A thread for all things Nintendo 64. I no longer own one as I foolishly sold a mint JP machine with 50 games. However I have been playing Wave Race recently via the Wii and it is still fantastic.
What are your favourite games?
I didn't get an N64 until waaaay after they were commercially active - about 4 or 5 years ago, I think. It will be hard for some of you proper gamers to imagine, but I wasn't actually even aware of the existence of the N64 - I spent much of my time in the late 90s playing Colonization to death on my Amiga 1200. Yes, late 90s - I didn't even get a PC until 1997.
I remember spending quite a long time trotting around in Donkey Kong 64 - I thought it was quite good fun, really. I liked being able to wander around aimlessly. But the game I enjoyed most of all was Conker's Bad Fur Day.
I think I have about 40-odd cartridges that I've collected for the machine, many of which I have hardly played. Disgraceful, isn't it?
Myself and 3 friends at the time all bought used N64's just for Perfect Dark, we were hooked by that game, even though system struggled to cope with it's demands, frame rate wise.
Once the novelty of P.Dark wore off (and i soon tired of the HD remake on 360), i picked up a good few N64 games:Lylat Wars took me a while to get into, but was fantastic, Doom was decent enough, but picture was too damn dark, loved Quake 2, Banjo-K, could'nt get on with Jet Force Gem (still have my copy), Body Harvest or Command And Conq. on N64 (awful controls with that damn ang.stick), Mario 64 (not my thing at all), Goldeneye was good, but man hard on the eyes with that A.A, always looked like picture was out of focus and wandering aimlessly around the artic level got very tiresome, 50 shades of white!.
Turok 2 i hated, felt so like a tech.demo, but i did get into Rage Wars
Couple games i always wanted to try were Hybrid Heaven and more so Battlezone (loved the 2 PC games by pandemic) were they any good?.
Couple of other N64 games i got to play on DC (not sure if this counts) Rayman 2-Gorgeous and joy to play and Shadowman, aimless wandering galore, might have been huge game, but man was it dull.
The N64 was the first console I bought in 1998 when I was 13. It's the only time I've owned a console when it was still "current".
I somehow managed to sidestep the whole PS1 thing as I wasn't as console gamer beforehand. I got an N64 because I just happened to have friends who all had one. The first time I played it I was rather bemused by it. The controller was very alien to me and I didn't "get" it for a long time. But the multiplayer aspect of it in particular really captured me. After I got one it wasn't long before I was making people quit Goldeneye matches.
Some of my favourites would be: Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, F-Zero X, Turok: Rage Wars, 1080 Snowboarding, Space Station Silicon Valley, Rogue Squadron, Snowboard Kids, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time.
I'm mentioned in issue 40 of "64 magazine" (//http). I have a few videos uploaded too, like....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln9gG76rgIQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln9gG76rgIQ)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujq9PQgQtGA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujq9PQgQtGA)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lSqipU8NX0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lSqipU8NX0)
I think that covers everything.
I bought an N64 off ebay a few years ago - the translucent 'Jungle green' DK64 one.
Despite having bought most of the supposed 'classics' to play on it I can't escape the conclusion it was/is a truly woeful games console with an appalling controller. Ninty really dropped the ball with the N64.
There are a couple of games I enjoy playing on it though which is why I've kept hold of it. The main one being Robotron 64.
The machine was certainly riddled with poor choices. They should never have forsaken a CD drive for a start, that cost them Squaresoft and real EA support, like or hate them, big hitters help a machine. No RGB support as standard was utterly stupid also given the machines fairly muddy output.
Looking back on the N64, it gave hours of multiplayer fun with some ace single player games too. Goldeneye is such a stone cold classic and I have really been craving it lately. Probably won't be like old times though.
Been playing a little Doom 64 too and that is ace. Super smooth and visually still very nice. Love F-Zero and need to unlock that X cup again.
Pretty cool Vyo! I like the Crusi'n games. Steering wheel works well with those games. Cruis'n the World is my favorite. Other favorites are Diddy Kong Racing, Excitebike 64, Mario Kart, Micro Mchines, Midway Greatest Hits, Namco Museum, NASCAR '99, Pokemon Stadium I & II, Scooby Doo, SpiderMan, Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo & Rogue Squadron, Tony Hawk Pro Skater II and the WCW/WWF games are good.
I was disappointed with Batman Beyond, Road Rash and Transformers: Beast Wars.
I found the N64 through emulation, and picked up a console because I liked the games I'd been playing. My favourites ar Waverace64 which is just great fun for a quick blast to while away some time, MarioKart64 again good fun and SuperMario64. Like most though I still don't "get" the controller.
I got the controller - it's been bettered of course since but I still find it perfectly serviceable. Given the pathetic attempt Sony made of a controller at the start (remember version 1 had no analogue sticks) I think people do the N64 controller a disservice when they slag it off.
Mario 64 was/is great and can't see how it or Zelda OOT could have been done as well if they hadn't been cartridge based - the media at the time just wouldn't have been up to it - the seamless transition that cartridge loading gives you made those games.
F-Zero X is a favourite - I dodged Waverace as I read the PAL version is abysmal. Mario Kart was a bit of let down for me - but I've since seen it as a pretty good multi-player game - a lonely experience in 1 player though.
I had a lot fun with the console and some games still look pretty good provided you don't use composite hook up. Rayman 2, Virtual Pool64, Doom64 and Res Evil 2 still look excellent today as far as I'm concerned.
Mischief Makers, Mystical Ninja 2, Mario Tennis, Pokemon Puzzle League, 1080, Wetrix, Banjo Kazooie - all great stuff still well worth a look.
It was four player out of the box too - Bust-a-move 3 and New Tetris takes full advantage of that (great Neil Voss tunes in New Tetris) - as does Mario Tennis and plenty of others.
Lot of junk for it too and I'm glad I never paid full price for any turkeys. The blurry graphics mean its aged pretty badly but use RGB or s-video and it clears up quite a bit and the better games have aged quite well.
A few real odd-ball games to look out for too - Pokemon Snap, Fighters Destiny, Spacestation Siicon Valley and Blast Corps all have something a bit different though some look a bit rough now.
The zero loading meant games like Worms Armageddon played a lot better on it too.
My 'beef' with the controller i've explained in the earlier post i made, but then if i tried playing PS1 Alien Res.with the dual shock pad, i'd hate it as it so needs the PS mouse (and i so wish it had come to DC with keyboard and mouse support). Even know with PS3 pads, Sony's sticks still have issues with the dead zone, so really hoping PS4 does away with the dual shock design or at least over hauls it to point where the flaws are adressed.
Huge Rayman 2 fan, but own/only played the DC version, did hear N64 version was gorgeous though.
Weetrix? i was going to try on DC (Weetrix+) but ended up buying Aqua Aqua as it's known on PS2, there the PS2 controller ruins game for myself, found myself fighting with controls, very frustrating when your in a rush to place items.Hope the controls on N64 version work better.
Zero loading? indeed things like Resident Evil 0 started off on N64, designed with 2 character swaps in mind thanks to no loading times, but it and Eternal Darkness switched to Gamecube development as N64 fortunes faded.
I purchased the N64 on the day it was released. I loved it, one of the best consoles ever for me purely for Goldeneye.. The best Bond game every imho...
I also got an N64 just because I wanted to play Goldeneye. I was not disappointed and it was all up hill from there.
Was thinking about Goldeneye this morning. It really was and remains a superb game. Little things like the opening with the spinning logo into the 007 theme.
The guns and levels are just awesome. Love the fact you can shoot body parts and enemies react suitably.
pics of my N64 games - why not? Not quite up to date. Sold a couple of these privately to a PAL collector (Rat Attack, Lode runner 64 and the Waiailae Golf if I remember right - no great loss) I have a few others missing from these pics - Mario Party 2 and a few others.

