Title: Xbox Classic thread
Post by: WiggyDiggyPoo on April 22, 2014, 14:24:05 PM
Ooooh is it retro?  :104:

For now I'd like to talk a little about the Classic Xbox by Microsoft.

[align=center:30zet8qj](http://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae174/wiggydiggypoo/RetroVideoGamer/Xbox%20Classic/xbox11.png) (//http)[/align:30zet8qj]

Released in 2001 (NA) / 2002 (JP/EU) it was Microsoft's first ever console and is definately a console developed by a manufacturer experienced in the PC market - its virtually a keyboard free PC with a lot of custom software for gaming.

MS heavily promoted the console with a celebrity launch and lots of acquisitions of software companies, 2 notables being Rare and Bungie; and it also had some of the best television adverts created for a console - remember the 'life is short' ad - which rivaled anything Sony was putting out.

The Xbox console also included as standard a high speed modem (broadband only) and a hard drive, it also had some crossover elements from the previous generation such as memory cards which are not seen on modern consoles.

Although the console could be considered a success, it never sold in huge numbers in Japan and in all territories was in an almost constant state of catch up to the PS2.

Gamewise it had many exclusive or quasi exclusives which it shared with the PC only, with perhaps its most famous being Halo:Combat Evolved.

Its legacy is it is perhaps best known for its capabilities once modded, which outside the obvious reason of game piracy presented users with the opportunity to create very capable media centres (XBMC started on this) and open the doors to a level of game mods not seen before (or since?) on a home console.

Nice FAQ here: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/microsoft/xbox/xbox-101-a-beginners-guide-to-microsofts-original-console (//http)

[align=center:30zet8qj]***************************[/align:30zet8qj]

So, is it retro?

Well I don't want to dwell on this as the main focus, but it needs covering - for me though yes it is is retro.

Its been discontinued by the manufacturer, its online services (official) no longer function and games are no longer released (officially) for the console. So seeing as (some) of its games are also now emulated on its successor the 360 all in I think its retro

[align=center:30zet8qj]***************************[/align:30zet8qj]

 :8:

My love for the big black box started in around 2000 when the first rather mental pictures of 'The X Box' as it was known appeared:

[align=center:30zet8qj](http://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae174/wiggydiggypoo/RetroVideoGamer/Xbox%20Classic/xbox-prototype.jpg) (//http)[/align:30zet8qj]

I had started the 2000s on a PS2 (for GT3) and had some classic games on that console such as GT3 or Red Faction, but a visit to my local game store sometime in '02 changed all that when I saw the Xbox and Halo.

Halo was my obvious main game to start with but I also enjoyed a lot of other games such as the Burnout series, Black, Midnight Club series, Driv3r (hey I liked it lol) and a lot of GTA:SA. For a couple of years I almost exclusively played Halo 2 but am working hard now to catch up!

I did mod my 'box and enjoyed the benefits  :-X of that, I also like to play games only available on a PC such as Doom 3, Half Life 2 or enjoyed arguably the best versions of games on that generation such as GTA:SA or Burnout.

Although I kept my PS2 I only bought 1 or 2 games for it after I got a Xbox, and I actually swapped my Gamecube for a graphics card to play Bf2 but thats another story lol.

Most of my friends also bought Xbox's, in fact looking back apart from 2d fighters which we kept our PS2's for we mostly stuck to the Xbox for a long time. Mine was in use for about 6 years on a weekly (daily?) basis which was by far the longest I stuck to a single console/computer. BTW I know other consoles lasted longer, this is just my story lol

There were some other services on the Xbox, not official, that I'd like to mention:

XLink Kai - was a tunneling service thats still active that allowed you to play System Link games over the internet, this was a incredible service and I made so many good friends on that. For a time I would be online (mostly Halo 2) every night in this.

Project Mimesis - something very unique it was developed as a homebrew Xbox Live like content delivery system. Never widely popular outside of (even for consoles) a rather hardcore group I loved this as I got several very well made levels for Halo 2.

