Title: The Evolution of Retro Skiing & Snowboarding Games
Post by: TrekMD on September 27, 2013, 18:16:36 PM
Let's look at another sport that many folks enjoy, Skiing!  How has it fared among retro system?  Well, let's start with two games for the ...

Skiing

Ski Run

Ski Hunt

Though these games are different as to why they implement skiing, I think Ski Hunt is the better of the three.  It has in-game music and better graphics.

Are the second 2 games homebrew? Never heard of them!  :o

No, these are games from the '80s.  Ski Run was released by Suntek and Ski Hunt was released by Home Vision.  They originally were both PAL games.  You can find information about them at Atarimania: Ski Run (//http) & Ski Hunt (//http).

I have Ski Hunt, a conversion from the PAL version to NTSC, but it has constant screen roll so I can't really play it.

Ski Run looks terrible, but Ski Hunt is very impressive! Great music and graphics.

Two questions:

1. Who is Val d'Isere? I have the game but never knew who it was named for, as far as being of any importance.

2. Does anyone know why the embedded videos on this site only display as a full green screen whenever I play them through the RVG link. If I select to play them directly through youtube, they play fine, allowing me to see the actual video and not a green screen. I am using Firefox browser.

1. This reminds me of a very funny story, when I was younger our next door neighbour bought Val D'Isere and my brother asked him if he knew who "he" was. Our neighbour John replied "yes of course he is a brilliant skier, I have watched him loads of times". Val D'Isere is a skiing resort in France - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Val-d'Is%C3%A8re (//http)

2. I use Google Chrome and have never had a problem.

I like that Mogul Maniac by Amiga because of the first-person perspective of the game.  Not a frequent thing for this type of retro game.

I'm coming back to this to post another 2600 game that I just found out was made that is also about skiing.  This game is done in a first-person perspective, which is impressive for the 2600.  The game is Mogul Maniac!

I posted the A8 version of this on the previous page, I just found about the 2600 version today too when I saw it on Video Game Critic. I believe it's a prototype that was never released.

Apparently it was released with some special controller called The Joyboard.  The game and the Joyboard can be found on Ebay.

That controller certainly looks quite appropriate for this game.  I wonder if it also worked with the A8 version.

Perhaps they sold the game with the controller for the A8 as well.  The A8 version, of course, looks nicer than the 2600 version but that comes as no surprise.  :)
