nice.

I've already preordered it!  There are quite a few games I want to try out since I never owned the system.  I'm looking forward to playing Galaga '90 at home!

Looks like we have another victim of the coronavirus, Konami has delayed the launch. They didn't even give a new date. :(

That sucks but it is not in their control.  The virus is affecting lots of tech companies.

Well, I've really enjoyed this Mini system.  Now, I have no frame of reference since I never owned a TG-16 but this mini console is really cool!  The games are organized into the TG-16 system and the PC Engine system, so you have to choose which system games you're going to look at on the menu.  There are several settings you can change and I like that the games are played in their original ratio with the space around filled with different wallpaper.  The system has lots of shooters (which is fine by me) but there is a mix of different types of games.  I haven't tried all of them yet.

The unit itself is lightweight and has a cool design as it looks pretty much like the original TG-16.  One thing that is tricky is taking the back cover off so you can insert all the cables. There are no instructions on how to do it in the manual.  I found a short video on YouTube that explains it and it is quite easy once you know how to do it.

https://youtu.be/0IQt3eT8Xa4

My only complaint is that it does not come with a power supply and it does require a 5V/2amp unit.  I have lots of power supplies at home from cell phones but only one had the required amperage.  So, I've placed an order for the OEM power supply on Amazon as I need the one charger for the phones.

Nifty system.  I have no issue recommending it.  :)

Just watched this video review.  I think this is a particularly good one because Shmup Junkie even compares the Mini with the real thing. Enjoy!

Here is a video looking at the 8-BitDo wireless controllers for the mini.  I ordered the PC Engine design as I like that one that most.
