As many will know I adore the Super Nintendo ( I also really like the MD!), so I thought it was time to talk games.
I have a pretty decent collection and I still play my machine often. I am currently playing Final Fantasy 3 with the aim to actually finish it this time.
What are you playing? What do you like?
Another console that I acquired during my "let's live an alternate childhood" phase that I had a few years ago - the reality being that I was an Amiga owner with little awareness of console gaming.
The only game I have spent a major amount of time on is Super Metroid. Having played the Turrican games absolutely to death on the C64 and Amiga I took to Super Metroid immediately and ultimately I think it's the better game. I didn't complete it though - I vaguely remember getting to a room that fills up with lava or perhaps acid or something, managing to get out the other side by the skin of my teeth. I'm not sure of the exact circumstances after that but I didn't get much further. Shame really, as I thought it was one of the best games I've ever played.
As for the rest - well, I know the SNES is not regarded as the machine for shooters but I really do like Super Aleste. Demon's Crest is another really good game, with beautifully coloured backdrops and a fantastic soundtrack. Equinox deserves a mention I think - I usually don't have the patience for 3D isometric games, but this one kept me going for a while - and that soundtrack! Tim Follin at his absolute best.
EDIT: I had a nagging feeling that Tim's brother Geoff was also involved in the composition of Equinox's soundtrack. A quick trip to Wikipedia tells me that this is the case.
Picked up my SNES long after i was a MD owner, just for the exclusives.
Loved Mr Do Run, Choplifter 3, Alien 3 (so atmospheric, lot more depth to it than the MD game), Lawnmower Man+Plok (both just for the music), Batman Returns, Super Contra and a few others.
But, i did'nt take to the Nintendo exclusives like Super Metroid or F-Zero, as they are not my bag (as far as Metroid goes, more of a Turrican/Shadow Complex person), Starfox was ok, but i was an ST owner so poured hours into things like Starglider 1+2, Midwinter 1+2 etc so was used to 3D gaming.
Think i was far more impressed by what clever programming got out of the MD than anything i played on SNES, yep sound chip was lot better, games more colourful etc, but nothing made me feel i should have gotten a SNES far sooner, if that make's sense?.Very much enjoyed my SNES ownership, but don't return to it (via emulation) way i do the MD.
All boils down to personal tastes.
I got my SNES in May 2011. It's been a lot of fun catching up on some of more obvious classics like Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Link to the Past......and stuff like Aero the Acro-Bat 2, ActRaiser, Aladdin, Hagane, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, Soul Blazer, Super Star Wars.
There've been some real gaming highlights for me. Playing Super Mario World after waiting so many years was great.
Apparently the SNES was 2nd highest on my games completed list for last year with 19Â
I downloaded Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart off Wii's VC some time ago and bought an official SNES pad plus GameCube/Wii converter on US import to use it.
I can't say there's much else in the SNES games library that appeals to me. For instance, I've no interest in buying F-Zero when I have the GBA version which is pretty much the same thing. No need to get the mediocre conversion of Final Fight when I have Final Fight One on GBA and the superior Final Fight CD on Mega-CD. Street Fighter II? No thanks. Games such as Starfox and Pilotwings have aged terribly so I've no wish to suffer those either.
A massively overrated games console with a handful of very good games plus a load of RPGs which I couldn't care less about.
Super Mario World 2 could be worth a shot DCRip, if you enjoyed the first. Final Fight is certainly a poor conversion, bit more time and an extra 4mb could have easily made it truer to the arcade. Batman Returns is on the machine and it is a far better game than Final Fight ever was though, so it matters not to me.
Sounds like you have had a great 2012 with SNES gamign Vyo. SMW has indeed aged superbly and still is a joy to play today.
Havantgotaclue, have you tried Contra? Pretty much like Turrican only a lot less mindless wandering and better boss battles.
I've got Contra 3, yes. It's impressive but as is often the case when collecting old games, I haven't put the time into it that I would have done back in the day. It looks as though it would be worth persevering with though.
I forgot to mention the two Super Turrican games, as well. I think the second one in particular is very impressive. They're much less exploration-focused than the Amiga games, but very playable and well presented.
Quote from: "nakamura"Super Mario World 2 could be worth a shot DCRip, if you enjoyed the first.
That was the Yoshi's Island game with graphics like they were drawn by a five year old to be played by five year olds. Pass!
Super Turrican 2 is pretty impressive. I do prefer the needless wandering of the console versions though i hammered the Amiga games in the day.
Yoshi looks stunning. Just your fault you are a Meldrew!

