Title: Sturmwind - Sega Dreamcast Homebrew!
Post by: TL on June 04, 2012, 18:39:55 PM
(http://www.segabits.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Sturmwind-2-600x441.png)

Sturmwind is a shmup in the tradition of old arcade games. If it moves - shoot it. The game tries to take advantage of every bit of the Dreamcast hardware and supports a wide range of effects. It also uses the SD Card for various features - if you have one.

You can play the normal mode with all 16 levels or the arcade mode with only 6 levels and no continues. In normal mode your progress will be saved with every finished level.

The game is designed for all Dreamcast fans, it is no hardcore maniac or score shooter. Even average players are able to see more than the first level. There is a good bit of memorization involved as with most of this type of games but that is part of the fun.

I received this response from Duranik today finally after pestering them and Redspot games... and only after I made mention of the fact that if they don't start shipping it soon people will start to ask for their money back

-------------------------------------------------

Hi,

Sorry for the constant delays of the game. The problem are still the Boxes of the LE Version, there was an production error with the first run. As these are produced in China communication is a major issue. Last we heard from RSG is that they have now a new production slot.
Unfortunately we can not give a release date, but i would expect it not before the next 6-8 weeks.

Best regards,

Johannes / Duranik

-------------------------------------------------

now I'm happy I've got a response but I'm surprised that, after 6 months they are STILL using the packaging problem as an excuse, this was the reason it was delayed in December/January... I'm starting to grow concerned

Must be hard in this industry, i am sure it will turn out ok bud. ;)

yeah it just seems to me that Duranik have been screwed by RSG, they obviously have an agreement for RSG to distribute the game but they aren't fulfilling that deal/agreement and its taking forever... at this rate I will probably have Gunlord before Sturmwind!!

oh, and not sure if it matters but technically Sturmwind isn't a homebrew project... though I'm not sure what it would be classed as

Yeah your right, Super Fighter Team said to the same to me.. they certainly see themselves are professional software houses and not homebrew.
Title: Re: Sturmwind - Sega Dreamcast Homebrew!
Post by: dcultrapro on June 22, 2012, 13:19:21 PM
well yeah but Super Fighter published Zaku themselves didn't they? Where as Duranik are the developer and they have a seperate publisher in RSG, however shit they are lol. anyway I'm not bothered either way, I suppose technically it would be deemed as homebrew in a sense that its not recognised by Sega
Title: Re: Sturmwind - Sega Dreamcast Homebrew!
Post by: TL on June 22, 2012, 13:40:28 PM
I merged this into the Sturmwind topic so it made more sense  ;)

I have seen many people say that a project is too professional to be homebrew and almost see it as a slight, Battle Sphere and Gorf on the Jaguar are other good examples.

The thing is though that homebrew is recognised as an unlicensed game for platform no longer supported by its manufacturer that is made in small numbers and produced by hobby coders. That is exactly what Sturmwind is and Zaku was and Gorf . . . . . .

The term homebrew really shouldn't be seen as a slight, it's companies like these that have raised the bar and pushed up the standard of homebrew in such away that we now feel comfortable calling some homebrew games bad. I can remember when people pored over any new homebrew release and praised it to the hilt no matter how bad the game was just because it was a new game for their console, those days are thankfully gone.

Interview with Roland from Duranik

(Originally appeared on the French site Gameplay and translated for RVG)

Hello! Thank you for having agreed to answer our questions.

1. Sturmwind is an all new independent shoot-em up released exclusively on Dreamcast, a machine considered dead for years. What motivated this decision? Why this machine in particular?

The fact is, it is really fun to program on these machines. We have always loved consoles, and have spent many hours on the Mega Drive, the Snes, the Lynx and the Jaguar. At some point, we thought about a new project, and in reality contemplated developing for the Sega system. But that seemed to be too complicated to release something in the form of a cartridge.

2. A demo version of Sturmwind was unveiled a few weeks ago. It seems clear that Sturmwind shared many characteristics with the game Axelay (including weapons and some enemies). What is your favourite game type? Where did you draw the inspiration to design your title?

As you can see, one of the weapons of our game is directly inspired by Axelay. But we we are also inspired by other games such as Blood Money, Wings of Death and R-Type: i.e. games that could be regarded as "European shooters". We are clearly not fans of manic shooters, we are perhaps too old for it;)

3. The official name of your team is Duranik. How many people make up teh team? What is your roles in particular (music, design etc.)?

Duranik is composed of two people. One deals with the programming, graphics and level design. With regards to the music, we have worked with two artists; one did in-game music and the other intro and menu music.

4. The creation of video games is usually a full time job, do you also work alongside? Has Sturmwind been done during your free time?

We have both have full-time jobs and Sturmwind was created exclusively during our free time. This also explains why it took so long.

5. Precisely, how long did take to develop Sturmwind? The game has been delayed several times, are you able to say when it will be released?

