Title: The Evolution of Retro Wrestling Games
Post by: TrekMD on October 19, 2013, 16:47:50 PM
I think it's time to look at another sport game and its evolution through retro gaming history.  Let's take a look now at retro wrestling games!  Let's start with the...

Atari 2600

Ttile Match Pro Wrestling
Title Match Pro Wrestling for the Atari 2600 (//http)[/align:25c1a9u6]

Sadly, the 2600 only has one wrestling title, so can't see much "evolution" of this specific sport for the system.

That looks fun.  Is it the only SMS wrestling game?

Nope, there is an official WWF game too:

That's cool.  I certainly recognize some of the wrestlers in it!

Agree. Those graphics are certainly better than anything NES had in those days.

This game has the look and feel of the Street Fighter games, only in a wrestling ring. Interesting note is that one of the posters below the youtube video says that the character Chun Li can be seen in the crowd.

So, that looks like four simultaneous players.  That'd be cool.

Y, 4-player simultaneous games at arcades were loads of fun. I wonder if it ever saw a home port that was 4-player capable? Hmmm..

It would be possible on the Jaguar using the Team Tap.  :)

True. And Jaguar would have done arcade-close graphics as well.

I looked up SNES and MD versions of Saturday Night Slam Masters on youtube, and the SNES shows 4 players on screen at the same time. I know there was a 5-player controller adapter sold for SNES. That would be cool with three other friends on SNES. I wonder if Genesis/MD allowed 4 players with any of its 4-controller adapters?

That looks like a good game on Lynx. I always wanted to try a Lynx, but handhelds were never a favorite of mine even though I have three Gameboys.

I am a little confused though. Are we talking about wrestling games specifically, as in ropes and a ring, or are standard fighters open to discussion on this thread as well.

It should be wrestling.  That's the closest thing on the Lynx, which is why I posted it.  Seems most people view it as a type of wrestling title.

well no it isn't Pitfighter is classed as a one on one fighter and not wrestling, there is no ring, although it has characters that could resemble wrestlers, but it's not a wrestling game.

Keep it clean, we came to see a fight not a dance :)

Greyfox already posted the amazing Championship Wrestling on the ST, but there was also a couple of licensed WWF games too from Ocean.

First up there was WWF Wrestlemania:

And then there was WWF European Rampage:

Golden Lips reminds me of Hulk Hogan.  I'm guessing that was intentional but they did not get the rights to use his name on the game.

Yeah it was only released in Japan and pretty much all the wrestlers are based on real professional wrestlers. Don't think you could get away with doing that now! I really want to get this game some day  :)

Yes, I'm sure they'd have lawyers all over them.
