I have never even played on one or even seen one in the flesh.

However when I was in Kart Klub in Aldershot a couple of months ago they had a nice stack of boxed Intellivision games there!  8)

Thats ok pal, not a huge fan myself.  I do love the way the controllers slip into the top of the machine though.

Never liked those 8-way discs.

only experienced it via  a plug and play I bough from woolies for a fiver.  Some fun games.

Did many people in the UK own one?  they seem rare

I know it was released in the UK but it didn't do very well at all which explains why I have never seen one.

to be fair I don't remember anyone with an Atari VCS or Colecovision either when I was young - but maybe they were just a few years before my time.   was probably pricey back in the day

I bought an Intellivision II for cheap during the early 80's crash. I have a dozen or so games for it, but it never got much play time.

One of my friends had an INTV back in the late 70's, and the two player 'battle' strategy games were fun. More depth than any of the 2600 games. (Sea Battle, Armor Battle, Space Battle, etc.) They started to look archaic pretty quickly though. By the time I bought an INTV I had moved on to the Atari 800 and games like Eastern Front were far beyond the INTV strategy games. And, the Atari 800 (and maybe 2600?) were better than the INTV for any arcade style gaming...

I have one.  Bought it unboxed from a carboot some 5+ years ago.  Came with around 5 boxed games.  I played each game for a few mins or so.  The unit then sat under the bed in a carrier bag for a few years.  It then moved to under my game TV in the spare bedroom.  I've not played it since the first time.

Not seen any more games to add to my collection for it in the wild.

To be honest I forget I have it most the time.

i wish had started collecting properly 5 or 10 years back - i imagine pre-ebay a lot of 'exotic' consoles were going for pennies...

Would be cool if somebody posted a thread on what is worth getting.

there are those naughty polish multicarts which get you all the games for about 50 - I guess that's the best buy - but not very legal.  I prefer to buy originals as I like the boxes

I have an intellivision, well, for some reason 3 of them actually. There were plenty of fairly good games for it released under the intellivision branding but some of the best/more interesting (and more expensive to buy now) were released by imagic, Parker and activision.

I would say the top 15 games (no particuar order) for Intellivision that I enjoyed playing are:

1) Dracula (imagic) - a fun game where you have to catch your victims and bite their necks to keep your blood supply up and then get home to your coffin by dawn

2) Shark Shark! - Eat fish smaller than you to help you grow and avoid the bigger fish to survive but look out for the shark

3) Frog Bog - A two player race to jump between lilly pads and catch the most flying bugs

4) B17 Bomber (works with the intellivoice add on) - fight off enemy fighters while you fly across europe to your bombing target Then open the bomb bay doors and destroy targets.

5) AD&D Cloudy Mountain - Search the mountain mazes to find arrows to defeat the monsters and dragons

6) AD&D Treasure of Tarmin - More of the same type of monster killing action

7) Mission X - Flying shoot em up

8) Pitfall (Activision) - hey.....it's pitfall. What more do you need?

9) Utopia - Imagine Sim City, Then imagine how it would have been in the Atari/intellivision era.

10) Burger time - Just like the classic arcade game, all in all not a bad conversion

11) Lock 'n' Chase - Another arcade conversion

12) Tron: deadly discs - Run around the arena flinging discs at your opponents but watch out for the controllers

13) Triple Action - three games for two player action. Tanks, Driving and Bi-planes

14) Frogger (Activision) - Frogger!

15) Tron: Maze-a-Tron - Run through an ever scrolling and direction changing maze to escape from the controllers.

Hope this has been of interest guys n girls. If anyone is interested I do have plenty of doubled games that I will happily consider trading and may even consider selling or trading one of the 3 Intellivision consoles I have.

It was much better than the 2600 version as the movement and 8 way fire were independent from each other. Brilliant fun in 2 player mode as well  :D

I just purchased an Intellivision II on Ebay with 14 games and I also ordered Donkey Kong Arcade.  I could not resist!  :)  I don't know much about Intellivision but I do know that it has some games that are unique to the system.

Commando is a pretty good conversion on the Intellivision.  Finding a complete cart with overlays gets expensive, though.

Better of sticking to the awesome 7800 version though  8)

Yes, the 7800 version is excellent, so I'm happy with just that one.  But the Intellivision one is still quite impressive.

I have an Intellivision and some games. Some of my favorites are Commando, Dig Dug, Loco-Motion, Pac Man, Q*Bert, Thin Ice and Turbo.
The new Donkey Kong looks good but I haven't bought one yet.

You should get the new D2K if you can.  It contains the first DK Arcade and the additional game as well.  So, one cart gets you the whole thing.