I can't give you exact date, but most of the production problems were resolved and should therefore mean no more delay. I would probably say in a few weeks. It took about 6 years to develop this game during our free time. Full-time, it would probably take between one and two years.

6. When and how did you learn to create games? Were how old you when you first became interested in the creation of video games?

I would say around the year 1986, when our parents had purchased us an Atari ST for Christmas. That was the good old days! We were about 14-15 years old at the time. It's really great because these machines were easy to take in hand and it was possible to learn to program very quickly. Then, we were more interested in consoles. The best way to learn in this area is a look at other source code and books. Today, it is of course easier: you find all over the internet in a few seconds.

7. Is Sturmwind your first game?

No we have been creating games as a hobby for years. Most were released on the Atari platforms, for example a demo for the Jaguar called "Native", or even the game "Alpine Games" for Lynx and "Impulse" for the Falcon. If you are a fan of the Jaguar, please take a look at the version of Impulse by Matthias Domin: http://www.mdgames.de/impulsex_eng.html (http://http)

8. Creating Sturmwind no doubt required much work. Where do you find the inspiration and are you scrambling after the fact at this point? With regard to an independent game, money was probably not your main motivation. Is that a challenge? Or did you just do it for your personal pleasure and for the pleasure of creating a game?

Probably for these reasons at the same time. Originally, the game was not expected to become important, but we played with it over so much time... to such point that was difficult to set a purpose. At some point, we were forced to set a limit or it would never have been possible to finish the game.

9. Do you expect to sell many copies of the game? Most of the time, independent games are not a great success, and this is particularly relevent given that Sturmwind was released on a dead console.

In fact, we have an idea of what we could be regarded as a success. It is difficult to guess at the moment what is the extent of the Dreamcast market and our goal is realistic.

10. In to the design of the game, was it impossible to use Katana, the official Sega SDK, for rights reasons? Of so then how did you do it?

There are no reasons to use Katana today, and it is really not worth trying to find it. This could bring benefits for debugging, but also disadvantages in other areas. Sturmwind was developed with KOS (a development environment free of rights) and we have modified many things to operate according to our needs for the project. There is no problem with KOS, it is perfect to develop with.

11. From a graphical point of view, Sturmwind is much more impressive than the other shoot'em up for Dreamcast. How is this possible without official development tools?

As I said, an official development kit is not necessary, as long as you know how to use the PowerVR chip and how to draw polygons, nothing more. The rest comes from your imagination, and no SDK creates itself as if by magic.

12. What advice would you give to a novice developer? Where should they start?

It is rather easy now, there is plenty of free tutorials around for all aspects of the creation of a game, graphics to programming tools. The best advice would be to start with some thing simple and an easy to learn programming language. It is not really the idea of the century to begin with attacking the Jaguar or the Saturn if you have never programmed in your life!

13. Are you already working on a new title? Dreamcast perhaps?

We have no plans for the future for the moment, everything will depend on our motivation and Sturmwind reception.

Phew that was hard work re-wording it all so it made sense!!!!!

yeah man, honestly can't wait, I've been speaking with the head of RSG Max Schaarl on and off since Jan 2011 and I'm confident we should have it before Winter... I don't see why it would be any later... but I'm not quoting him I'm just drawing an assumption, making an educated guess lol

Redspotgames is getting quite a lot of heat for how they handle things. The last e-mail from them told customers their games were shipped without insurance and that they had to pay extra now to get insurance. Customer support has been heavily critisized as well.

I think everybody will be happy when this is all over and Sturmwind is out. Duranik did something outstanding with this game, and it would be a shame if the publisher's errors would overshadow their great deed.

Yeah I just sent them the extra money to cover insured shipping. Really didn't want to but figured better safe then sorry. On a more positive note though PlayAsia has new pictures up of the limited edition and it looks like they added a Kraken!

Here's the full email for anyone who didn't get it.

+++ ATTENTION: We are NOT replying to incoming inquires from this address; for communication please contact http://www.redspotgames.com/support (http://www.redspotgames.com/support) with your order no. +++

Dear Sir or Madam
Dear customers and fans

The time has finally come: Sturmwind is about to see its release on April 24th 2013. We have received quite a lot of feedback regarding insured shipping and would like to clarify some details.

Shipping methods:
All pre-orders have been chosen (and calculated) with the standard 2nd class shipping method. It does not offer insurance nor tracking number. If the parcel is lost, we can not send replacements due to the limited quantities of Sturmwind.
This means, your pre-order of Sturmwind does not have any tracking nor insurance so far and therefore there are high risks of damage. This applies to all destinations and both Sturmwind editions (Limited Edition "Windstrke 12" is very fragile freight).

Still the standard shipping very safely packed by us!

