Title: Atari Jaguar: DOOM (assisted gaming)
Post by: Saturn on August 14, 2016, 05:09:40 AM
Was able to play this for several hours today without falling ill, which is an enormous change since the game's release 20+ years ago and now that it's reclaimed the position as my favorite for the system, I've used info and resources from this site (http://www.classicdoom.com/jagmaps.htm) to build all-in-one map gifs for the Jaguar version. This game can get hairy quick so if you're looking for some help navigating the maps, hopefully this can help.
And looking back, restarting my battle through this masterpiece on the difficulty setting of Nightmare! probably wasn't the best choice ;D

First, here are the classic cheats for this game. Nothing like a little invincibility to make life in hell a bit easier :P

Enter one of the following codes during game play to activate the
corresponding cheat function. Note: Codes may not be enabled during
Co-op or Deathmatch modes.

Invincibility
Press Pause, * + Pause. Alternatively, press Pause, 9, 4, 7, 4, 9,
2, 1, 0.

All keys, weapons, full ammunition
Press Pause, # + Pause.

Fire weapons while in automap screen
Hold C + B. If the controls have been reconfigured, hold the buttons
assigned to "Use" and "Fire".

Deathmatch or Co-Op more music:
Begin a multiplayer game in Level 23. Complete the level, then reset
one of the Jaguars during the ending text. Start a new Deathmatch or
Co-Op game on the Jaguar that was reset to play music during the next
game in the place of sound effects.

Level Select:
Press one of the following codes during game play to begin at the
corresponding level.

Wow, that's just awesome!

Thanks! Took the better part of my day to do it. Found I was getting lost and disoriented while playing so decided to help myself and possibly others by combining existing .gifs to overlap instead of endless clicking to view each part (keys, teleports, exits and secrets). Hoping it pays off when I fire up my Jag again.
Comparing today to 1993, it's crazy but very convenient to have my laptop or tablet open to RVG next to me while blazing through this complicated beast of a game 8)

Thanks Shadowrunner! I'm in the middle of Area 7 as I type this but wishing there was an arrowed path of the most efficient way to get through as well. I know, why don't I just wish someone would play it for me too lol.
It's not that bad, running out of weekend to play and want to get somewhere though :D

I'll have to check that out Greyfox. Don't have much to compare my experience too since I never got far in the PC version but can go by what's in the video or written.
Do you have a link to TrekMD's review?

It really isn't my review but a video comparing three versions:  Retro Face/Off: Doom (Sega 32x/SNES/Jaguar) (http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=7024.0).

Thanks, just watched it and learned a little bit. Sounds like the RAM limitations were a killer for other systems 8)

Just beat it on the easiest setting. Didn't get all the secrets, items or %100 but it's a start 8)
Weird, when I finished Area 23 the game ended with congratulations and a never ending scroll through the enemies. I reset the game and put in the cheat for Area 24. After beating it, it sent me to Area 4.
I wonder if this is common or my Jaguar is overheating from running for 2 days almost nonstop :P

This is one helluva game!

When I played area 24, it didn't jump to level 4. I think it just went back to level 1. I recall a warning in the game guide book if you try to load level 25 which, was not finished of course.

Thanks for the info. It probably didn't load Area 24 bc of the difficulty setting.
Why it went to Area 4, no idea. May have been a hiccup.

Will try it on the next difficulty and see if Area 24 loads 8)

Been playing Area 7 repeatedly trying to find out why it crashes here but nowhere else (so far)
I wrote up a quick guide to help me remember where to go as I still get lost in this huge labyrinth.

Area 7 fastest route:

Go straight across the hall & up the stairs.
Turn left at intersection & right at wall. (a right turn at the intersection will lead to a locked yellow door and lead you to the next point anyway so unlock it in the map if you want)

Enter the room with the dark walls and flashing lighting. Go up the elevator to grab the yellow key. (Can follow the bright lit wall around the corner for a short length to reveal another locked yellow door for the map)
TWO PATHS: (both lead to the same location and besides the dark elevator, nothing of value to see or obtain)
*PATH 1:
*Return to the door you entered from and continue around the corner following the brightly lit outer wall. Make your way around until you see a hallway leading south (on the map screen) or move on around this part of the complex to unlock it on the map.

**PATH 2:
**Exit the dark room and go left through the locked yellow door.

**For power ups, go right and take the dark elevator up. Just around the corner is the 'back' of the other locked yellow door (without any yellow border) leading back to the original area.

**Just ahead around the corner a brightly lit hallway is on the right that leads to a blue door on the left and a hallway leading south (on the map screen).

Take the hallway south, then up some stairs and enter the door to a dark area and collect power ups. Exit the door and go left down the hallway. Enter the door and make your way around the large room to an elevator in the back. Ascend and fight your way to the rear of the elevated and darkened room for the red key.

Exit the elevator and large room. Make your way back the way you came, following the hallway past the blue door (now on the right), hugging the left wall until you reach a door on it. (This is the unmarked rear side of a locked yellow door)

Follow the hallway, hugging the left wall until you reach the red door. Go inside and grab the blue key.

Exit and go back the way you just came, hugging the right wall all the way. Go through the yellow door and continue forward a short distance to the blue door on the left wall.

Enter the blue door. To the left is a locked door, so go down the hallway on the right and hang a sharp right turn at the 'end' to find a switch in a tiny room at the end of the corridor.

Flip the switch and backtrack to the where the locked door was. It's open now and a short distance in is the level exit.