So maybe I'm ready for the new version. :D

I never had the "pleasure" of playing the original port but, believe me, this is a superb port that puts what Coleco did to shame.  I have yet to read any negative reviews of this new port anywhere.  This is DK as it should have been done on the Intellivision and the fact that it not only has all 4 screen but additional screens makes it one of the best ports to any home console, period.

I have been ready for a new version of DK. The Atari computer version is nice but way to fast and some of the other good ones
lack the fourth screen.

Do you own stock in this new homebrew game TrekMD? If not you should because you're a good spokesperson!

LOL No, I don't but I believe in supporting good developers!  Although, from stuff I've read, it seems as if the person who programmed this particular game may be leaving the scene.  A big loss to us.  I was hoping he'd do the same thing for the 2600!

Not quite sure but I think there is money involved.  This seemed to come out of the blue and surprised a lot of people.  I'm disappointed because he clearly knows what he's doing in programming for the Intellivision.

It would have to take some cash to get started. Maybe the payment choices limited buyers.

Hi all!

I'm still trolling the forums, so I'm slowly catching up with these old threads.

As some of you may know, I have an Intellivision (actually, I own three).

It is a very good system, but then again, I'm biased. :)

I'm very glad that RVG picked it up as a first class citizen of the retro-gaming community.

As for the best games for the console, I agree with the ones mentioned already. Some of my favourites as a kid were, in no particular order:

- B-17 Bomber
- BurgerTime
- Loco-Motion
- Utopia
- Astrosmash
- Star Strike
- Dracula
- Microsurgeon
- Atlantis
- Frog Bog
- Tennis
- Basketball

As an adult, I rediscovered Night Stalker, which is a very good maze game; and Thin Ice.  Neither of these I owned as a child.

    Cheers!

That's a good list of games.  Atlantis was particularly impressive to me (as I said on my review).  I haven't played some of the titles you listed (Loco-Motion, Utopia, Tennis, Frog Bog) but getting there!  I've had an Intellivsion for a relatively short time.  :)

Yes, Shark! Shark! Is very good.  However, in sea-related games, my preference (and I'm almost ashamed to admit this) is Sea Quest for Atari VCS.

I wish it were done for the Intellivision.

That is a fun game DZ. Activision really released some great games. I always wondered why the Intellivision got Happy Trails and the 2600 or Colecovision did not, there were enough key pads that one could have been made to work for the 2600 and of course the Coleco stick would have been fine.

It's all good, nothing wrong with reviving an interesting point like that.

The Intellivision definately did have a controller way ahead of its time, even if it didn't work that well.

I find that I like the disc but the issue is holding the controller.  It really could have used a better design from that perspective.

OMG I FOUND MY HOME!

Intellivision was my first console.. and basically my first video game love.  My dad was in the Navy so we were stationed in Africa when it came out.  We went to one of his friend's house who was having a pool party and I saw Space Battle.   I don't think I even touched the water that day.

I had to wait another year until we moved back to the States!  Fortunately my dad was hooked too and he picked one up soon after we got back.

I'm curious if there are any collectors here who have their Intellivision stuff on display, I'd love to see some pics.

That's cool!  Were you able to keep on playing the Inty at that friend's house while you waited to return to the States?  It must have been torture having to wait if you couldn't!

I have posted my pictures of my entire collection in here, including what I do have for Intellivision.  I own an Intellivision II as I prefer the smaller size and more modern design of the console.  I also like the fact that the controllers are removable.  :)

Here is the link to the thread with my pics:  TrekMD's Collection. (http://http)  I actually need to update some of the pics!

It was very rare we'd go over there, so maybe I got to play a couple of more times.  It was torture!

Thanks for the link!  OMG Your Vectrex collection is impressive!  I hadn't heard of the 3D glasses for it, I'll have to do some reading.

It's very cool to see you have an Intellivoice and its games, that was hot stuff back then.  An interesting piece of trivia (which you guys probably all know) is "Major League Baseball" spoke without the Intellivoice, it would say [insert robot voice here] "Yerrrrrrrrrr Out".  Marketing wasn't too happy about it because they didn't want to hurt the Intellivoice sales so no future games (afaik) were allowed to have speech.

Glad you like it!  That is indeed one great bit of trivia about Major League Baseball!  I did not know that.  Most of my carts now for the Intellivision are homebrew games since I have a CC3 with all the ROMs that are out there.  It just saves space!  LOL

The 3D Imager is not an easy thing to get for the Vectrex and it is a very cool device.  I play very carefully with mine as I don't want to run the risk of breaking it.

One of the advantage of the II is that you can change the controllers.  I thought I'd have a hard time with the discs, though, and I found myself adjusting to them sooner than I expected.

I have two sets of controllers.  The regular disc controllers and a set of modified controllers with a joystick that replaces the discs.  For certain games they work out better.