I never 'clicked' with the
Turrican series (2D) for some reason. It's why I didn't buy that recent homebrew release on DC due to it being a
Turrican clone.
Indeed! Mature gamers don't like kiddie things, lol!
Loved Turrican 1+2, not so much 3 or Mega Tuurican.Would have loved to have seen how Thornado turned out on N64 (Turrican in 3D).
As for SNES RPG's?, took to them even less than i did MD ones.Coming from ST to MD etc, where i'd been born and raised on Dungeon Master, Captive, Bloodwych etc, found likes of Zelda, Snatcher (ok, MCD), Shining Force, Story Of Thor etc bloody slow and over rated.
Only stuck with and completed a MD Phantasy Star (would it have been 3? 4?).
How can something that millions of people love be overrated?
You are confusing game types you don't like with games you don't like.
When I was younger I had a friend with a SNES and we swapped consoles for 2 weeks (he got my MD)
The game I played the most was Magic Sword by Capcom, for some reason I just loved it.

Forgot about F-Zero. Really like that too. Here's my best time for Mute City:

I'm closing the internet.Â

Anyway, back on topic please.
My Snes is currently in a box awaiting use in the future. I want to get Donkey Kong Country for it though when it is set up again, I loved that game.

Yep, no problem. I posted about the games I enjoy playing and then couldn't resist having a little fun in response to the open goal naka' had presented!

Quote from: "dougtitchmarsh"... Donkey Kong Country
Ah yes, I downloaded that one via Wii's VC too. I had the GB version back in the day and wanted to experience the original home console version too all these years later. Not bad at all and I do 'get' what I recall Shigsy's criticism of the game was too. As I recall it, he damned the game with faint praise in complimenting the technical achievement of the visuals while commenting on its limited gameplay.
Donkey Kong Country is certainly lacking in certain areas but it does handle superbly. It just lacks the clever design of the Mario games. I do love DKC1 but find the other games to be merely decent.
Here is another SNES game I love, I only got to play it for the first time a few years ago and was really impressed by how close to the arcade it is. Capcom really made up for the crapness of the Final Fight port with this conversion:

I'm actually really tempted to pick up a snes cheap to see Super Metroid. That is LITERALLY the only reason I would buy one. But I would be willing to put prejudices aside to see what its like. any other games that would be worth considering when you take into account that I hate pretty much ALL the nintendo staple franchises such as Mario and Zelda

I think you would like
Magic Sword, which I already posted the video for, and also Captain Commando, which again I posted above, as I know you love
The Punisher and this is a very similar beat 'em up by Capcom.
Of course the other game I think you would love is

Prejudices against a console? Against games?
Well I never!
Why not pick up a SNES cheap and get stuck in to some of the best games of the era? I certainly would and it offers a brilliant balance alongside the Mega Drive. Both consoles contain classics of the era.
SNES was a favourite of mine.. especially Mario Kart..
Most of my friends had Megadrives at home, though there was a couple with Snes' that brought them into school for SF2 and MK tournaments good times!

not so much a prejudice against the console, more a prejudice against Nintendo... but that's neither here nor there. Anyway I shall have a look at those recommended titles and see which ones take my fancy
cheers Laird
Gradius 3? Nononononono! Terrible slowdown!
Yeah I know what you mean. My top 10's are based on how much I played a game. I never had the fortune back then of owning every single game so I work on the basis of back then and what I played most out of my collection.
Hehe, no need to explain.Â

Nine hours into Final Fantasy 6 now and loving it. Just done the opera scene and it was still very well done after all these years. Very dark game it is too.
Still, maybe someone will join soon that actually likes Final Fantasy!
Power Drive, just got the Celica on stage 6 and that is an ace game.
I've been playing the SNES since I was 4 or so, ever since my cousin used to own one. Eventually, I ended up getting one of my own, which means I didn't have to drive an hour to his house to play it. Off the top of my head, he had Mortal Kombat (I didn't know about the arcade version at the time), Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II Turbo, (Yeah, he had both. Don't ask me why.) and Super Mario World. He also had a Game Genie, which my grandmother would use to attempt to play Super Mario World.
Eventually, when I got my own, I ended up getting stuff like Super R-Type, Earthworm Jim, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Honestly, out of all of those, I'd say EWJ aged the best.
I bought the Super Nes when it first came out. I was impressed with Super Mario World at the time. Were the Super Nes shines is games like Adventures of Batman & Robin, Aerobiz, Batman Returns, Donkey Kong Country, Sim City, Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario Kart, Super Off-Road, UN Squadron, Wings 2: Aces High, and Wing Commander.
I have never played the Legend of Zelda or any of the Final Fantasy games. I have Zelda and Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest but have not devoted anymore time than making sure they loaded in my Snes correctly.
Games that have not held up for me Alien vs. Predator, Donkey Kong Country 2 & 3, Super Chase H.Q., and most of the sports titles.
To my surprise I recently discovered Ultima VII. It is frustrating at times but I still want to keep playing.
Quote from: "onthinice"To my surprise I recently discovered Ultima VII. It is frustrating at times but I still want to keep playing.
If you're enjoying Ultima 7, you want the DOS version much more, trust me. The original version had a lot more features, like having an actual party, and more interactivity in the world. It's also got a better story. For one thing, you know how there's a kidnapping at the start of the SNES version? In the original version, that's a MURDER.
Thanks Bobinator! The DOS version sounds really good.

