Title: Evolution of Retro Tennis Games
Post by: TrekMD on January 16, 2013, 00:02:57 AM
Continuing the "Evolution of" we are now going to take a look at another sport:  Tennis!

Let's get started with two classic versions:  Activision's Tennis for the Atari 2600 and Atari's own RealSports Tennis!

Realsports Tennis is one of the few times Atari bettered an Activision game, usually it was the other way round!

They absolutely did!  As you say, one of the few times this happened!  Better graphics, multicolored sprites, a real "net," a scoreboard that allows the player to enter their name.  They pull no punches making that one!

I bought most of my Atari 2600 Real Sport games in the last few years. Picked them up cheap and have not played any except football. The Real Sport Tennis really looks good. Always fell into the Activision is best frame of mind.

In this instance, the Atari version bests that from Activision.  :)  You should try it out.

I like tennis games and it is sorta cool after all these years to find a good one I missed. At least in a suckish kind of way that I missed out playing Real Sports Tennis for the last Twenty-five plus years.

I'll probably be banned from the site, I have not had much Atari love as of late besides the Lynx. Same for the Colecovision.  I have been playing the Intellivision, Lynx, PSP and Saturn.

You're OK since you do have the Lynx in there.   :P

RealSports Tennis for the Atari 8-bit computers looks like a step back compared to the 2600.

It seems that way, doesn't it?  I wonder why it was programmed that way.  Of course, the 5200 version is the same as the 8-bit version:

Mario Tennis on Virtual Boy.

C+VG Red Dot rating of 81%.

Blimey with this and the last boxing post by moi, never thought i'd be mentoining Nintendo formats, let alone the VB.

Still forum could do with a tad more obscure Nintendo format coverage.

My favourite tennis game ever is Super Tennis. Absolutely fantastic and the sheer range of shot placement still hasn't been bettered.

I do have to make a current gen mention for anyone that loves tennis and that is Grand Slam Tennis 2. The first was a motion plus Wii game which I have yet to try but the second a PS3/360 game which is simply amazing. It has an amazing range of shot and a truly wonderful control system that uses only the two analogue sticks. You can configure to a classic style too but the feel of the twin stick control is superior.

Good shout with Super Tennis Naka. You've just named the second best tennis game ever made. Final match tennis is the god of all tennis games, their evolution peaked with this title. Tennis games have been slowly devolving ever since.

Post by: nakamura on February 11, 2013, 09:41:35 AM
Final Match Tennis is fantastic but Super Tennis is a better game. It simply has more range of shots but both are very similar. They actually play and look remarkably similar. Wouldn't be surprised to see if they were secretly coded together!

There is a Super NES version of Final Match called Super Final Match Tennis, strangely. It actually looks again fantastic.

Either way , I had months of entertainment out of both titles. Both superb, but FMT edged it for me, as I found it that little bit harder to master. Eventually, you could pull off some serious shots with practice. On the highest skill level it was a real challenge just to win a point, but never felt unfair. As with all tennis games though 2 player was where the real fun was.

Smash Tennis on the SNES is the business - 1ups the mighty Super Tennis in the pure fun stakes because of the variety of courts but mainly because it supports the multi-tap. Super Tennis has better and richer control  - it was an early release so only supports up to 2 players.

Smash Tennis is indeed a lot of fun but it does lack the control and depth of Super and other tennis games as you said.

Here's Davis cup Tennis on the MD. Another cracking effort, it's really playable once you get the hang of it, but can be frustrating until you do. Being able to argue with the umpire is a great little touch too.

Looks terrible! Horrible and juddery animation is no good for a sports game. View is rather low too. The grunting players are superb though!

That's a lot of Sega Tennis games.  I think it is fascinating to see in how many different ways the same sport can be rendered even within the same system.

No buddy. It just doesn't look like it is a match made in heaven for such a sports game.

That's the thing, it's a great game but you have to work at it. As for the viewing angle, it all becomes second nature after a while. It's well worth a try if you like your tennis games.

Thanks! The only one I knew of was Super Tennis which is no Great Tennis. Sega never released a Great Tennis, so I have to be happy with Super Tennis.

I wonder why the difference in name?  Something cultural or just a language thing?

No idea because there is a series of "Great" sports games for the SMS so the name change seems strange.

Hmm, odd.  Who knows that they were thinking about when they made the decision.

After seeing those great looking tennis games that were not released in the States. Sega must have been laughing at how they shafted the American gamers. :(

Blame Tonka not Sega, they did a terrible job marketing the SMS in North America. In the UK and France it was distributed and marketed by Virgin Mastertronic who did a fantastic job with the machine. In fact so good that Sega bought them out and renamed them Sega Europe!