For anyone why might be interested, I found this on ebay...

Lost Games Guide for Intellivision (http://http)

The lost games guide is a monumental book (in word format) with all existing informations about all unreleased intellivision games.

Many misteries solved, 366 pages (and 350 MB) of interviews, photos, stuff, magazines, screenshots, prototypes, more than 300 never released games reviewed!

[align=center:3evpfskd](http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Lost-Games-guide-for-Intellivision-/21/!CDfGlNgCWk~$(KGrHqUOKp!E0Uc5hywYBNO)WlL4m!~~_12.JPG)[/align:3evpfskd]

Apparently this is a second edition, which has even more information than the original version. Doesn't seem overly costly. If anyone lives in Rome, you can go pick it up personally! ;)

Are these games that are actually past the design stage, ie started and on their way to release?

Nice pic TrapZZ! I've only seen my father playing the Nintendo handheld Manhole, the first electronic game I ever played. I still have it CIB and in great condition. :)

Regarding the Intellivision I founded a plug and play controller with 25 Intv games made by Play Vision, what a crappy device it is, low quality construction at its best!! I regret of paying about 8-9 (shipping included!) a couple of years ago..

Some games are fun, I particularly enjoyed Thunder Castle and Night Stalker but I wonder how they play on a real Intellivision as with this controller the gameplay is bad, specially Thunder Castle...

Thanks for checking out the pic!  I really miss those competitions.

I've found playing Intellivision games on other hardware just doesn't hold up.  Maybe it's just a nostalgia thing but I really like using the original controller for most of the games.

I admit, some of the games aren't suited for it; but many take advantage of it and do it well, NFL Football and Golf are good examples.

Me and my Pa used to play Golf. He used to get confused sometimes which direction he was aiming, I helped by laughing uncontrollably when the ball flew off in completely the wrong direction  :19:

In fact we played a few games in the old Intellivision together, he liked a bit of Sea Battle and Armor Battle too.

A lot of great games weren't in that video top 10.. such as Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Cloudy Mountain, The Dreadnaught Factor, Utopia, Tower Of Doom, TRON Deadly Discs, Triple Action (Biplanes), B-17 Bomber, Bomb Squad, D2K Arcade, Truckin', NHL Hockey, and many more.

That said, there are so many great games on the system that I would have a really tough time making my own top 10 list. Eventually we will probably try on the podcast, although I know that it will be very difficult to come to any sort consensus on the best games, since it's so subjective.
Title: Re: Any Intellivision owners?

Yes, coming up with top 10 is not easy and personal taste will, of course, change the lists.  I think he was going for commercial titles only on that list, though, so D2K Arcade could not be there.

Unless Coleco had spies at Mattel and Atari to know every nuance of these two systems, I say job well done Coleco. I will agree Coleco was trying to get these games out quickly to make money but look at Turbo on the Intellivision.  Turbo to me proves Coleco was trying to make better games.

This third party stuff was all new. Activision is probably the best example of the success but even Activision chose to make little improvements to different console versions.
Title: Re: Any Intellivision owners?

They likely reversed engineered the hardware to be able to make the games.  I think the reality is that they wanted to get the games out as quickly as possible to "cash in."

I don't own an Intellivision, but I have played some of the games over the years. I don't see Astrosmash in your pictures, that's a must own if you ask me :113:

I prefer the Intellivision version of Stampede. Loco-Motion and Pac-Man are also decent games. I am biased but BurgerTime is a must own.

Another one is the Ms. Pac-Man homebrew release.  It is plain amazing.

That's the best place for them!  <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif" alt=":D" title="Cheesy" />
Never liked those 8-way discs.

Actually, they are 16 way discs!

So, what do new generations think of the Intellivision?  Check out this video of a kid reviewing the Intellivision II console...

I guess having a kid review the Intellivision didn't draw much interest.  How about this video from the Top Hat Gaming Man about the Intellivision?

It's been a while since we've had posts about the Intellivision.  Here is a recent video looking at the system...

Video brings up a good point about Sears and Radio Shack systems.  Unthinkable now for Sears to make a version of the Playstation 4 or Xbox One but in the early 1980's it was common practice.

Yeah, can you imagine the Sears Super Duper Video Game Console (their branded PS4)?!

Just watched this video looking at the artwork of Intellivision boxes.  Atari always had great box art, and Mattel must have decided to do the same thing.  Have a look...

Happy 40th Anniversary, Intellivision!  This original never-before-seen Intellivision promotional video from 1978 has never been released to the general public.  Intellivision Productions pulled it out of their archives to share with everyone on they system's 40th Anniversary.  This was filmed a year before the official launch and there are some images and information in the video that are different from what ended up coming out.  Can you pick them all out?