XBMC - Xbox Media Centre, incredible software I felt for the time. Although 'home media' systems are now released that are as simplistic as a USB stick for your TV, this was the original IMO and I knew people that got a Xbox purely to mod it and use as a home media centre. "So popular even Bill Gates uses it" was its tagline although I don't know how true that is!

So....What next?

I'm starting over on some games I either didn't finish, or didn't play, and some I want to play again so first up is Project Snowblind - a FPS that's not well remembered but has some nice features.

In my living room I have the following consoles set up:
360, wii, PS2, Dreamcast and my Xbox.
It's the xbox that is used almost 90% of the time (more often than not using Mame and my two arcade sticks).
When my nephews visit, the first thing they say is "can we play the xbox?"

Outwith the modded capabilities, it's a very good console.
With them, it's one of the best.

Some favourites (not all exclusives)

Call of Cthulhu
Black
Jet Set Radio Future
Crimson Skies
Project Gotham Racing 2
Freestyle Moto X
Oddworld Strangers Wrath
Silent Hill 2
Forza
Burnout 3
Ninja Gaiden

The Xbox was a modders dream.. I loaded mine with many homebrew programs and games but the most used by a long shot was the awesome XBMC.. This program is still the best for me even though i use it on the PC now.

As for the games

Jet Set Radio Future
Project Gotham Racing 2
Freestyle Moto X
Forza

I will add more as i think of them.. I have over 100 games on this system also.

A long time ago, I actually DID have an XBOX. (I also had a 360, but for various reasons, I've grown to regret it, and I'm looking to sell the thing as soon as possible.)

My experience with the thing was... weird. See, while I got the original Halo YEARS after it came out, so long after I think I picked it up for like $10 or so new, I really didn't like it that much. I just thought it was pretty generic as far as FPSes go, and I always preferred the Timesplitters series, anyway.

What interests me about the XBOX, to be totally honest, are all the exclusives that came out for it that absolutely nobody talks about. Oh, goodness me, where do I start... I guess it'd be best to start with the games I had.

Kung Fu Chaos - super smash bros brawl of xbox (//http)

Kung Fu Chaos. Does anybody remember that Devil May Cry reboot from a couple of years back where Dante swears at everybody and everybody's dark and gritty, because it's what the kids like? Yeah, this is the first game from the guys who made that. It's... all right. It's basically Power Stone, with a few Mario Party-style minigames thrown in there. It would be a lot better if it weren't uncomfortably racist, though.

Voodoo Vince XBOX - The Bayou / The Sausage Factory Gameplay (//http)

Voodoo Vince. This game was... all right, although it's been an increasingly long time since I've played it. As far as I recall, it's basically a 3D platformer with a focus on puzzles, which, if that's totally your bag, baby, isn't really a bad thing. Sadly, they don't really do as much with the 'voodoo doll' concept as you'd think, and I think as far as it goes is being able to hurt yourself with various wacky animations as a 'smart bomb' attack.

Tao Feng: Jade Dragon vs Geist (//http)

Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus. This one's interesting as it was made by John Tobias, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat. It's a pretty standard 3D fighting game, although there's a couple of little gimmicks to it, like being able to leap off of things to hit your opponent, or being able to break their arms and legs. Which all that really does is make their punches or kicks do less damage. The fighting game community seems to REVILE this game, but I don't really see it. It's no Bloody Roar, sure, but it's not THAT bad.

So yeah, the XBOX was never my favorite system, even when I had one. Beyond Halo, and multi-platform games, most of which never had a huge advantage if you were playing on XBOX besides the occasional online play feature, all you really had were these weird exclusives like this.

...I'd kind of like to buy another one so I can mod it up, though...

Its odd for me as given the 100s of hours I put into Forza 2/3/4 I only really played the first one a handful of times, I was more into the Burnout/NFS/Midnight Club series. PGR also was a game I should have been into but wasn't.

Jet Set Radio Future though I didnt play was a game I liked to watch being played as graphically it was gorgeous, the cell shaded style was something I was a big fan of and for the same reason I liked Robotech and XIII though I at least played (and finished!) XIII.

Party game of the year!

