I think it's time to start a thread on yet another portable system, the original Nintendo Game Boy. To get things started, I'm posting this review from Classic Game Room of the system...
Classic Game Room - NINTENDO GAME BOY review (//http)[/align:2blv86kw]
I have never played on an original GameBoy, likewise never played Tetris either.
Nice video

Except for the missing headphones. That is a bummer.

Nice video :)
Nope, not on any format. I have several versions for the original Nintendo and N64. Never played any of them. I prefer Columns on the Sega Genesis.

You should give Tetris a try. It is a fun game.Â
I will add it to my bucket list.
I like Jeopardy and Mole Mania on the GameBoy.

Now that's all the great GameBoy games covered the thread may as well be locked...

There clearly must have been other GameBoy titles that appealed to people. Here is a video looking at 20 titles that "defined" the system...

Indeed. My comment was intended as a bit of light-hearted banter.
I sometimes get confused about GB and GBC games. Some Pokémon games were considered GB and some GBC. Was Metroid II a GameBoy title or GameBoyColor?
In the bigger picture it does not matter. GB games will play on a GBC. Except for the original Road Rash.
Looks like Metroid II is an original GameBoy game:

My brother had a GameBoy when we were growing up, this was one of my favourite games on it:

Funny how the rider just stands up and picks up the bike again when he falls. That's a nice touch.Â

I have Motocross Maniacs 2 for the GBC. Made by Konami. I really enjoy it.

I did have it and recently picked up a copy, as before i really aren't a fan, i found the physics aren't anything to write home about and the graphics too. May have missed something

Russian leader Putin smiles like that as well. What are you up to?
These were both great games on the GameBoy, far better than many of the other home versions!

Gameboy Game - Double Dragon II (1991 Acclaim Entertainment) (//http)
It's ironic that the GameBoy got a port of Double Dragon that was better than the port for the NES!Â
It is easy to see why the GameBoy was a success. Being able to play hit games on the go with excellent battery life.

I remember seeing this printer accessory for the GameBoy advertised. Did anyone get it? How about the camera?
GAME BOY BOOSTER, PRINTER AND CAMERA REVIEW (//http)[/align:2vzgmy8v]
Good friend of mine who knew i A)Loved Retro and B)Did'nt have a GB...bought me a GB that had the Camera+Printer with it.
The GB i've used all of 4 times (to try and play Alien III and T2) but cannot get a good enough picture (that LCD screen is an abomination) and the camera+printer, never even tried.
Well, it seems that it is just for fun. Clearly the guy making the video had some making the demonstration.Â
I know its technically not an original gameboy but I now have a gameboy colour, I have Tetris, the first two Mario Worlds and a couple other good games which I'm liking, I just don't think I could honestly ever enjoy playing the original green screen one personally. I did play it when I was younger and I always ended up going back to my Game Gear, that's just me, but the Colour is pretty nice and the batteries just REFUSE to die lol
Another GameBoy game that I thought was excellent is Dragon's Lair. It actually bares little resemblance to any other game in the series and this is because it is actually a conversion of the Spectrum platformer Roller Coaster. Elite simply changed some of the graphics but otherwise the game is the same. It's quite hard but worth persevering with and some of the graphics are superb.

Ahhh.Never knew that...
Had prev.only seen Roller Coaster on Speccy on Opa-Opa's superb Weekend Gamer TV show, never knew it turne up on GB as Dragon's Lair.
Cheers's Laird.
Anyone got any good games to recommend then? I have the colour so colour or original games would be fine

T2+Alien 3 on GBÂ
MGS, Shantae, Bionic Commando and Aliens:Thantos Encounter on GBC.
Ghostbusters 2 is one of my favorite Gameboy games so I will recommend itÂ

Knew i had more GBC titles.
Try Perfect Dark on GBC.
Why?
Technically superb (huge adventure, has MP option, uses rumble pak, cutscenes have sampled speech, uses GB printer etc etc)., it's a prequel to N64 Perfect Dark.
Main game is an isometric 3D jaunt, sees you rescuing hostages, defusing bombs etc etc, but there's also a stack of mini-games:
Jungle chase (a Spy Hunter affair), River Crossing (side scrolling shooter) and Sniper Mode.
Great sound effects and speech and if you own the N64 original, you can use the transfer pack to unlock cheats etc.
Game is rock bloody hard mind!.
Also R-Type DX, Driver, Tomb Raider all said to be good.
Also:
Mission Impossible (Rebellions crack at a MGS style game).Look out for the 'Agent Organiser' feature which turns your GB into an address book, calculator, message sender and infa-red controller!
Evel Knievel (the Joe Danger of it's day)
Another GBC game if any ones interested in trying something different:
Rainbow 6

Crawfish did it, so it's as you'd expect a technical marvel in terms of what they've pulled off in terms of depth and ambition. Not your usual handheld fare either as it demands more of a long play session rather than a quick 10 min bash.
Glad to see some of the titles i've mentioned are getting some attention, the GB is not a device i'd put high in my all time fav.consoles, but getting a GB player for GC along with GBA+Micro really opened my eyes to some real gems.
Think after playing GB Perfect Dark and seeing what was achived on such primitive hardware, made Perfect dark 0 on 360 even more dissapointing.I know it had a difficult gestation, starting out on GC, then Xbox, then 360, but all formats far more powerful than the GB series, yet clearly game lacked the genius game design that went into the hand held game.
Proof if it were ever needed that raw hardware power is meaningless if you've not the ideas to make a decent game.
Few more:
Resident Evil:Gaiden (GBC).Set onboard a ship, had you punching the undead!
Arcade Hits (Defender+Joust) GBC
Dropzone (GBC)

