Title: Evolution of Retro Basketball Games
Post by: TrekMD on January 31, 2013, 17:11:13 PM
Continuing the chain of "Evolution of" threads, let's take a look at one more sport:  Basketball.  Let's get started by looking at three basketball versions on the Atari 2600, all from Atari.

I really like Double Dunk, I used to play it loads when I was a kid!

Remarkable to see how much the same sport games changed so much on the 2600!

Here is one I had not even considered!  Basketball on the Odyssey 2!  It actually has two games in one (Bowling/Basketball) so you'll need to advance to 1:15 to get to the basketball game.  :)

Indeed, there is a massive jump from Basketball to Double Dunk.

I always remember Basketball from Airplane! where Kareem Abdul Jabbar is playing it on the radar screen!

I've never taken the time to play Double Dunk.  I do have the ROM, so I should just pop it on the Harmony Cart and try it out.  :)

Those two are quite different from each other.  One tries to be realistic and the other takes an "animated" approach.  Kinda cool.

Though never released, a working prototype file of RealSports Basketball for the 5200 does exist.  Here is an image of the game:

[align=center:1tjm68dz](http://www.vgmuseum.com/images/5200/RealSportsBasketball-03.png)[/align:1tjm68dz]

There was also a second version of the game that was developed but it was abandoned in favor of the version above.

Street Sports Basketball was the 2nd in Epyx's Street Sports series, 1st being Baseball.

got a 7/10 on C64 in C.U, but reviewer mentions the coder (Andrew Spencer) was responsible for International Basketball on C64, so all he'd basically done was tweaked the original and improved the graphics and also that Int.Basketball, released 3 years earlier, was not only better, but cheaper £5.99 when released, compared to this retailing at £9.99.

Although pixelated, I really love the 16-bit basketball games that used mode 7 panning and zooming effects. SNES NCAA Basketball and Genesis/Mega Drive Dick Vitale's Awesome Baby College Hoops are two nice examples. I know genesis/Mega Drive did not have mode 7 per se, but the Dick Vitale game sure looks like it to me.

Also, does anyone remember the overly-used slamming close-up flash screens used on some 8 and 16 bit basketball games? It always struck me as ironic that the muscular jocks shown slamming the ball through the hoop looked nothing like the pudgy team player sprites used throughout the rest of the games.

Those mid-90's NBA Live games on the SNES and Genesis bring back good memories. Many hours sent playing those against my son. The isometric perspective on them always seemed so natural compared to the perspectives of other NBA titles of that time. I do remember that at times it seemed like the players in those games were skating on a sheet of ice. They would 'slide' off the end of the court if you weren't careful and kept the d-pad pressed down for a split second too long.

Those are all nice looking games.  I miss those days, when more then one or two basketball games were available.

I have the Looney Tunes Space jam for the Saturn. I like it. The Sony fans will probably say it was better on the Playstation.
