Title: Install Final DOOM in Linux
Post by: Saturn on August 18, 2016, 19:21:38 PM
Did some searching to put together a couple ways of playing Final Doom. The first method is best to get going quick but there's no music (it can be added via some means out there but I have no interest, personally). The other method is through Wine and although there's music, the graphics are really bad.

REF (http://www.oldpcgaming.net/final-doom-review/)
Download Final DOOM (https://firedrop.com/968ce9bd15be9ff8) & unzip it. A folder will be created named Final Doom.

Install Zandronum:
Via Terminal one at a time:
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb http://debian.drdteam.org/ (http://debian.drdteam.org/) stable multiverse'

wget -O - http://debian.drdteam.org/drdteam.gpg (http://debian.drdteam.org/drdteam.gpg) | sudo apt-key add -

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install zandronum -y

(and if zandronum doesn't automatically install Doomseeker):
sudo apt-get install doomseeker-zandronum

To run via Terminal:
doomseeker

For a single player game:
File-Create Game
Click the browse button next to IWAD
Navigate to the Final Doom folder you unzipped earlier (or your DOOM wads if you already have many) to select/install
Press Play offline button to start game

To join a server:
Click the "Get Servers" icon at the upper left
Good luck from here! ;)

Here's the Wine method with the graphics that bleed or something when you move. Haven't researched how to fix it:

REF (http://www.oldpcgaming.net/final-doom-review/)
Download Final DOOM (https://firedrop.com/968ce9bd15be9ff8) & unzip it. A folder will be created named Final Doom.
Move the Final Doom folder to your home directory and rename it to FD (for simplicity)

Via Terminal:
cd FD
wine zdoom.exe

(choose which game to play; Plutonia Experiment or Evilution)
This will start the game with default controls. To edit these controls look in the DF folder to find a newly created file named YourUserName.ini (YourUserName being exactly that in its place)
Open the file in a text editor and search for: uparrow=+forward (this will be line 418 in the document)
Change the following 4 lines from:
uparrow=+forward
leftarrow=+left
rightarrow=+right
downarrow=+back

to
w=+forward
a=+left
d=+right
s=+back

If you don't want to play in full screen mode search for fullscreen=true (line 153) and change to fullscreen=false
Quicksave the .ini file

Cheat Codes are the same from DOOM II:
