Does anyone remember Breakout, Arkanoid or the original Impulse on the Atari Falcon? Well now meet Impulse X.
Basically the goal of the game is to destroy all bricks using a bat and ball in each of the playfields. There are 40 to start with. So far so good, predictable you may think - but now check this out. You can control the bat with the usual Jagpad, ProController, Rotary Controller and also supported is a digital mouse!

You remember I said 40 playable fields? Well you can also create your own playing fields using the built in level editor and using webcodes supplied for your Top Ten scores compete on High Score Tables with other players.
Features include:
User designed levels can be stored on the Memory Track cartridge
High scores can be stored on Memory Track
A BJL Loader is also included allowing download of RAM based Jaguar programs via the PC to your Jaguar
Both CD and cartridge versions
Difficulty levels
Level passwords
Full colour box and manual
(Cable and Memory Track are not included)

So as you guessed from above the game is on Jaguar CD, but fear not a Cartridge version will be available in a couple of weeks. This post will be updated as soon as they are available!
Mathias Domin has worked extremely hard on this, you get a CD Box with a Full Colour Manual, Impulse X Poster on which you can record your score on the reverse and a Colour printed CD. The presentation shows the amount of thought and care that has gone into this game. In the manual are pin outs for the BJL cable, mouse and rotary controllers. This product oozes dedication, bringing you a great addition to your collection and something to be proud of.

Something of interest for you computer music fans, there is a note inside each box promoting "505" who did the music for Impulse X. They are well worth checking out and you can look at there website HERE!

I want to get this both in CD and Cart. I wonder if I should wait to order them both together since the cart will be delayed.Â
Cool! I'll be ordering this, just not sure if I want CD or cart. The CD price is pretty cheap so I might go with that.
My only concern is it selling out on CD before the cart comes out. I may just get it now and get the cart once they are out.Â

Yeah that's probably a good idea. I'm going to order a CD copy today.
I have ordered mine already, review coming soon!Â

Just ordered mine too. I see it has rotary control support. I've never bothered to buy a rotary cause I only had T2K to play with it and seemed like a lot of money for one game. Now that I'll have two games that support it I may look at getting one. Anybody have one?

Kobayashi Maru supports rotary control too, as will Rebooteroids when that is released.
Personally I don't really like the rotary controllers.

Yes, I have two different rotary controllers and love them both (so I'm the polar opposite of Laird there). T2K plays much better with them and now I can use them with Impulse X as well!
Thanks for the input guysÂ
If I can find one for a good price I might get one.
This one is my favorite of the two, the T2K Commander:

I got from Danny Galaga on JS2. He makes them (or at least, he did).
Mathias Domin has put a lot of effort in this project, and as he said on Jagfest let's hope it pays off. Homebrewers must feel it's worth the effort to do really great games, so whether on CD or cartridge, this is a must-have for Jag-fans.
My copy has already been despatched so hopefully I will have it soon!!!!Â

Looking forward to a review then.Â

Just need to get my Jag CD working again now
Cool! You got it! And what happened to your JagCD?!
Quote from: "TrekMD"Cool! You got it! And what happened to your JagCD?!
Somebody broke it at Video Game Carnival by slamming the lid down with their fist. I am now on the 4th attempt to try and fix itÂ

You should have whoever the idiot was pay for a new one. But you don't know who it was, do you? How can people be so careless with something that isn't theirs?!
I know, to say I was angry is an understatement, really ruined my weekend.
I need to get it working so I can play Impulse X!!!

I can imagine. Best of luck getting it fixed!Â
What's up with it? Lid not shutting?
Quote from: "zapiy"What's up with it? Lid not shutting?
That is the main thing now, the clip is broken that holds it down/ in place and it seems to be impossible to fix. It just broke again for the 4th time. Don't think its fixableÂ