I also foolishly sold my original 64 to buy GC software. Had about 25 games with highlights including Mario 64, Goldeneye, Zelda OOT, Zelda MM, Mystical Ninja, Banjo Kazooie and Silicon Valley.
I got my 64 back in 2000 or so, back when Donkey Kong 64 was the new thing and they were selling it in 'Jungle Green'. I honestly thought it was pretty impressive for the time, given how huge they made the levels. The game, however? It... eh, hasn't aged well. I'm a total sucker for 3D platformers, but a game where you basically have to do every level 5 times? No thanks.
Of course, I had plenty of other games, too. The Quake port was surprisingly good, minus a few levels, and Quake 2 was an entirely different game. Then there was Paper Mario, and while I never could finish it, I would honestly rank it as one of the very few JRPGs I've truly enjoyed. The controller was weird, I'll admit, but when you're playing something like Killer Instinct Gold with it, it turns out it works surprisingly well for fighting games.
And of course, there's all the stuff everybody with a 64 played, like Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Super Smash Brothers... man, I really need to build up my 64 collection again.
Can any of you gamers recommend a couple of good 2 player games to play on the N64 with my 10 year old daughter?
Diddy Kong Racing, Snowboard Kids, Mario Party...
Played the first Mario Party for hours with friends. So much fun.