KFC and some other 4 player games was what made the Xbox for me and my friends, outside of the obvious FPS there were some awesome multiplayer games including this:

Mashed Fully Loaded was a micro machines alike racer that was a lot of fun, winning depending on either the laps or if you got enough points before the race end - you won! Ultimate bragging rights!

Such an underrated machine Looking back. Especially with it coming with a hard drive etc.

It usually has the best versions of games and has some superb exclusives. its easily modified to play all regions and is an amazingly brilliant Emulator machine.  get it setup with a dashboard and with the HDD you can have a really cheap brilliant emulator or mame system

Just some of the console exclusives for that generation.

A superb updated port of Conker, which can be a little too much to buy on N64

Crazy Taxi 3 exclusive
Crimson Skies
Knights of the old republic 1 and 2
Panzer dragoon orta
PGR, Forza, and the 2 amazing Rallisport challenge games
Halo franchise
Jade empire
Gun Valkriye
Toe jam and earl 3
Stubbs the Zombie
Phantom dust
Phantom crash
Star wars republic commando
Otogi 1 and 2
Elder scrolls morrowind

just to name a few.

Hell, just as a Sega fan it is worth picking up due to the Sega output and exclusives on there.

Seems weird calling XBox retro, but i guess it is old enough now. Never owned one myself but brought quite a few games to play on my XB360 that were compatible and played on friends machines. Here are some of my faves:

Red Card Soccer - A great fun alternative footy game with very few rules and a fair bit of violence.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - Easily the best 3D PoP game made yet and the time mechanic was fantastic.
Panzer Dragoon Orta - A great edition to the series and worthy sequel to the great Saturn games.
Blade II - A great fun beat em up with plenty of nods and elements from the great film.
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4 - Still the best game in the Tony Hawk series, if only for the swearing British coppers!
WWF Raw - Decent fun wrestling game with a great roster.
Mashed: Fully Loaded - As others have mentioned a great multi-player game top down racing game.
The Warriors - Fantastic adaptation of the classic 70's movie mixing great Beat'em Up elements with an engaging story and probably still my second favourite all time Rockstar game after GTAV.

The Warriors is a game I always meant to revisit, it appeared late in the consoles life and like many other late arrivals is oft overlooked. Very faithful to the film and well received critically.

ohh man..were do I start?..I have 2 Original Xbox machines, with completely dedicated to Coin-Op v5 with over 5,000 roms stuck on there from Nes to Mame..a massive juke box of classics, my other one then has Atari ST, Amiga pimped out with about 100 Xbox Games..all booting from the HD on this another modding machine, ones that stand out for me

Scarface:the completely under rated GTA rip-off, but only Tony Montana survived this would of made a cracking sequel and a really good game with lots to do, pity it wasn't recognized for it's own originality when it came out.
Family Guy:, what's not to like, it's Family Guy true and true, I have this on the xbox360 aswell, but this is the better version in my opinion and well worth checking out if your a fan of Family Guy.
Otogi: Myth of Demons: Xbox's Answer to Onimusha series, but this completely 3D, no rendered backgrounds and plays very well, but it is quite wacky also and it spawned a Sequel
Otogi 2: Immortal Warriors: Continuing from where the first one left off, this is even more tighter in both the visuals and gameplay making this a must have for all xbox users.
Gunvalkyrie: Again another one off hit, that deserves a reawakening, this 3rd person shooter kicked ass with the best of them and to top it off, was done by Sega, which seemed couldn't put a foot wrong when it came to Xbox, An exceptional game
Phantom Dust: This is were I begin to get highly pissed off that this one didn't make it to a sequel, what a game, completely under-rated on every level and one that you mush play before you die, this was one of those games that made it worth having an xbox for, pure brilliant, there was a rumor late last year that this was to get the xbox360/PS3 treatment, but have heard nothing since :(.
Breakdown:Another classic, this time from Namco, First person, and not unlike Mirror's Edge which showed up many years later, this got rave reviews and rightly so, it's an Xbox exclusive and a mud pie in the face of PS2 fans, a fantastic game.

this all I can account for at the moment, but I know there are many more great xbox titles, likes of Buffy and Riddick, both great and exclusive titles, makes the Original Xbox well deserving of being apart of gaming fan or collectors collection, Highly recommend it and with it been available for buttons with a mod, this makes it even more worth having.