Mentioned this in the Fiction/Fact thread, but word has it Sony payed Yamaha an 'undisclosed' sum to buy the PLAYSTATION name, so guess if true, no wonder they kept it.
Wasn't it originally called the 'Play Station' within Sony before they settled on 'PlayStation'?
(Yes, I know about the relevance of 'PSX' here!)
I just found this absolutely classic video:
Parents Upset Over New Nintendo Console - Super Nintendo - Circa 1991 (//http)
I owned both back in the day, my SMD was a crimbo present but I had to work an entire summer holiday to save up for the SNES. I wasn't disappointed, it was a great console. That and the SMD complimented each other perfectly and for me it was better to be in both camps than stick all my eggs in one basket. Both machines had far too much to offer to be ignored. I forgot to mention that I was lucky enough to own the PCE too, another fantastic console and probably my favourite overall.
Great era, great times, great games.

I had to sell my MD to get a Snes. Never regretted it but It still did not stop me from occasionly being jealous of certain games coming out for the MD.
Both 2 of the greatest machines ever. Pains me to see people calling any one of the other crap. Its usually people falling into the trap of thinking that if they prefer one then that automatically means the other was crap. Its a case of people just trying to validate their choice when in reality you can still prefer one over the other and admit both were great. Its really surprising how many people fail to understand that.

Classic indeed! Great to seeÂ
Blame the video games! Classic indeed!
I'm trying to casually get into the Snes guys, I've got the following games:
Street Racer
Super Metroid
F Zero
Tazmania
Cybernator
Super Mario All Stars
Super Mario Kart
Starwing
Anyone got any other good recommendations that would be reasonably cheaply priced?
A few I like:
Super Double Dragon
Magic Sword
Captain Commando
Turtles In Time
Top Gear
My SNES collection is pretty small but a couple good ones I have are the first Super Mario World and Blackthorne. I was also going to say Starfox until I realized Starwing is the same game, never knew it had a different name over there.

It didn't, it was called Star Fox here too.
Good list, Laird!
Desert Strike
Lost Vikings
Super Off-Road
Super Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Super Nintendo/SFC is a hard system for me to recommend titles. There are a number of good games, but some are pricey and others have been done better on other systems.

Not according to Wikipedia it wasn't. It says the Pal versions of both SNES and N64 games had different titles due to copyright.
Hmmm, seems you are right. I could have sworn it was called Star Fox here!
Oh well, I never much liked the game anyway, I had moved onto the Jaguar by then and it just seemed like a poor man's Cyber Morph.

It looks like starting with the Gamecube games they were allowed to use the original name so maybe that's what you were thinking about. It's a fun game but I definitely agree that Cyber Morph is a better gameÂ
Five of my SNES favorites that haven't been mentioned:
Space Megaforce
Ninja Warriors Again
R-Type 3
Tetris Attack
Contra 3

I guess that means he knows what he's talking about as opposed to the alternative.
Well it's the limitations of the SNES hardware that cause slowdown, sometimes with clever programming you can get round it though.
I do SNES homebrew, and I honestly can't understand the big deal is with the CPU. The few times I had slowdown, all I had to do was optimize a collision routine, or a tight loop, and goodbye slowdown. It takes literally 5 seconds to fix. Sprite animation management was way more of an issue.

I also have Super Empire Strikes Back and it's another one that I agree is way too difficult!
that's a good video and an accurate list for games that people actually bought and played. I'm sure there are tougher games on SNES, but they are games nobody even wants to play for being so bad. At least the games in that video are kinda fun for awhile until steam starts shooting out of your ears from frustration.
The really funny thing is he's talking about how hard those games are, but the videos reveal a master at work in every game, with not a single death recorded anywhere!

