Title: Atari ‘Retro’ Handheld
Post by: TrekMD on September 04, 2017, 17:15:41 PM
A new 2600-based handheld is coming later this year and it is called the Atari ‘Retro’ Handheld.  The system retains the console’s iconic "wood" effect, and comes packed with 50 classic games.

“We are delighted to be working with Atari on this amazing project,” said David Pain of PQube, who is developing the officially licensed machine, as well as the Atari ‘Retro’ Plug and Play TV Joystick. “Having sold over a million retro gaming consoles, we have taken the extensive feedback from press, retail and the consumer to develop new range of hardware that is faithful to the Atari brand.”

“We are thrilled to partner with PQube on the compact handheld and Plug and Play TV Joystick,” added Fred Chresnais, Chief Executive Officer, Atari. “Both products are packed with nostalgic and fun-filled games that will give our fans the opportunity to relive the golden age of videogames wherever they go.”

At least compared to the Megadrive ones it wont matter about the sound being crap! Shame there's no Activision games, but at least the price is decent.

Looks OK but WHY do these people insist on including paddle-control games???

That is a good question.  It's almost as if they don't know that those games are not meant to be played with a paddle.

A small rotating disc around the base of the thumbstick would be nice.
Not perfect but usable at least.

It would be something!  Better than just having the joypad to try to work with a paddle game.

Well I got this today on email...

QuoteHi, Eugenio!

We are contacting you regarding your Atari ‘Retro’ console order.

We have just received an official statement from the manufacturer regarding production:

“We received the latest samples from the manufacturer at the back end of last week and they were much better than the previous set of samples we saw before Christmas - a lot of progress has been made.

Despite this positive progress, the product is still not 'final' and we have requested some additional amends, to ensure we preserve the expected quality and performance associated with an Officially Licensed Atari product.

Whilst I understand this is disappointing for everyone concerned we believe that it is the right thing to delay rather than rush product to market.  We are now looking to launch on the 18th of May for the TV Joystick product and the 15th June for the Handheld product.

We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.”

Nice to see they actually care about the quality. Delays are unfortunate but in this case it looks like it's a good thing.

Yes, I rather wait for a good product than one that is rushed to meet a deadline but has issues.

Well, this has more delays.  The reason still has to do with quality:

QuoteWe are contacting you to update you on your Atari “Retro” product order and to share an update from the manufacturer;

“As you are aware from previous updates, we have not yet been able to fulfil orders on this product. This is because we’ve been striving to ensure it will have the quality and performance associated with an Officially Licensed Atari product.

It is with this in mind that we have made the difficult decision to move the manufacturing to a new facility. This is not a decision we have taken lightly, especially at this stage of the process. However we have been energised by our discussions with our new manufacturing partners, who understand our ambition to deliver a great retro product â€" one worthy of the Atari brand and the games it will run. We’re more confident than ever on delivering on this.

Given the above, we are now expecting an August release date for both the Atari TV Joystick & Handheld.

We apologise to all those who have already waited patiently to receive their product, as well as our retail partners.”

We appreciate this is very disappointing. Our bonus offer of the additional incentive with your pre-order â€" an exclusive set of Atari Postcards (on top of the Atari Centipede Coin) still stands. All orders will automatically include both these items.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and hope that the exciting product and exclusive pre-order items will be worth the wait.

You are of course still entitled to a full refund if you would prefer.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
The Funstock Team.