Diddy Kong Racing or Mario Kart 64
One of the Mario Party games
Mario Tennis - you can play as a 2 player team against the CPU in doubles mode
Not two player but take a look at Yoshi's Story and Pokemon Snap - you will have great fun with these just taking turns.
Just brought an N64 off eBay, i had one when it first came out and i always regret selling it for beer money at the time. Was probably my fave nintendo console, looking forward to hooking it up again and playing the likes of Goldeneye, Zelda, Mario64, F-Zero and Banjo Kazooie.Â
I hope it was good beer Minerals?
RGB mod it Minerals! I did link Laird to the site that shows how it's done.
I have an RGB modded N64 and still not happy with the video quality. Not sure that it's worth the expense/effort. It's slightly better than s-video, but still looks very grainy to me.
N64 and games have arrived

Very nice!Â
Wave Race and F-Zero Z are worth owning the console for. Amazing.
from CVG UK:
April 1997 - N64 Magazine: The Video
When the SNES died out, it was only natural that Future Publishing's much-loved SNES magazine Super Play would have to end too. After shutting up shop for a couple of months it returned in April 1997 as N64 Magazine, a shiny new publication dedicated to Nintendo's brand new system, the Nintendo 64.
Issue one of N64 Magazine came with a free VHS tape, imaginatively titled N64: The Video. This half-hour tape came in three parts. The first showed Nintendo's entire promotional video from the latest Shoshinkai show (complete with lots of early footage of what was then Zelda 64, as well as brief glimpses of cancelled N64 games like Kirby's Air Ride and Mother 3)
For the second part of the video, armed with their US N64 and a video recorder, the N64 Magazine staff captured longer gameplay footage from some of the Nintendo 64 launch period games, including Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64 and, um, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. Finally, the video ends with trailers for the Mission Impossible movie and Turok Dinosaur Hunter. Not bad for a freebie.
N64 Magazine continued to evolve as Nintendo did, eventually becoming NGC Magazine with the launch of the GameCube, then NGamer with the launch of the Wii and finally a brief stint as Nintendo Gamer before finally closing down for good on its 20th birthday. Sleep well, sweet prince.

Minerals, are you sure that you and Laird are related?????
Thanks for the video!!!!!
They sure are. Laird just needs a bit of work to forget the politics of gaming and just enjoy the games. I've been working on that for about a year!

from my time as an N64 owner-Controller was ok once you got used to it, for things like:
Quake, Turok 2, Doom, Starfox, Blast Corps, Body Harvest, Banjo-K, Jet force Gem, Mario 64, but put it with something like Command and Conquer on N64 and you've an unplayable game.
I've a love/hate realationship with Nintendo hardware, nothing political, just in cases of systems i own like:GB+GBA, the screen issues render games unplayable (so i've always played the GBA stuff on the Micro and/or the GB Player for GC).
The SNES? whilst a technically better piece of hardware in areas of colours+sound than the MD, i've never felt was the leap it was proclaimed to be, been more than enough examples of MD clever programming replicating Mode 7 etc and SNES Mode 7 was'nt really all that, SNES games that really made use of it seemed to need an extra DSP to really pull it off and the MCD did scrolling in 2-Axis rather than SNES Mode 7's single axis (plus MCD enabled texture mapping), so whilst the MD had a fair crop of add-ons to prolong it's shelf life in terms of MCD, then 32X, SNES seemed to rely on DSP chips in carts to compensate for slow CPU, even before Argonaught looked at the SFX chip for 3D.
But no, as an N64 owner, i really enjoyed Goldeneye (once my eyes adjusted), Quake, Perfect dark, took me a while to get into Starfox, but it had me hooked, i treated it much like i did the Saturn, pick it up cheap, track down the exclusives and see what 'gels'.
Was always a bloody nightmare trying to find used games in good condition, let alone boxed+with instructions mind.
I've still the Big Box Starfox here along with few other N64 games, know i've still got Jet Force, anyone after them?

Hybrid Heaven was a very unusual game. I remember sinking hours into it then just stopping one day. I will have to check it out again as I remember so little about it!
Just took delivery of a Japanese N64. I've been putting this off for some time. The plan is to upgrade those PAL games that got butchered in PAL (M64, MK64, Pilotwings, Waverace64) and others that got some PAL optimisation but are still slower and it is significant (e.g. F Zero X).
The US and JPN machines are not region locked - it's just a physical limitation utilising tabs in the cart slot and casing - but my console came with a bridge adaptor that gets over these measures (it came with the US version of Rogue Squadron - not my thing but proves it works) so I'll be getting US versions in the main to avoid language diffs but will also be looking for those interesting (to me) JPN only titles like Sin & Punishment and Tetris 64 (with heart rate monitor!!)
Got Waverace 64 boxed (JPN version) too as I've never played it before. Always avoided the PAL version as it is reported to be a very poor port. It can look a bit rough in places (especially on an LCD panel - my CRT won't display in colour via s-video which is what the N64 pushes out unmodded which is a pity) but it plays extremely well. Very enjoyable game.