That is a well thought out list.
The lack of sports titles actually was a good thing. Nintendo did not start to compete with Sega in sports games till about 1994/95. So seeing only two sports titles made sense.
Cool, glad you like it, ice!
The Super Nintendo seems like the red headed step child of Nintendo. Sometimes forgotten between the NES and N64. It deserves more credit for the part it played in video game history.
Thanks again for sharing that link, TrekMD!

Not sure, I'd never heard of the game before. Did a quick search and didn't find anything though.
So, it is possible it has not been translated. Maybe someone will do it now that there is more awareness of the game.
Sad as it looks like a very good game.
It might have been a tough sell if it had been released in 1995. Everyone was going Donkey Country crazy. To come out as a download only in 1998, was a good thing but the N64 was the main Nintendo platform and seems odd to release even then.
Dusted off the Snes over Christmas and watched my friend beat The Mask. Finding Milo in each stage really makes the difference (it permanently increases your health points).

Been playing Axelay all day. Can't get enough of this game!
The guys from GameSack have done a review of the SNES. Check it out...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqfnreKMPE8
Yeah, I watched this last night fantastic episode it really was, but nearly touched on the catalogue even after 45 mins of reviews etc, they'd need to do a second part on the SNES, sure I could suggest a list the length of a octopuses tentacle in games they hadn't covered :)
Yes, it was a nice video indeed. I checked out some of the titles they show as the games look good (I really like that Knights of the Round) but all the ones I like are pretty expensive! I guess it speaks to the strength of the console.
Been thinking about the Super Nintendo and some of the games lately. What really stands out after all these years is the boxes. Most of the artwork was amazing. Hard to pick up a modern day console game case and get the same feeling.
Well, there is something to be said about the game art of all those older games. Certainly they tried to make our imaginations run wild and it worked well. That worked because there were limitations with the graphics. Nowadays the games are almost picture perfect so the covers don't need to have the same effect.
Very true and there is so much more access to information now. In the Super Nintendo days it was word of mouth, magazines and display cases to entice you.
Oh yes, very different days. No way to just "google" anything you wanted.

Awesome! I agree with all of the picks in that video. The Super Nintendo library is vast and full of top quality games. Several years back I embarked on a campaign to collect and play all the SNES titles that I didn't get to play when I was younger. In the course of doing this, I quickly rediscovered my love for the console, and my collection of about five cartridges grew to almost 100.
I don't have an SNES but I'm using the Retron N5 to play its games. The games are good indeed. :)
Just received a new RGB SCART cable for playing SNES on my CRT.
I've only ever played with s-video but my new CRT doesn't support it so had to upgrade to RGB.
s-video is very good but RGB gives me brighter more vibrant colours.
Loving it. :)
Got it from retrogamingcables. I went for the universal one that works with NTSC and PAL in case I get an SFC in the future. My current SNES is modded for region and 50/60Hz selection.
Really nice build quality. A wee bit more expensive but you get what you pay for. The image is gorgeous. Would post a picture but my camera doesn't pick the CRT picture up very well.
Just bought one of these off ebay for big dollars. Wanted one for a while but never got it while it was in stock, so i had to go on ebat cause they are not making any more.
Was all about Mario kart for me love at first sight :p
In this video, John Hancock picks 10 games for the SNES that are still very affordable and common to find.

Mixed feelings on that list. I hated Super Star Wars - that first level was such a tedious slog. I got onto later levels but I had lost interest by then. Looks and sounds great though.
Super Off Road was a nice game but it's big drawback is it came out before the multi-tap - so it's only 2 player which hurts it a fair bit.
Surprised Super R-Type is considered cheap though. Plagued with slowdown. RType III is far better but that is expensive.
F-Zero, Pac Attack and Williams Arcade would be my picks out of that bunch. Super Off Road in reserve. :)
I'm not very familiar with the SNES. I have a Retron 5 and only a few SNES games, with F-Zero among them. I mainly wanted it for Mr. Do! I love the SNES port of the game!
I was really into SNES when it was a contemporary console. Still really like it but I don't play it that much nowadays. Still have most of the games I got back then - all boxed with manual. Some of them quite valuable now but I wouldn't have the heart to sell them - so many great memories of multiplay with friends. :)
Collecting for the SNES is not cheap! When I hear of a good title, I try to see if I can find it at a reasonable price CIB. Nah, most are too expensive. I guess people threw out the boxes back then more frequently for this system for some reason.
yeah...cardboard boxes too - unlike the MD games with their nice hard cases.
Yep, that doesn't help either.
I've been considering downscaling my PAL SNES collection and getting my favourites as JP-NTSC, using the funds from selling the PAL game. I have almost completed that exercise with my N64 collection.
Most of the PAL games I have work at 60Hz though so there isn't a really big drive to do that theway there was with the N64. My SNES is modded for 50/60Hz and is region free. So I really only need to get the NTSC versions of those games that got optimised as they glitch at 60Hz. Some games have a nag screen that require you to boot the game in 50Hz and then flick to 60Hz which is mildly annoying too. I've bought a few US and JP games cart only and kept the CIB PAL game for the shelf. Not sure how far I want to take it though. The JP games are more desirable because of the novel packaging.
How large is your PAL SNES collection?
It's down to 45 games now. About 5 or so of those are import games. Was well over 60 before I had my clearout.
Making me think of the those good games I have now!!!
These are all PAL complete in box with manual unless stated.
I have most of the "greats" 1st party games:
Super Mario World
Pilotwings (US version)
F-Zero (sold the PAL boxed version - have the US version cart only. On the lookout for JP boxed)
Zelda ALttP (complete with map and unopened hint book)

