Who remembers Uridium? For those that don't it's a science fiction side-scrolling shoot 'em up originally designed by Andrew Braybrook for the Commodore 64 that was later ported to other machines such as the Spectrum and Atari ST. Well now Chema from Defence Force has brought the game to the humble Oric computer!

Below you can watch a demo of the gameplay (up to level 8, so still quite easy) of this forthcoming game, there are still some details to solve and things to finish. The game is run under Oricutron with the VSync hack mod enabled. In real hardware you either have the mod, or the game will ask you to calibrate the vertical retrace manually. If you want to know more about this project then check out the development topic (http://http) over at Defence Force forum.

Oricium has been released, screenshots, game info etc are available on the Defence Force site here:
http://oricium.defence-force.org/ (http://http)

This is more than just a Uridium clone. There are a few new additions to gameplay, primarily the switch flipping mechanism which I've not seen in a shmup before, as well as different level types entirely.

Download the game zip file and have a read of the (well presented) manual to find out more about how to play, else you'll be disappointed.

Another great work from Chema that takes an old game and reworks it not just for the Oric, but to put his own spin on it and add new elements.

Oh Wow this game is great, the switch flipping you mean being able to go left or right?

Switch nflipping meaning there are switches on the surface of the enemy ship.

You have to fly over a switch to flip it on/off.

There's a meter on screen that shows how many of the switches you have in the correct position.

To destroy the enemy ship, you have to set the switches in the correct combination.

This is why I advised RTFM ;) No read manual, no be able to play game and understand how you destroy dreadnaught. This isn't Uridium.
