So, we have done various thread comparing games between different consoles and we've done a comparison between the Atari Lynx and the Sega Game Gear. How about comparing two, a bit newer handheld systems: the Sony PSP vs the Nintendo DS? Well, to get things started, here are two videos looking at Namco Museum on both systems.

Gotta say, for me it's the PSP - purely because a friend of mine gave me his for a good price which emulated PS1 games
Although both systems can be unlocked for homebrew the PSP wins due to the wide screen and component out. I've got 128gb of storage via a dual tf memory stick adapter. Also, the homebrew applications on the PSP are astounding. I can use my PSP as a second display on my PC or a USB joystick on my PS3!
Yeah, i think i prefer my DS overall purely for the games but i prefer my Vita over my 3DS XL for the same reasons.

The 3DS has a killer gimmick: true 3D display. Sadly, the games I want to play like Etrian Odyssey took the cheap route and were only partially 3D.. kinda like a Viewmaster toy. Flat 2D sprites at various depths do not make a game 3D.
PSP for me, though the DS has some great games that work well with the stylus, the PSP has loads more games that i prefer and the screen was amazing at the time, i bought a Jap machine in Dec 2004 and blew people away showing them Ridge Racer at work!
How about the comparison of the games in the videos? Is there a preference?Â

The larger/wider single screen on the PSP gives more viewing choices and a more roomy selection screen. If that's not enough I can take it into the living-room and play on the TV screen. Just my opinion
To me the PSP version is better also. Of course, the screen on the PSP makes a huge difference.

I tried hooking my PSP up to the TV but didn't like the way it looked blown up on the big screen. I only tried it once though and then threw the cable in the closet and haven't touched it since. Maybe I should try it again. Do you find some games look better than others when played that way?

The games look a bit dated as you can actually SEE the pixels. Unfortunately, on most TVs you're going to see a big black border unless you buy an upscaler. I use my PSP enough to warrant a component to VGA upscaler/converter.
For original games I would say the DS.
But as a machine, I'd go for the PSP.
I use it all the time 99% for emulation.
I wanted a DS for zx spectrum emulation. And while the emulation was great
I found the day-pad to be terrible (DSi).
I prefer the DS for this game. We play Pac-man with four DS systems. It is a fun game. I am the only one with a PSP close by. So might not be fair to say. Anyone know how PSP gaming goes with multiple PSP systems.
The DS is easy to connect and never lacks Pac-Man or Ghosts in my household.Â
I've never tried that with a PSP but I think it is done by wifi.
I have played several Nintendo DS games that only use one DS card to download to other players. Wondered if the PSP was the same or if each had to have a UMD?

I'd have to check on that. No idea, to be honest.
Anymore comparison videos coming?
Sure thing. Let's look at Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen on both systems. The DS version was actually two separate games, on for Autobots and one for Decepticons (only the Autobots has been posted). The videos below are of the beginning of both games (which include tutorials)...

Great choice!

I think the DS came with a little Autobot or Decepticon vehicle. Depending on the version. That probably helped game sales.
The PSP version really shines and gets my vote. Great to hear Peter Cullen's voice as Optimus.
I think it is remarkable to see just how different the game is between the two systems despite their being based on the same movie. I do prefer the PSP version as well.Â
The PSP is such a versatile beast I frankly forgot to compare native games.
I surprised a friend by setting up a macro and using my PSP as a joystick in Tales of Symphonia for the PS3. The next morning all his characters were 5 level higher and over a half-million richer :p
PSP version for sure.

It sure is! That's why I got a PSP when it launched. The DS wasn't even a consideration, to be honest. Not saying that the DS is a bad system, just that I found the PSP more appealing because of its versatility.
Well.....I prefer the finesse of the audio visual ability of the 3D games on my original PSP and the fact I can watch BSG 2004 episodes from UMDs sold for peanuts today whilst riding the train is the icing on the cake.
Nintendogs was probably the closest I got to having a reason to get a DS at the time.
Both have a cracking version of my fave Atari arcade game from the 80s but only the PSP allows co-op play via wifi and only needs one copy of the game for both users to be able to play it somehow. Win
I should find some other games the systems have in common to keep the comparisons going.Â
I think it comes down to
1. whether you like DS exclusive franchises enough to sacrifice almost PS2 levels of technical sophistication.
2. if the type of things you will run on them would benefit the second screen of the DS or needs PSP CPU power.
3. Gameboy compatibility requirement.
In all honesty personally I think it's the precursor to PS3 vs Wii in that they are so different you will either need to own both or one serves your needs fully.
Here is one more game to compare between the two systems...Kingdom Hearts...

I saw this thread and thought I might revive it. I currently own both system and have similar games to compare. First being sonic rivals 2 (psp) vs sonic rush adventure (Ds). Both the same franchise and came out within two months of each other. Sonic rivals two is designed to be racing game in the vein of sonic 2s multiplayer. Of course on a handheld this is an issue as you don't get as much time to play multiplayer so I think it should of been on home console where multiplayer could of been a bigger selling point rather than on a handheld where you can mainly face ai only due to nature of handhelds. Sonic rush was 2d platformer perfect for the DS so in my opinion wins out.
I'm also going to compare two fighting games ultimate mortal kombat (Ds) and street fighter alpha 3 max (psp). Both the same genre and came out within one year of each other. In this case the psp wins out as I would say the alpha series is more challenging to learn the mortal kombat anyway but then they use the second Ds screen for specials in mortal kombat which to me takes away a lot of the challenge of playing fighting games in single player. Both try to be a close as possible arcade ports and in that matter they both seems to succeed. I just personally prefer street fighter to mortal kombat.
Overall both solid system. Psp wins hands in graphics but the Ds really focused on graphics. Overall when comparing games it pretty even. I personally love both consoles and depends what I want to play which on I pick. I love mainly platformers and fighters. For platformers I pick Ds but for fighters i pick psp but both have a great library of game imo.
Cool, thanks for reviving the thread! I have both systems as well and they both are good.
I like the differences in the game selection. Both have enough exclusives where it is worth the investment owning each portable/handheld device.
The PSP has Wipeout so it wins my vote. I'm only aware of a re-release of the original F-Zero on the DS but I've got the original and the GBA version anyway.
Besides, the PSP is just a much cooler device.

I think the original f zero came out on 3ds so unfortunately it is not even on the Ds so psp wins hands down for you
