I'm playing a fair bit of these now. To be honest it's always been my favourite genre and I'm starting to abandon most other genres - at least - for regular playing.
I'm trying to get 1CCs on some of my favourites (getting to the end without using continuing).
Here's a video of the first one I recorded - Darius Gaiden - recorded the INP file played back directly off the screen so excuse the image quality. I've 1CCed this game both on Saturn and shumpMAME now.

Many other games tend to take a longer time to 1cc on average with shmups taking around 15-30 mins for arcade games. Good fun and I feel a lot more intense than other genres. Danmaku for sure gets intense.
That's what attracts me to the genre - you don't have to sit for hours - a playthrough can last maybe 30mins on some of the longer games. Of course you CAN sit for hours practicing but that's up to you - it isn't one of those timesink genres.
I also have a Gigwing video - ALMOST beat that game - I got to the true last boss (TLB) you only get to fight if you have beaten all the 6 levels without continuing. Will post that one too. :)
I am currently working on Dodonpachi Daifukkastu (aka Resurrection) on the 360. I have 1CCed it in Novice mode but that is like setting up base camp when climbing Everest - this games has a PILE of content.
It only has 5 levels but there are so many ways to play it is head spinning. So I am tackling 1.5 arcade mode and have got to the last level but I have some way to go before I 1cc that mode - and then I have to move to a different style of ship. Then there's hidden URA path in the game to beat. Then there is 1.51 mode. Then there's the Black Label Mode. Then there's the Arrange A and Arrange B modes...….most with 3 ships each with 3 different styles....
There's a difficulty level and way to play for every level of skill.
Gigawing run right up to the true last boss (TLB) - so close to beating this game. It is really mean with 1UPS - you only get a 1 UP awarded in level 4 if you are down to your last life (!)
So you have to get to the TLB with maybe losing only 1 life AT MOST and a pile of bombs to stand a chance. I lose a life at level 5 - a silly mistake that probably cost me the 1CC :(
Anyhow it's in 2 parts. This is the MAME version. I play it on Dreamcast too but that seems to be a bit tougher - have only to level 6 on that version. :)

These are awesome fella, I have been thinking about getting into shooters again, mainly for the reasons you already mentioned. TIME.
I love 2D shooters, perhaps more than any other game type. Helps release the stress! LOL I have some 3D shooters on the PS4 but they are just not the same.
FYI most cave shmups actually have 2 loops. ;)
I was playing some Gunbird on my Switch today. Being able to flip it and play in tate mode is nice. I like shooters but I'm nowhere near good enough to 1CC them!
Have been able to beat Gigawing on 1 credit.

Currently working on a 1-ALL of Sengoku Blade aka Samurai Aces.
Tough game but I'm starting to make progress.
I recently learned of one called Arrow Flash on the Gensis/MD. Looks like an awesome game!

The game looks fantastic by looking at the graphics from the game. Hope you finishes this game also.