Why don't you check with the folks from Best Electronics? Maybe there is a solution they can offer.
Man, that's tough luck. I don't have a Jag CD here, so I'm not sure anymore how it worked, but maybe you can trick it to think the lid is closed like with the original PlayStation?
Not easy to explain in English, but in the original PS1 there was a long part on the inside of the lid; that part would stick into an opening in the console when the lid is closed; this was how the console checked if it was open or closed. So you could stick a match between the open lid and the opening in the console and the system would think the lid is closed.
This was used in the early days to run imports and bootlegs.
Maybe such a trick would work on JaguarCD too, there should be a similar simple mechanism that checks if the lid is open or not. It's no long term solution, but this way you could play with the open lid...
I managed to get it working by putting something heavy on top to weigh it down, allowed me to play Impulse X anyway.
Review to follow very shortly . . . . . . .
REVIEW:
The latest game for the Jaguar by Matthias Domin, this is his biggest project yet and is actually an upgraded conversion of Duranik's (Sturmwind, Alpine Games and Native) Atari Falcon game of the same name. In essence this is pretty much a straight clone of Taito's classic Arkanoid, which was itself an evolution of Atari's Breakout. For those who have somehow never played either game, you have a bat and a ball and must use them to destroy the rows of bricks above you. Clear all of these multi-coloured walls and it's on to the next level to do the same again. Each level has the bricks arranged in different layouts that become harder to destroy as the game goes on. The main difficulty comes in the shape of indestructable blocks that get in your way, you really need to get your angles right to get past them. Thankfully the game also gives you power-ups to help you along the way. These are distributed at random when you destroy the bricks and must be collected using your bat. These powers include glue - where the ball sticks to your bat allowing you to aim it, magic - your ball will pass through any and all bricks without stopping and a crazy multi-ball too, which is very hard to keep up with! The most useful power-up of all though is the warp, this pink coloured icon lets you skip to the next level. Impulse X also include handy level codes which, when attained, allow you to go back to where you left off. Add to this a level editor that also allows you to save your creations to the memory track (CD version) or cartridge and we have a real winner on our hands. Another nice touch is that this game supports a mouse (with adapter) and the Tempest 2000 rotary controller as well as a joypad! The graphics might not be anything special but they are colourful and do the job perfectly. The sound is wonderful though with a wonderfully melodic sound track by 505 Music. All in all I would say that Impulse X is one of the best homebrew games ever released for the Jaguar and MD Games should be applauded for what is an incredibly professional product.

Very cool!Â
Huh? You had played it before?
I mean, you can't play a game and write that review both in half an hour? XD

It came this morning, I played it for a few hours ;)
You received it fast Laird!
Nice review, I can't wait to play it!

I think I must have been one of the first people to get it (apart from those who attended eJagfest) as I posted my review on here before the release had even been mentioned on JS2Â
My copy of this showed up today and I just finished playing it for 2 hours straight! I've never been a big fan of Breakout 2000 but I am loving this game. It's incredibly fun and the power ups are really cool. The packaging is very well done too, highly recommend this game.Â

How come nobody else is submitting their high scores? I mostly play in easy mode just cause it's too frantic in normal mode and right now I am in 5th placeÂ
I'm calling out Laird and Trek and anyone else who has this game to start putting some scores up! This could be a lot of fun if everyone starts posting their scores for everyone else to try and beat. Oh and if other people prefer normal mode then post those scores too and I guess I'll try to get better at it!

You know what, I totally forgot about this!
I will give it another play and try submitting some!
Ok I just submitted a score, it's not very good as my eye strain started playing up and I had to stop. Will give a go another day.Â

Cool! I submitted a score on the normal level last night but it's really bad lol
Just got an email from 16/32 who I bought this from and they're sending me an update. I have no idea what it is but that's some incredible customer service. Anybody know what this is about?

No clue either. I got a similar message.
A bug was found that appears under certin conditions in later levels, and Matthias Domin felt he should replace all game discs.

Thanks for the info!
Yeah thanks for the info. Very nice of Matthias to do that.
I have actually noticed a few bugs but I didn't really care that much.
This was probably a bug of a more serious kind, like it happens rarely but can break the game so you can't go on I imagine. Still it is very generous to replace discs, imagine big publishers to do that. Today they can patch, but in older days you were just stuck with the buggy copies; and unlike Matthias they have a budget and it's not just a hobby for them.
So I find this ver ind of him to.
I got my replacement CD todayÂ
Just a bump as the cartridge version of this great game is now available.

At £58.00 it's a little pricy but it does also include the previously CD only release Double Feature.
I have both games on CD already and can't really justify buying this at that price but if you don't have a Jag CD it's definitely worth itÂ