Scarface is I agree astounding, I was playing this until the day I got my 360.

Gunvalkaryie I think is a lost classic, ashamed I haven't played it :(

Xbox is King or at least it was good enough for Burger King to support the system with 3 games. :113:

I am a big Star Wars fan so Star Wars Jedi Academy was a must for me track down. The Warriors is on my top ten. A kid game but my kids had me hooked on Shrek 2.

sure thing, I thought the xbox360 game was so repetitive and gave us after about 2hrs of playing it, but never tired of the original xbox version, why I think personally its a better game, but who am I to argue, they are both good in there own rights.

FG is another I should have played, I have a feeling the Futurama game is also pretty good.

Project:Snowblind is proving to be quite the gem, lovely pseudo Deus Ex mechanics such as hacking and body enhancements, nice graphics and sound. Oh and of course a suitably cheesily acted story lol

Ditto, these were superb another one which didn't seem to get spot-lighted was Still life from Microids you play a female detective trying to unravel a series of brutal murders in 2004 being committed by a serial killer, but what makes the brilliant is her father was a detective in the 1920's on similar cases and has the player switching between both timelines to unravel the murders, actually years ahead of its time.

I would highly recommend this.

The original xbox was amazing, loved it soo much. I just uploaded a video of the awesome Enclave and have a bunch of other awesome games for it on there, some of my favourites are JSRF, Gunvalkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crimson Sea, any Burnout game and the list just goes on and on :D

I still have my crystal xbox one hooked up in the spare room, theres no way I would get rid of it and settle for the horrid attempts to port some games to 360. I just hook it up to my tv via component and it looks gorgeous

I thought I'd bump this thread now that I have an original Xbox.  I have to admit that I'm really liking the system and the games that I've gotten for it.  I'm trying to get several of the games recommended in the thread but I wanted to know of any exclusive titles that people consider are great titles to get for the system.

I'm also replacing the console I got since I got mine as part of a bundle and it really is beat up.

I was really late to the original Xbox party, and only bought one when Doom 3 came out on it. Then about 6 months later I bought a 360 so it really didn't get much use, but I have picked up a few games for it over the years.  Doom 3 is my top pick but I also really enjoyed Samurai Shodown V and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

I'll do you a list (-;

Morrowind I'm going to try and get in the new year I think, it's certainly a classic and a bit of a milestone for RPGs.

Doom 3 is awesome and one the first FPS games to have a very good co op mode.

I'll do three for now rather than a list, then add more as I think if em....

Yager

Its a flight combat game in a kind of futuristic Harrier jump jet, underated and largely forgotten I liked it.

Yager - Gameplay Xbox (Xbox Classic): http://youtu.be/k9RQlYlqi1o (http://youtu.be/k9RQlYlqi1o)

Burnout 2: Point of Impact

Some say this is the pinnacle of the series and I have to agree to a point, split screen is awesome (get wide screen settings right for vertical split) and a friend and I were so good at it, one crash would mean victory to the other.

Burnout 2: Point Of Impact - Gameplay Xbox HD 720P: http://youtu.be/dm0GPII9EJM (http://youtu.be/dm0GPII9EJM)

yeah some great exclusives there, looking forward to seeing episode 2 of this..but I know he sorta rushed, but i think he rushed through games that should of being given a video clip of, likes of Breakdown or Kakuto Chojin and Superman.

Cant remember Quantum Redshift being that hard, i think he just sucks lol

I wish he'd show footage of all the games tho, there's a few where we just see the box.

Otherwise good vid.

I have 2 original Xbox console atm, 1 boxed and 1 loose. Was thinking of soft modding the loose one, which from the YouTube videos looks fairly easy.

As for games I have 108 of the 772 (think that's right) PAL releases, so still a ways to go [emoji16]. Favoutites so far are definitely The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind GOTY and the KOTOR games. Really like Call of Cthulu too but that is one scary ass game [emoji33].