Top 25 Greatest Nintendo Game Boy Games Of All Time (//http)[/align:qxrgf18k]
Good list of games, but for me Tetris has to be number one!
Pokemon may have kept the Gameboy going strong, but it was Tetris that single handedly won the handheld war for them. $99 price point didn't hurt it either.
I do love Donkey Kong, I think it's the best game on the system personally, and I play it regularly on the Super gameboy. I was expecting to see Motocross Maniacs on that top 25 list, but alas it's not there. That was a pretty popular title around my high school at the time.
I'd agree that Tetris has to be up there, if not on the top spot. That is the game that really sold the system. Donkey Kong is also a fantastic game on the system. I reviewed it and loved it.Â

Quote from: "Lorfarius"I might do a side by side comparison vid of the Lynx and GB versions of Desert Strike.
That would be cool!
Tetris was great on it - it actually still is if you can get the right lighting conditions so you can see the screen....it's amazing how tolerant people were of that limitation.
Donkey Kong '94 is a brilliant game - worth getting it for GBA or some other means to play it. It has nice borders when played via a Super Gameboy that shows cabinet art. It's a pretty big game and it extends he basic DK gameplay really well with key collecting being a big part of the gameplay that is a nice blend of puzzle/maze and action.
My wife was obsessed with some puzzle games for it. Splitz is a sliding square/picture game which I found really hard but she completed and she also completed Mario's Picross for it.
There aren't many games I consider a "must", but to the earlier poster who hasn't played Tetris - you really need to try it - if not on Gameboy then on some other platform. People will be playing Tetris 100 years from now.
Must games are things like Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros 2 and any of the WarioLand series. There's so many to choose from its just untrue including some incredibly deep titles (Final Fantasy comes to mind).

Tetris Review - Nintendo GameBoy (//http)[/align:3qnots3j]
This month is an important month in the history of the GameBoy. Here is an article from Retro Gaming Mag by Carl Williams: Nintendo Sold their 100 Millionth Game Boy Hand Held 15 years Ago – This Month in History – April 2000 (//http)
Although I realise it came out around a year before the colour...
Am I the only one that wishes Nintendo had released the game boy light around the globe and not just Japan..
I'd love one, but they're pricey unless your in Japan on holiday or something and find one!
But I own 2 different game boy's, a grey one (original) and a yellow one.
Loved the system still do, just wish i had the patience to play them without a light...like other people do.
Though I don't agree putting an sp light in the original...it messes with the originality of the system!
I never had a GameBoy back in the day. I got an Atari Lynx instead but I did play with my aunt's GB. Primarily, I played Tetris which was the killer app for the handheld.Â

See i got the Atari lynx with about 16 games (14 of which were boxed might I add :p haha) and I really like it, though I can understand why it didn't break through over the game boy with its size and battery consumption (hell I play it on a power cord while watching tv) even though looking back it may not have seemed like a serious competitor it really could have been.

Yes, happy birthday Gameboy
I recently found my old Gameboy Advance which i had modded back in the day to run NES roms.
It has about 50 nes games on one cart! Love that thing!
When the original Gameboy came out I was too poor to afford one
I have a Gameboy pocket from when I was younger. Recently I managed to find my pokemon games again (including yellow!).

I got my Lynx out today and found an old Gameboy in a box next to it.. This is an original Gameboy, never knew i had this but it got in there somehow lol..
My lad could not believe the size of it, we had a bash on the few games i have including Tetris.. I have this at work now, might as well use it more and show my love of retro of lol..
In fact a few guys at work said "oh wow, not seen one of them for years" and a few said "what the hell is that" lol.
Nice find! It's primitive looking today for sure, but Tetris is still great on it

Haha!!
The screen on the original Gameboy is absolutely useless for playing arcade games, people who owned old LCD hand helds like Galaxy Invader etc would be disappointed because it blurred any moving pixels as well as being pasty green and pasty yellow low contrast colour combination. It's a bit like an early 80s electronic typewriter green and yellow LCD and with a refresh rate measured in minutes.
Tetris is one of the few games you can put up with the horrible screen, horrible D-pad (terrible for diagonals) and shiny plastic useless domed fire buttons I think. The only reason it even ended up on the Gameboy is because Robert Maxwell's idiot son fudged up the negotiations otherwise Andromeda Software UK would hae got the rights from the Kremlin. Yeah the whole thing is an amazing story.
Then again Nintendo never made anything cutting edge technically, from Famicom to Wii U they have a history of using the bare minimum technically to get by and make massive profits (whilst 3rd parties make huge losses as their conversions suffer due to terrible hardware compared to their other conversions sold on rival systems from Sega/Sony etc)
GameBoy owners, you may find this article of interest: 5 NEW INDEPENDENTLY DEVELOPED GAME BOY GAMES RELEASED (http://retrogamingmagazine.com/2016/07/09/5-new-independently-developed-game-boy-games-released/).
Pokemon Go for Android and iPhone has reminded me of another classic in the Game Boy library: Pokemon Red and Blue. The game was truly a milestone in handheld RPGs. I still have my Game Boy Color, but the screen has faded over time and it's not quite as enjoyable to play. Luckily, I own a Super Game Boy and can play all my cartridges through my Super Nintendo to experience it on the big screen. The Super Game Boy really does open up the entire Game Boy library. Some of those indie games look pretty good, Trek. I wonder if they'd be compatible.
Many times the games are compatible for play through Super Game Boy so it may be worth a try. :)
