Title: Games For Halloween!
Post by: TL on October 29, 2012, 14:32:06 PM
[align=center:1s4sb52n]So Halloween is here and there have been plenty of scary games over the years. Do you play horror based games on Halloween? If so what are your favourites?

Here are some of mine:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CkpcZTa7MA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CkpcZTa7MA)

Cauldron II - Sinclair Spectrum

My sister used to insist that we played this game when we were kids, I always hated it but she loved and would play it for ages despite the fact she would always end up shouting at the game after several unfair deaths!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tea1HjWeVXk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tea1HjWeVXk)

Dracula: The Undead - Atari Lynx

One of the very few good games out there based on a horror movie the Lynx version of Dracula has some genuinely scary moments, amazing atmosphere, fabulous graphics and enough gameplay to last through the night!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEhFFU_vRZE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEhFFU_vRZE)

Alien Vs. Predator - Atari Jaguar

Not strictly a horror game but probably the most scary game I have ever played. Alien Vs. Predator manages to create some amazing atmosphere and there is nothing more scary than when you hear the cackle of the Predator as he creeps up on you![/align:1s4sb52n]

The best would have to be Resident Evil. It's not aged to well but when it was a new title nothing scared me as much as that game.

(2nd attempt.1st try never made it to the thread.)

Built up good few over the years, earliest would have to be 3D Monster Maze (ZX81), what that game achived on such primitive hardware, still amazes me to this day. Great to see Jag AVP mentioned, hearing Predators mocking whisper sent chills down my spine. Also worthy of mention:System Shock 2 and Clive Barkers Undying on PC-Great use of audio to create atmosphere, sound so often sadly an ignored medium in games.

Platoon (C64)-Tunnel sections, blood thirsty VC leaping out of the water, right at your throat was a pant changer.

Xcom (PS1) superb music and real feeling of creeping dread on missions as you never knew what was lying in wait and the greatest fear? INCOMING!!! Blaster Launcher missile zig-zagging it's way to your squad.

Chiller on the c64.  Loosely, well all right, completely based on Michael Jackson's Thriller.  Fun, challenging and playable.  For a short time anyway.

I guess Res Evil on the GC would be a good one to play on Halloween too.

Have to agree with resident evil, up to 4 anyway. The ones after that haven't been very good. Also can't go wrong with Doom. I seem to remember playing a game based on Friday the 13th on the NES too but I don't think it was very good.

I've yet to play Dracula on the INTV...haven't gotten to it yet.  :)  Still have a lot of games to explore.

Insofar as Halloween games, well, there's Halloween for the 2600 and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (special editions)!

Welp, here comes the requsite DOS game. Sorry, it's in my contract.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfA2TF2JUD0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfA2TF2JUD0)

This is Monster Bash, from Apogee, released in the year 1993. It's a fantastic platformer with some great looking graphics. The sprites are huge on screen, and everything makes such a great use of the limited 16 color pallete that you'd swear the game was running VGA. There's also some great music and a lot of digitized sound effects. More importantly, the game controls well, constantly throws new stuff at you, and has a ton of secret areas.

Evil Twin is a pretty spooky, unusual, dark and melancholied game for halloween... but probably the best one I can think of is Medievil on PS1

I downloaded that game on my Vita a while ago. Completely forgot about it but it's perfect for Halloween. Might have to play it a bit tonight.

It would have to be Soft and Cuddly for the ZX Spectrum. A weird game with twisted and sometimes quite sick graphics.

I can see that. When the monster you couldn't kill started chasing you it got pretty tense!

Halloween is a little over a month away and, of course, all the stores are full of Halloween stuff already.  So, what games are you going to get ready to play for Halloween?  I know one that is coming to the 2600 that would be very appropriate for a release on or before Halloween:  Project Z!  What's more appropriate than shooting zombies on Halloween?  ;)

I figure I'm going to boot this up. I've had an off and on relationship with this game ever since I was little, even if I could never beat the first 'episode'. (That's what's basically the 'demo' for these old shareware games.)

Monster Bash · PC MS-DOS Platform Game (//http)

Now here's a game. Huge sprites! Great music and digitized sound effects! Surprising amounts of gore! ...Rather frustrating level design.

...Oh, Monster Bash, I forgive you. This time.

I bought a a Sega CD (again) a while ago and spent a couple hours playing it today.
This was one of the games I played and perfect for Halloween. As far as games based on movies go it's not bad. It looks good and has great atmospheric music, really hard though!

This is one of my all time favorites and I feel blessed to still have the game, to be honest as it's getting harder and harder to find these days.

For me on this though, two 3DO goodies, one being Escape from Monster Manor and also Killing Time. Both are FPS games and are spooky in their own way. Also, just to throw it in there, Alien Trilogy for the Playstation and Saturn can get you pumping too. Claustrophobic and spooky! Oh, and where's the love for Alone in the Dark?

I just mentioned Typing of the Dead above but I really have to expand on it. That game is typical Sega genius - no other dev house would have the way out thinking that produced that game.

It shouldn't work of course - but it does. To the uninitiated - it is a remake of House of the Dead 2 except instead of using a light gun to shoot zombies you use the keyboard to type words - a word or phrase is displayed beside each enemy and you have to type each out to kill off each enemy - take too long and you get hit by the enemy - just like in the original HOTD2.

The word list is inspired - ripe for double entrendre and is a hoot when playing in a group. The 2 player versus mode is not just a tacked on thing - but instead is really well designed - players race to complete words - finish a word first and your opponent scores nothing and you get the credit for it and score - such a simple mechanic makes it a highly competitive game and it is really well designed. Often there are multiple words on screen so you can play aggressively - trying to out type your opponent directly - or you can try and guess which word he/she won't go for and get that one instead - picking up easy points. It's a great mix of a small bit of luck and pure typing skills.

I have the Dreamcast version but it came out for PC as well and there was an arcade cabinet which boggles the mind, It didn't get a DC PAL release sadly but the US version is easy to import and works with the usual boot discs. The DC keyboards are easy to find too -  really worth tracking down.

well with Halloween approaching, what better way to bump this cool thread and hear what's your favourite Halloween inspired game were or what will you be playing this Halloween.

One of my favourites has to be the original Silent Hill in the ps1 and the brilliant Parasite Eve series, great and scary stuff. But I think the biggest one that will probably miss this Halloween is the shock horror title "Alison Road" the graphics are super realistic and incredibly spooky.

I was a big fan of Luigi's Mansion, though I didn't consider that scary in the slightest. I've also been playing Until Dawn recently, and have also played some Silent Hill (which I later decided wasn't for me :P). My friends have recorded some stuff for their youtube channel (No Nostalgia Filter https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyRm9h ... 2bgqvzPfYA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyRm9hNPW4Wz82bgqvzPfYA))  that is Halloween themed. I think they did some Splatterhouse, Castlevania, and Rampage...though I don't really consider Rampage Halloweeny myself.
