Seems we have threads for the Neo Geo X and the Neo Geo games but not a thread about the Neo Geo AES console. So, Here is a review of the console to get things started...
NEO-GEO AES Review (//http)[/align:6a2b8h1e]
I remember the first time I saw the Neo Geo, I had a Megadrive at the time and I was out browsing game shops for something new. I saw the Neo Geo in one of the shops being demo'd and I remember being blown away by it. The I as I recall I was even more blown away by the price of the console and the games and decided against buying one.
I'd still like to own one now but they are still too much of a luxury price. See this Ebay link (//http) for detailsÂ
It was about time! :13:
I was really happy with the SNES but I always wanted to have a Neo Geo AES, it was the arcade at home, nothing could be better. Now it's my favorite console without any doubt. :o

Nah, I bought one of these and spent less than $500 including shipping some months ago, with patience everything pops at a decent price. That guy is just a speculator, sadly there are tons of them selling Neo Geo items.
You can buy an AES for about 200€ including one common game but I'd recommned everybody to look for a MVS, pure RGB, stereo depending on the board model and much more affordable game prices. MVS it's a win-win if you're a gamer, AES is just for collectors with deep pockets.
Some of the best games are relatively cheap on the AES tough, Samurai Shodown 2, Fatal Fury Special, some KOF etc... I have most of my favorite games on the AES and the rest on MVS.
Alberto, will the MVS play the AES games?
I would remove AES from the thread title, make it a thread for all 3 versions of the Neo Geo (CD included)
Quote from: "TrekMD"Alberto, will the MVS play the AES games?
No, the boards are a bit different but there are converters that allow to play MVS carts on the AES, they're not cheap but are a good option as the AES games are more expensive most of the times.

Yes, Neo Geo is all, AES, MVS or CD, just different formats.
I also remember seeing these in a couple stores when I was young. Obviously the price put it out of my reach so I would go to the arcade and play Neo Geo games.
I have a Neo Geo CD now though and around 30 games so it's nice to be able to play these games at home. My only complaint would be the single speed CD drive. Most games are okay but some of the larger KOF games are almost unplayable for me with the excessive load times before every match.
I've changed the topic header to allow for all the NeoGeo consoles. Here's a review of the NeoGeo CD. Looks like it's not the best NeoGeo to get.
Classic Game Room HD - NEO-GEO CD console review (//http)[/align:34elngwj]
The Neo Geo CD is not a bad console when playing low meg games, as Shadowrunner says playing on it a KOF or Last Blade is a test of patience.
The best thing is the games are affordable.
I like it but mainly because it was my first Neo Geo and have really good memories, back then loading times wasn't a big problem for me but now I rarely use it. Some arranged sondtracks are great and its pad is the best one I tried for fighting games, shame they're fragile.
The Neo Geo CD also has a few quality exclusives like Crossed Swords 2 and Ironclad ($$$). Some games also had extra content/modes added for the CD versions like Voltage Fighter Cowcaizer and the Metal Slug games. I got the NGCD back when it was still at retail since it was the only affordable option.
A consolized MVS or supergun is the best way to play non-emulated Neo Geo though. A single slot motherboard and Vogatek supergun is a simple and cheap entry platform. MVS carts are cheap... starting at $10 and even the rarest of MVS games max out at around $250. The quality AES titles can cost thousands because they're 'collectibles'. And, since MVS arcade carts are running the exact same code as the AES home carts, they both support either arcade or home cart mode. Just add a unibios and toggle to AES mode if you really want the home cart experience.
I had quite a bit of Neo Geo AES stuff at one point, probably about $4000 worth, with a super-modded console and a handful of the expensive carts, some were conversions. Sold it all to buy a Nissan 350Z, then sold that later on lol. Anyway, had some fun with the system for years, but am glad to not be associated with the Neo Geo community anymore, which is overrun with straight up communist douchebags.

