Anyone ever own a Gizmondo?

I was so close to getting one when they were up for pre-order. Wish I had. Its funny how the failures end up being worth more than the successes sometimes. Lol

It was released back in 2005, sadly it holds the record for the poorest sales record for any handheld. There are some interesting stories about how the company was a front for fraud. And the sale of the handheld was second on there minds.

I remember this coming out but I never got one. I also had some type of gps in it and blue tooth...quite different from the other handhelds.

same here - i really craved for it but got a DS instead (worth less now, however not a car crash of a console so oh well!)
if memory serves, it came in two flavours, the standard model, and a cheaper, ad-supported model! which i thought was a pretty good idea (The new kindle has this as an option too, but the device isnt as suitable)

I bought a Gizmondo via eBay and have since amassed the following games, all CIB, for it,

Classic Compendium 1
Classic Compendium 2
Fathammer Classics (Angelfish, Super Drop Mania & Stuntcar Extreme)
FIFA Football 2005
Gizmondo Motocross 2005
Hockey Rage 2005
Pocket Ping Pong 2005
POD: Point of Destruction
Richard Burns Rally
SSX 3
Sticky Balls
Toy Golf
Trail Blazer

I keep meaning to flash the firmware to open up its potential and to play the several unreleased game ROMs that have appeared on the 'net. Overall, I quite like Gizmondo. Sure, not much was released for it but the real shining stars are its superb version of Trail Blazer and POD: Point of Destruction which is a classic old school score attack shmup with a twist. I rate the latter of those two so highly it'd make my personal Top 50 games of all time.

Really want to pick one up for the right money though.

Is Sticky Balls worth getting? I guess as a collector i will buy whats on offer.

Yep, Sticky Balls is a novel little game that's not as simple as it might first appear.

Here's a video review - Sticky Balls on Gizmondo (//http)

The only pain I've had with Gizmondo is with the battery. The battery in the one I bought via eBay wouldn't hold any charge whatsoever so had be played via the mains. Another eBay seller was offering BNIB higher capacity batteries so I bought one of those instead... but alas, it annoyingly has the exact same problem. Maybe the tech' of said batteries was hopeless and they simply won't recharge/hold any charge after several years. Playing on it via the PSU/mains isn't so bad for me tbh as I'd be unlikely to ever take it out and about anyway.

I've two.  One working and one 'bricked', or something, needing a fix.

I've some 10 games and loking to collect the whole set.

I think the Gizmondo is a lost treasure and a handheld most overlook.  I'd recommend picking one up.

I certainly will be.. Just need to find one at the right price.

Yes the real shame is the story behind the system, because it was all set up to be a nice system, with deals in place for dl music, films, game deals with big publishers in place, and at the time was the cheapest gps unit on the market, of course though with $300 million blown in one year on partys, cars etc it all went tits up.
More of a shame because the actual Gizmondo was ok, sure the battery was naff, though the premium one was much better, the d-pad wasnt the best but still playable enough, and the booting took a minute (tip leave it in standby), but the games in general were average to good and theres more unreleased games and betas to try online giving around 30 games, of course if u unlock the firmware, u can play loads of emulators, wince, ppc games, so at least early adaptors got something in the end!

If somebody posts a topic for the systems must have games then I will link it into the guide as I know nothing about this machine!

I really like P.O.D. on the Gizmondo: POD: Point Of Destruction on Gizmondo (//http)

It's a trippy descendant of Targ, Millipede, and Space Invaders. If you like arcade classics, it's worth getting a cheap system just to play that game. I thought the rest of the library was very mediocre... some of the unreleased games were technically impressive, but I didn't find anything that held my interest.

I'd rather play the N-Gage. :D

Nice review, and makes a change from the usual take the mick out of the name and slow boot etc pity he didn't review more games but overall nice to watch.

Btw there was US Sat Nav software released for it, but it's VERY rare, only a handful of copies left the warehouse before the administrators moved in, same for the EU version, the UK versions are easy to find though.

Cheers.

It's a pity the remote display software can't record video, I've tried other software but it's not fast enough to capture and the delay just turns it into a sideshow, and of course theres no Gizmondo emulators, so for now this is the only way to capture footage!

What's the remote display software?

Quote from: "zapiy"What's the remote display software?
It's Microsofts own software that when used with Active Sync (connect your Giz to your PC with USB cable) it displays the Gizmondo display on your computer screen, but the screen update isn't fast enough for video, but the images on my site were all taken through this software.

I just found about this game today, the unreleased Colors for the Gizmondo. It's basically a 3D Grand Theft Auto style game and looks incredible, I can't believe this was never released - it would  have been a real system seller:

Yeah Colors was in development as long as the Gizmondo was! It's a good game, albeit slightly cut down from what they were gonna do, the GPRS multiplayer and GPS parts were cut due to Tiger Telematics going under, but it has big maps and great graphics, I have a review on my site of what I thought of it.
As you say, it's a shame as this next batch of games from Colors onwards would have made people sit up and notice it more.