Super Tennis
Tetris & Dr Mario (US version)

Cool Spot
The good games I sold that I can remember :-
Super Metroid - the big box version with the player guide - great game but I wasn't ever going to play it again.
Parodius - have all of the Saturn games in that series. Hurts a bit when I think of it - is a good port - but again - was never going to be played when I own the majestic Saturn version.
Pop n Twinbee as I intend to get the JP version OR the Saturn version (more likely)
Buster Busts Loose - gorgeous game but I had played it literally to death - could 1 life it on hardest difficulty
Rainbow Bell Adventures - gorgeous game but won and done.
That is a good bunch of games!
They really should get more playtime. I have still to complete some of them. :)
It got a lot of playtime in the early 90s though. So much nostlagia wrapped up in that console with me. As a group we played a lot of SNES and MD in same room multiplayer.
Latest addition to my Super Famicom collection....starting to move from SNES to SFC...stunned by just how good a condition this is in. Imagine getting a PAL copy this good....this is better than when I got mine new in Woolworths!!!

Delighted with it. I have US version cart only but this is beautiful for the shelf. :)

Awesome!
A few weeks ago I "picked up" Pilotwings for the SNES. I have emulated it before and really enjoyed the game. I love it and I'm glad to "have" the physical cartridge in my collection.
To be honest, I haven't played the game yet. I had been on the waiting list at my local game store for a couple of months and it just came in a few weeks ago. I didn't have the funds for it at the moment (blew all my Christmas money on the 7800 and I don't have a job yet because of COVID-19) so I made a deal with my dad. He'd buy the game for me, but it would be a Christmas present. So, I can't play it until Christmas!
I love the SNES. It was the console that really got me into retro gaming and gaming in general a decade ago. Five year old me couldn't get enough of Super Metroid and Super Mario All-Stars. Sadly, stupid kiddo HDN dropped his poor old dad's SNES on the hard wood floor, so now it's had an ugly chip next to the power LED for almost as long as I have been playing it. It still works fine however, and I still love the thing. I'd just like to find a way to get that chip filled in. My dad says it's OK and that I was just a kid, but for years I've just felt really guilty about "destroying family history". My dad got the thing in '91 and played it a lot in college.
Sega Genesis is fine, but it ain't Super Nintendo!
My favorite game of all time is on the system, Super Metroid. I'm lucky to have a cartridge of the game at all given how expensive the game can get. Thanks, Dad, for not getting rid of your old games!
Rarest game I have for the system? SOS. My dad bought it for a couple of bucks at a video store, according to him. I had no idea it was an expensive game until I was inputting my entire collection into pricecharting.com to keep track of it all! It's a fun game and a hidden gem, but it isn't worth $70.
Back in the day I was agonising over choosing between Megadrive and SNES. Pilotwings is what tipped the scales for me and I went for SNES.
One of my mates had a Megadrive so we had the best of both worlds anyhow :)
Its great to hear all the memories with the SNES. I do not own any Super Famicom games which is a shame as I really like the packaging and artwork on the carts.
Most recent Super Famicom pickup. I used to own this in PAL but it was very tatty so I sold. Always meant to replace it with the JP version. It isn't in perfect condition but it's good enough for me. It's a splendid vertical shmup from the Parodius team who left Konami and formed Treasure. Pop N Twinbee on SNES might just be better than even the excellent Saturn version.

Great find! I really like the artwork.