Not sure but when I say that about NG.com, I mean for real, unabashed hammer and sickle flag waving communists. Not just hyperbole.
I'm with 64bitRuss on that. It's a real niche community, and newcomers aren't welcome. You're expected to post tons of trash, rather than worthwhile content. Back on subject, there are a few decent multi-carts for the MVS, although they do include a bunch of hacks and multiple versions of the same title, but it's a cheap way to establish your collection and decide which titles are worth owning the original of. The arcade stick is a thing of beauty - I use that across all three of my NG's, although I do have a fondness for the CD pad. I did start collecting AES titles, but to be honest, they're not good value when you compare it to the cost of MVS carts. As its been pointed out, both carts contain the same code, and a Universe BIOS will allow you to switch between home and arcade modes. My 4-slot is an easy conversion (the BIOS is socketed), but my soldering skills are not quite up to the task on the AES!!
For those unfamiliar with the NeoGeo MVS, here's a video review of the arcade machine. Those carts are huge!

NG.com is not the Neo Geo community IMO, it may be the biggest forum but 90% of the people there only post shit and I think most of the times they're not even Neo Geo fans. I read it from time to time to see if something new is planned but never bothered to try to be part of them.
There are A LOT of people, true Neo Geo fans, who doesn't bother to post or even register there for the same reasons you guys stated.
I'm a mod at a spanish Neo Geo forum with about 170 members, all of them love this system and we never had any disrespectful post or thread there in the year and a half the web is working, people just enjoy playing and talking about the games and such.
NeoGeoforlife (UK), NeoGeoKult (France) and our forum, CulturaNeoGeo (Spain), are examples of great forums with tons of good info and good people. We are the true Neo Geo community.

LOL! Now there's a line straight from my arsenal!Â
I don't own a Neo Geo but have played loads of games on it and its a fine machine.
I picked up the Neo Geo Collection for the Wii sometime back and it's got a brilliant selection of games on it.
One really stood out though and took me by surprise and is now my favourite Neo Geo game:
Sengoku - NeoGeo Playthrough [1/4] (//http)
Yeah Sengoku is a sweet game, and all 3 games in the series are top notch. I played Sengoku 3 an awful lot, as it had a nice combo mechanic, and it was one of the first new releases I purchased on home cart.
Great series! I only own the first one but played also the sequels, all of them are fun and the best beat em ups of the Neo Geo IMO.
I love the soundtrack and the general ambiance of the first two Sengokus, the only bad thing is the collision detection which is a bit cheap but this kind of games are made to be coin munchers so it's not susprising.
AUSRETROGAMER has posted an interview with Steve Riner about the Neo Geo. Figured I'd share that here: Interview with Steve Riner: Neo Geo Guru (//http).

I don't think I'd ever heard of him before but it was a nice little read.
I keep thinking I want to get into the Neo Geo more, but then I look at the prices and that pretty much kills the thought!

Yes well, that's why I have this...

That may be the closest I'll get.
And I have this!

Boy, those two look oddly similar.Â

It's cool they made the compilation for more than one system.Â
I just came across these brilliant videos:

Yeah I thought it was a really fascinating story, I think we all dreamed about owning a Neo Geo when we were kids.

I always thought it was a neat alternative to the cart version. Never owned one. I did use the DreamCast to emulate the discs. Not the same but it was neat to see what the Neo Geo CD was really like.
I owned a CDZ for a few years around 2000, really enjoyed the system, its probably my second favourite console (well the aes if i could afford one!) has the highest ratio of great games.
The only bad thing was the loading on the cd systems, though the CDZ was double speed so it wasn't too bad, certainly quicker than downloading and installing and then updating a game nowadays!
Pretty cool, Jay. Good to see that the system was worth it.
Yeah like you I really want one but the costs are so prohibitive to me at the moment.
Yes, price is holding me back as well. I keep checking to see if the prices goes down on Amazon. I even checked to see if they'd cleared it at my local Toys'R'Us stores but they don't even carry it.
I love my Neo Geo CD, I was actually playing it earlier today. I'm starting to build a good collection too. I now have 2 systems(1 Japanese, 1 USA), and I think I have close to 60 games now. There was only 100 games released so I'm doing pretty goodÂ