I quite like it actually, its kinda like a futuristic Resident Evil. But im not much of a fan of the turn based fightingÂ
Sorry to dig up an old thread, however....
I picked up an N64 last week (was £10 with a PS2) and came with Goldeneye, Shadowman, Zelda OOT, a football game , Perfect Dark(all boxed) two controllers, rumble pack. No PSU though.
I've raided ebay and added, Lylat Wars, Waveracer 64, Rogue Squardron and F Zero X
Thoughts??? Am I going the right way here?
Plus, anywhere I can get N64 games? Ebay is a bit hit and miss and I'm after a few titles (Beetle Adventure Racing is one)
We have a thread listing several online retro stores. I haven't specifically looked for N64 games but there may be some that do have games for the system: http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=38620#p38620 (//http) . I believe the last one I posted sells for all systems.
Nice find!Â

Not sure where you live mate but the retro shop in Dunstable where I live has tons of N64 games, they are nearly all boxed too. I coukd always grab any he has for you if you want too. His prices are less than ebay and he gives RVG members a discount! Look in the store directory for Games Monkey.
I was at work when I posted that and so just add a bit more, the link for his shop is here - http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/index.php?page=gamezmonkey (//http)
If you give him a ring he would be able to tell you what he had and would take paypal payments and post games to you if you wanted. Just tell him you are a friend of Kieren.

Thanks for this mate, appreciated. I know where this place is, I live in Aylesbury and regularly in Tring - by the bit where the A5 crosses and used to be a godawful rounadbout!
I may well give him a call - some of the prices on Ebay are silly.
PSU came yesterday - Waverace 64 is fantastic.... quite impressed with the N64 so far.
Also need a Gamecube controller.....
I have a love hate relationship with the N64! I love some of the games which are some of the best of their generation, but hate the low resolution, blurry textures and eye watering visuals on some games!
But my top 10 would have to be
Waverace 64
Goldeneye
Super Mario 64
Pilotwings 64
Perfect Dark
Blastcorps
Super Smash Bros
1080
Mario Kart 64
Banjo Kazooie
I have a love/hate relationship with the N64 too:
Love:
Robotron 64 (prefer it to Robotron X on PS)
F-Zero X (decent sequel to F-Zero and Powerdrome/STUN Runner clone)
Sin & Punishment (own it on Wii VC)
Tetrisphere (partly for its Atari Jag origins as Phear)
Hate:
Everything else!
If we're listing off interesting games, I've got mine right here.
Mace: The Dark Age (//http) - One of Atari Games's two fighting games they actually released. It's basically a cross between Mortal Kombat and Soul Edge/Soul Blade, with a little Street Fighter in there, too. Kicks the crap out of Mortal Kombat 4 any day.
Doom 64 (//http) - You know those people who keep saying Doom 3 is the third Doom game? They're lying. This is the REAL Doom 3, hiding under an assumed name. The gameplay's mostly similar as the first two games, with new graphics, a new, more atmospheric soundtrack, and a new weapon, too. Sure, the ports to the PC might be preferred, but this is still pretty great either way.
Rocket: Robot On Wheels (//http) - OK, sure, a 3D platformer on the N64 is nothing new. But this one's pretty well done. For one thing, there's a lot of focus on puzzle solving, and the game even has its own physics engine. Sure, there's still a lot of collecting involved, but there's a lot more thought to it. Like, say, cheating at a game of tic-tac-toe with a robotic chicken.
Nintendo 64 - Did You Know Gaming? Feat. Brutalmoose (//http)[/align:yjjmvyc6]
That was an interesting online experiment Nintendo did back then.
Picked up a CIB copy of Sin & Punishment recently - lovely game. I have the VC version too but couldn't get on with the controls - feels a lot better using the N64 controller.
My sister was here the other day so we played a few games of Perfect Dark.
My rank changed for the first time in over 10 years.
(http://www.diffusedion.co.uk/images/PDRank-s2.jpg) (//http)
I'll probably be stuck on Lethal for another 10 years at least though.
Just recently a prototype Nintendo 64 cartridge containing the PAL version of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine made its way onto eBay, selling for a massive $710. Luckily enough for us though, the new owner of this cartridge was kind enough to reach out to one of the Nintendo 64 scene groups with the aim of sharing this long lost PAL release with the community. Although the PAL version doesn't offer many differences from its US counterpart, it's nice that another piece of gaming history has been archived.
Nintendo 64. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. Level 1 - Canyonlands (//http)[/align:1ybef7gd]
That's pretty cool. Good that the person who won the bid was interested in sharing.Â
There are a few N64 games that I really enjoy, which are usually written off as "kiddie" games. The first two would be Legend of the Mystical Ninja and Goemon's Great Adventure. These are sequels to the SNES Goemon, but the first is a 3d platformer, while the 2nd goes back to its SNES roots. Aside from the gameplay, they're really funny (in a weird sort of way). Let's Play Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon - #1. Goemon and the Giant Peach Ship (//http) Goemon's Great Adventure Playthrough Part 1 (//http)
I also thought the two Snowboard Kids games were underrated arcade style racers. Snowboard Kids (N64) Gameplay (//http)
And of course, Mischief Makers was another great Treasure game. Mischief Makers - 100% Playthrough (1/5) (//http)
You can see why Nintendo really went off into getting that "kid's console" stigma when some of the best titles looked like that, though.
Snowboard Kids and Mischief Makers are ace. I actually prefer Snowboard Kids to Mario Kart 64. Haven't played Mystical Ninja yet.
Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine though, is one that goes on my "boring" list.
http://youtu.be/rL2XPPVcI8A
For a console that lacked extensive third-part support, the Nintendo 64 managed to produce some great titles. The technical limitations of the cartridge really prevented N64 games from matching the cinematic quality of PlayStation games. But since everything was accessed from the cartridge, loading times were fast and it was not uncommon for games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time to have vast overworlds drawn and rendered in just a few seconds. Texture filtering also greatly improved the visuals of the games; it really helped that Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars, for instance, was not a pixelated, blocky mess, but looked and ran smooth.
Anyone unhappy with their n64 picture on Modern tv's should try a composite/Svideo to hdmi converter. I took a risk and got a lenkeng 323a converter off eBay for 40 and it's great. No more blurry text or blotchy colours, just a pin sharp image. Shall be running my dreamcast through it as well when I get a composite cable.
It's been a long while since anything got posted on this thread but I figured I'd wake up the thread with a video of 10 Best N64 Games. Check it out. What do you think?