If you want to upgrade to insured (international) shipping with tracking, the shipping will be increased by 14,30 EUR (18,60 EUR total). If you like to have this 1st class shipping w/ tracking number and insurance, please contact the redspotgames customer support and they will upgrade it for you: http://www.redspotgames.com/support (http://www.redspotgames.com/support)

Rates for 1st class shipping within Germany is 7,60 EUR - please contact the redspotgames online shop as well to arrange a change of the shipping.

The redspotgames online shop would like to accommodate all customers and agreed to use 4 times more bubble wrap for all insured parcels than we can pack into 2nd class shippings. We want you to receive the game as safely packed as possible.
Due to some questions: Play-Asia.com may not have reserve stock, so replacement and further benefits are only possible though the redspotgames online shop.

Payment within Europe: If you have a bank account and / or shipping address in Europe, please pay the total amount asap via bank transfer. It's free for you, we both do not have to pay PayPal fees and it enjoys priority concerning shipping.

Account holder: redspotgames
GLS Bank eG, Christstr. 9, 44789 Bochum, Germany
Account no. 8201588900
so-called "BLZ" 43060967

IBAN DE73430609678201588900

Important: Write your order no. incl. quantity, "Sturmwind" and the edition ("Limited Edition" or "standard") in the subject or description.

If you are using a bank account based in Europe, please be certain that you are choosing the SEPA method which is free of charge within Europe.
Some unexperienced bank employees will ask for a fee even though SEPA is 100% free within Europe. Insist that this method is free of charge.
Further information can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Euro_Payments_Area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Euro_Payments_Area)

We do not accept payments that contain fees on our account or do not include the full payment. Orders like these will be still "pending"!!

Payment international:
If your shipping address is outside Europe, please pay the total amount with your order no. incl. quantity, "Sturmwind" and the edition ("Limited Edition" or "standard") in the description to following PayPal address:

I'm managing a group order for the fans of the RGC. I can tell you customer support could be optimized, however as I work on a client support platform, I can tell you it is not as easy as it seems.

However I'm as impatient as you guys can't wait to play it. I could play a test version on the last RGC and I can insure you it is really worth playing.

Two weeks now and still nothing! I even filled out a support ticket asking for the tracking # and never heard back from them. Anybody got their copy yet?  :(

Maybe he's too busy playing the game  :63:

Not wishing to rub it into anyones face but I got mine exactly 7 days after it came out, not played it much yet but so far im loving it. I upgraded to 1st class insured and it took 7 days so im guessing second will take a while. I couldnt bring myself to risk not getting it after waiting sooo long. Hope some of u have got yours by now

Yeah I upgraded the shipping on mine too but still nothing. Did you ever get a email with a tracking # or even confirmation that they received your payment for the upgraded shipping? Glad you got yours though  :)

My Limited Edition Copy arrived this morning.   :77:

No warning as to it's arrival.  I nearly wet myself!

Glad to hear people are starting to receive this. I still haven't got mine yet but this at least gives me hope that it's on it's way.
That said I filed a complaint with paypal today for the extra money I sent for upgraded shipping service. Every attempt I have made to contact them on their website has been ignored and after three weeks it's pretty obvious they sent it regular mail and not by courier. I'm not giving them an extra $20 for nothing!

I'm in Canada but even still if they shipped it DHL like they said I would have had it long ago. Hell, even regular mail should have been here by now!

Redspotgames have just destroyed their reputation with the trouble concerning Sturmwind and the botched release.

Yeah they have made a hash of it that's for sure.

What's the thoughts of those who now have had the game for a few days?

Five weeks waiting, multiple tickets through Redspots support system, and one claim with paypal and I finally got a response from them today!!! Due to an error on their part they never shipped my game!  :-
Guess I'll see in a couple weeks but hopefully this means I will finally get to play this  :63:

Hey guys, thought I'd start a thread on this as I couldn't find one in the search. So has anyone else got this and played it for their beloved Dreamcasts yet?

http://www.redspotgames.com/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=19 (http://http)

http://www.duranik.com/index.html (http://http)

I will be uploading videos soon and possibly a video review. I love this game, its stunning and action packed, works/plays like a modern game or XBLA title and the soundtrack is insane. I bought the special edition blue box version which I adore.

Anyone played it or want to know more about it?

Its a Dreamcast 2d shooter side/vertical scrolling with gorgeous visuals and sound made by Duranik, this game was originally meant to be on the Jaguar as "Native"!!

Whoops... why couldn't I find that when I searched? Thanks whoever moved this, I couldn't find the thread  :-[

dcultrapro the search function of this site is a bit picky.  You need to be on the main page (not within any thread) to run a search.  Otherwise, it won't find what you're looking for.  Even then I've noticed it is not 100% accurate.  I was the one who merged the threads because I knew we had a thread for it.  Also, for homebrews, you can check here:  The Console Homebrew Games Library (http://http) as we keep a listing of homebrew threads for all systems there.  :)