I've been pleasantly surprised with the Xbox.  I don't have as many games as you, stonemonkey, but the ones I have are really good.

The XBox was the first console I bought to start my retro collection last year, so been at it since then and tbh up until recently the games have been cheap as chips which has helped. Managed to get hold of Phantasy Star Online 1 and 2 for the XBox, the other week at the Retro Collect Video Games  Market in Leeds for £5 (about $8 ). Which was half the price I'd seen it elsewhere, so was chuffed with that [emoji16]

Its a very easy system to collect for, for some reason I think some collectors ignore it (snobbish?) when in fact its got some very good titles.

One of its main advantages is its ability to have 4 pads without adaptor, theres many games (official and homebrew) that take advantage of that  so if I was to recommend two:

Kung Fu Chaos - Often compared to Super Smash Bros, Ive never played that so cannot comment but this is great fun.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRqVYYCR6PA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRqVYYCR6PA)

Mashed: Fully Loaded - Comes into its own as a multiplayer, this had a horrible 'update' on the 360 but this version is the best.

I agree, I have have found quite a bit of snobbery going with this hobby as to what qualifies as retro or not. For me this generation is retro (just) but everything after like the Wii/PS3/360 are future classics, so better to get a head start now [emoji16]

And the XBox does have some wonderful games that can't be found elsewhere.

Well, the snobbery is fine with me as long as the prices stay as low as they are!  LOL

Title: Re: Xbox Classic thread
Post by: stonemonkeylives on February 16, 2015, 21:46:39 PM
It depends on the game and it's state, as would be expected. But it's not too bad, the owner tends to be fair about his offers, especially if your a regular customer.
Title: Re: Xbox Classic thread
Post by: TrekMD on February 16, 2015, 22:07:45 PM
That's good.  I can see some of the stores here giving me pennies for those games.

Keep hold of them, if there's a resurgance of interest in the XBox in 10 or so years, like there has been for the SNES and Sega Mega Drive at the moment, they could be worth a few more pennies [emoji12]

As many of you know, collecting for the original Xbox is rather easy as the majority of the games are pretty cheap to acquire.  That, however, is not the case with all games.  There are certain titles that can be quite expensive to get.  Metal Jesus looks at some of these games...

One of the worst kept secrets among retro gamers, OG Xbox games are often the bets looking ports, and extremely cheap! The downside is that with Xbox One (confusingly titled) backwards compatibility, we'll see speculation slowly rise those prices.

A few of my favourite original Xbox titles:

Fable (Lost Chpters)
Fahrenheit (AKA Indigo Prophecy)
Halo (First game was actually pretty good, haven't played another since Halo 2 though)
Jade Empire (Limited Edition)
Project Zero
Silent Hill 2: Inner Fears (Best version)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (and Sith Lords, but less so. Had this in PC but was really glitchy)
Tao Feng (Fun, but neglected fighting game)

MVL.

Not many systems I feel I want more games for, XBOX though isnt included in that... love the machine (when chipped its just so nice to use) and just know there is a bunch of stuff I still need to look at...

Amazing how many of the games still look so good... Up to now I havent reviewed any XBOX on my channel, but my first is already uploaded and ready for release a week Thursday... PGR2 still much be consider one of the best arcadie drivers...

LOL  Well, it is 18 years old now.  Right?  So, is it old enough to be retro or are these consoles some other class on their own?  Midtro?  :)

For me retro isn't an age, it's a feeling. The last gen that I get the retro feel from is PS1, N64, Saturn. Everything after that feels too modern for me, with the exception of handhelds which are a bit different. That's just me though and I'm probably in the minority.
Title: Re: Xbox Classic thread
Post by: TrekMD on January 30, 2018, 19:10:42 PM
No, that is precisely the issue.  It's hard to really define what retro is in a way that everyone agrees on.  That's why I joked about calling some of those midtro.  :)

Never owned one. At the time I kept looking at the games on the shelves for something that interested me and just didn't see it. Went PS2+GC that gen. (DC too if course).

PD Orta looks nice but not worth getting a console for. And I believe a 360 update fixed its BC feature for that game.

I hear it makes a great MAME box.