I'm going to take some pictures soon and post them.
That's an excellent collection. You're doing very good indeed!
Quote from: "TrekMD"That's an excellent collection. You're doing very good indeed!
ThanksÂ
Congratulations onthinice, you own a nice collection!
I had a NeoCD in 1996 but sold it a year later to buy a Saturn. A couple of years back I had the luck to find an almost unplayed console which was bought in the same place I bought mine. The owner played it for less than a week and stored it for 15+ years. One controller is still sealed and the memory of the console is still unformatted.
This console is great and most of the games are really affordable compared to the cartridges, most of them have enhanced music and more options. The fail was some games have smaller sprites and details and the loading times are huge in games but overall is a very nice system with top games.
I just ran across this on a Neo Geo forum I read, it's an episode of a 90's French sitcom with a Neo Geo tie in (featuring the AES for about 2/3 of the episode. I think I still prefer Drew Carey's obsession with all things Sega, though. Neo Geo home system French Sitcom AES (//http)
Thats brilliant.
More Neo Geo from the guys at Game Sack!

this was a great show, some brilliant games on that Neo-Geo machine
Great video. That console is remarkable and I'd love to have one.
Wish I'd been collecting for it all along. Have to say, the fighting games are unmatched
I really didn't hear much about the Neo Geo when it was originally out. I've learned about it mostly here in RVG. It does have some pertty cool games. Wish I had known about ti back then!
I would say the Neo Geo systems are my gaming Holy Grails. They look so amazing and really remind my of what I used to be like as a gamer back then.
It took 13 years or so, but as of tomorrow SNK/Playmore will be going back to their original name and logo!
Really great to see them back again!
That is cool!
Very cool :) Looking forward to new games!
Hope the change is for the good, i hear good signs of things to come, though lets hope they still stick to pixel-art if they bring out a new Metal Slug, i don't want blur-o-fest updated pixels, the originals are classics, more of, lets hope!
Really want a Neo-Geo CD again atm! I owned a CDZ back around 2000-01 and helped crack a few games back then :-O An AES is too much even though that's my dream console and one of the few machines i've never owned.
Trouble is the CDZ have upped in price, paid £200 back then, hard to get them under £400 now, of course they load games quicker, but i may have to settle for a normal system, can pick one up for £100.
Interested in some of the homebrew stuff, as well as unofficial games, there's 10 or so MVS games that have been made into CD .iso's to play (games that can fit into the 7mb system ram though)
Anyone else own a CD Neo Geo and still use it?
I still have mine of course and I use it. A CDZ would be nice but unless you're playing a lot of the really big fighting games the loading times aren't that bad with the regular system.
I still have my original NGCD that I bought at retail but it doesn't get much use. At this point, I think the best route for Neo Geo is to get a 1-slot arcade PCB, cheap supergun, and an MVS multicart. The MVS library is much larger than NGCD (or AES), and most MVS carts are fairly cheap if you want to collect originals. Takes a bit of setup to get the supergun configured, but it's worth it.
Not liking the overall appeal of the MVS esp in front of my TV.
Am really tempted at the NeoSD with an AES, yeah i know its expensive, but one off cost to get my most dreamed of system with every game and looks great, total cost would be around £700, it might be oh sod it why not kinda impulse buys lol
So the big fighting game tournament EVO is happening this weekend and SNK tweeted this!

I'm excited 8)
Cool!
Pre-orders for Xeno Crisis for the Neo-Geo and CD are now open, i put my order for the CD version in, new games are very few and far between!
https://shop.bitmapbureau.com
I was looking at that last night. Pretty cool that they are doing a CD version! Not too expensive either.
Bloody amazing all the systems they decided to support.
Anyone with a NeoGeo? Check this video and isee if you agree with the choices...
https://youtu.be/HPGnJ-fdlrU
For the most part I agree. Neo Bomberman and Prehistoric Isle 2 didn't get home releases so I don't have that much experience with them, but between AES cartridge and CD I have all the rest and they are very good games.
A lot of people think that the Neo Geo is nothing but fighting games but this shows that there's a lot more to the system.
Well, if you go by what's on the NeoGeo Mini, you'd say that there are mostly fighting games on the system. It has other games that are good but the majority are fighting games, so that, unfortunately, reinforced that belief.
Yeah, the mini was very fighting game focused. Most of the games in this video are third party and I assume they didn't want to pay a licensing fee to include them. Cheaper to only put SNK made games on it, which were mostly fighting games.
This seems rather cool. Check out this video by John Hancock about a consolized Neo Geo MVS...