I don't have an N64, but for collectors of the system this should be a cool video...

Great video!! I enjoy the stickers on my sealed games. Little off topic but still Nintendo related. I enjoy collecting used NES games with rental stickers.
Memories of a time when you could rent an NES game from your local grocery store or pharmacy.
Hey ice! Good to see you back! I never rented games but I can see how cool it would be today to have some of those used games with the stickers on them. :)
Hey! Thanks!
I might be the only who appreciates it so hopefully no one tries selling used Super Mario/Duck Hunt with rental stickers for big money. lol
The N64 has a fair amount of exclusive rental games that either the sticker was accepted or you destroyed the cart trying to remove it.
LOL Aggressive sticketing?
I remember being able to rent snes games in the uk, would be a great business if someone set up a rental place like that now I'm sure
John Hancock just posted a video looking at overlooked N64 games to revisit. Have a watch...

Wetrix is a magnificent game. Well worth going back to. It got an "update" on PS2 but I didn't like it as it sullied the purity of the original. The Dreamcast got a port too which was a straight graphical update - but it lost the great soundtrack. Still a nice version though I prefer the original.
Here's a lark - me making a mess of F-Zero X Queen Cup.
I uploaded this because some of the deaths are amusing (to me at any rate)

Stone cold classic game this. Nintendo at their finest here. The control scheme is surprisingly deep yet accessible for beginners.

Lovely additions mate
Have snagged a cart only copy of US version of Tetrisphere. I have the PAL version in really nice condition with manual and box. Japan didn't get this game so I don't see the point in paying for iffy US box art.
Very fond of Tetrisphere - it can really get its claws into me. Nothing like Tetris of course but it's a very satisfying game.
This arrived today.... Treasure's Bangai O for N64.
Dear me this is wonderful. I have this for Dreamcast but have been after this for a while. Funded by several game sales!!! Plays brilliantly...It has deeper gameplay. The powerup system was stripped down for Dreamcast.

Latest N64 acquisition. JP version of Lode Runner 64. I used to have this on PAL but sold it. The PAL port was ugly due to the squashed graphics but played well so I always wanted to play it uncompromised. Had to get the JP version of course for that lovely packaging. Import friendly too as the menus are in English.
Looks better full screen and of course remember the N64 is a CRT era console so the graphics are best viewed on a screen with scanlines as they are designed that way. :)
