Title: Jaguar CD Custom DVD Cases
Post by: TL on May 14, 2012, 16:58:51 PM
I have been working on these loads recently and have been getting better and better at doing them, as well as improving a load of existing designs by both myself and other people I have also made a bunch of new ones too.

I made this one today, a new cover for the Demolition Man / Commander Blood Demo. The first picture is of the new cover I made and the second is a photo is a side by side comparison of my own and the awful original that B&C use when they sell it.

And here are 2 covers I made last week for Jet Pac and SLAM Racer. The Jet Pac one is a completely new design by myself using the original artwork from the Spectrum version of the game. The SLAM Racer one is re-design of one that is already out there, the main difference is the addition of a description to the back.

yes you have come a good bit along with the graphics work..my only qimp is that the back ground text needs to be centered and try keeping in tune with the colours with the colour scheme of the front covers, so example, the "Jetpac" one, I'd of used a colour picked from the laser bolt, and made it slighty dimmer but in the same color or a gradient of the colour for the pink to a darker pink, something like that, and also using bold on a font for text is only used for highlighting or quoting or slogan, if you need to bridge the text, put a string of screen shot between the paragraphs of text, it fills it out and removes lost space in the design.

okay that's your design lesson for today :)

nice work all the same.

Funny thing is that originally the text on the Jet Pac box was pink! I didn't really like it so I changed it to cyan, the same as the Jet Pac logo / writing on the side and thought it looked better. I can go back and turn bold off and see if it looks a bit better, easily done. The 4 screenshots at the top and non-centered text follows the original Atari design (its all left alligned on the original boxes). Also I have to say that the images shown here are not as high res the originals and they look far better actually printed out!

Thanks for the advice anyway, I am using Nero Cover Designer now to make them. It's a great program and incredibly easy to use, better than using MS Paint that's for sure! I am still really pleased with the Demolition Man / Commander Blood cover, especially my idea for having it double sided.

Those look very nice.  I don't think I've heard of Commander Blood as a Jaguar game.

It was finished but unreleased  :'(

It was for the Jaguar CD and there is a demo disc that has a Cinepak demo of both that and Demolition Man on the same disc.

Very decent of you to credit the holder of the Jetpac IP. I notice the individual who knocked out this "simple game" abjectly failed to do so... if the somewhat disingenuous text in that screenshot is anything to go by. :o

Have had some demand to do more so here are 2 new ones I did today:

Martian Attack and Saucer Strike

If anybody wants any of these just let me know as I can either send you the file (you will need a program that supports Nero/.ncf files) or I can make you one using a brand new DVD case for a very reasonable price.

Here are a couple more of mine:

This is a photo of the first cover I ever made for Varuna's Forces. It looks a bit rough now compared to my new ones so I might redo it at some point.

And this is a picture of another one of my new ones, the homebrew game Downfall.

What you think of my newer ones from a professional perspective?

QuoteWhat you think of my newer ones from a professional perspective?
on a professional level the choice of fonts for the caves of Fear seem not quite fitting to the content, maybe a fonts that has something like a grunge effect to it or gritty something like that instills some uneasiness to the artwork, when I saw it first I thought it was one of those adult soft porn interactive games from vivid films..lol..I respect that you're keeping with the Jaguar CD form in layout and design, but I feel them days have passed now and need some kind of 2012 visual injection to them, rather than the black, maybe some spatters of blood beneath the text and refrain from explaining too much on the back cover, larger fonts are our friends :)

another idea is to have your screenshots like a film strip across the top , text in between and then some more screenshot film striped at the bottom, another one would for me at least , would extract a main character from a clip and have them down along side the box and have the text follow the contours on the characters shape, but maybe a bit of a task for you to do, but in allot of cases , well worth the effort if you can put it off..

well it will be something you'll have to look into for future covers..there is nothing stopping you watermarking the background cover with an image at 20-30 % opacity under the text to set it alite..will add a bit of sparkle to your covers..using a bold heading and then normal sized text broken up with screenies you'll be amazing many cover actually have very little on the back these days.

The biggest challenge I faced with that Caves Of Fear one was that I couldn't find a high res, or anything other than tiny, Cinepak logo so I actually drew that one myself in Paint!!!!  :o

Look at another one I did recently and you will see the lack of text on the back:

yeah the Marble Madness cover is very good and very commercial looking, simulating this on other unknown titles can bear a homebrew look, due to the variables in source materials and artwork, these guys just don't product it in that manner, which is a shame, but if you are able to reverse engineer it to something a software house would have done back in the day, then your public will thank you for it , especially if it is software that has been newly made..but yes you have done some great work on your covers, but time to pull out all the stops. :)

I like it but I think it needs a bit more to it, the front is a bit boring.
Title: Re: Jaguar CD Custom DVD Cases
Post by: Greyfox on June 19, 2012, 19:59:40 PM
It's nice and colourful but the blank space in the back is really annoying me, can this not be filled with maybe a bolder font and a bigger size, break up the back cover more, rather than the text being lost all on it's own?

The logo is on the back twice, which is not done, So I would remove the logo at the bottom or replace the image up in the left top corner without the logo with something else, and centre the logo below instead of to one side.

I like it other than this, and soothing I would of done, was used that striped image at 50% opacity on the back, so rather than black hole black, as least the back cover would of had some thought put in to it..I hope this helps you improve and to try and see these type of mistakes in your future work, it's all about gathering the knowledge and using it to the full ;)

Yeah there is a fair bit of custom work in that believe it or not. I might make the bottom back look busier but overall that's it. If I knew it would fly of the shelves I might have dedicated more time.

Ooooohh very nice, love the idea with the fonts, is there not an actually Tff font available ? Rather than an image? It's a clever idea, but again I hate to keep bringing it up regarding the original jag cd template, I simple feel it's a wasted opportunity on design level point of view, these things are not games, but I understand than you do it for the home brew games etc..but I think the demo covers should be mind candy blow outs..lol..but you have done well my young Jedi apprentice ..the force is strong with this one ;)
Title: Re: Jaguar CD Custom DVD Cases
Post by: TL on July 12, 2012, 17:09:10 PM
No sadly not, it took me long enough to find that font! Still it worked a treat and I was really pleased with how it came out. It's nice to see a design come out just how you imagined it, probably the first time I have done that!

I know what you mean with doing something different, that was my thinking behind the "Mandlebrot Demo" one that you helped me with. Something that really stands out on a shelf with the wrap around design and lack of the standard plain black background.

At heart though I am somewhat of a traditionalist when it comes to these things so you won't see much else that is more outlandish  :P
Title: Re: Jaguar CD Custom DVD Cases
Post by: Greyfox on July 12, 2012, 17:14:49 PM
Been a traditionalist is fine, but you are limiting yourself and sticking to the scalelectirc path of design these jag covers you have created, it's time for the transformation to take these to the next level in design layout or even try to be the see what a new layout or design look would be like, you might be very surprised at the results.

I recieved a big order today for 50 custom Jaguar CD DVD cases!  :o

This means I am going to have to make some new ones from scratch and I made a good start on them today.

This is the first one I made for the F1 Racer prototype:

The second new one I made today was for the Gone Nutty & Doom 3 demo disc. There was a cover already out there for this that I had re-mixed a bit but I really wasn't happy with it so I decieded to make a new one and go for the double side cover style that I used on the Demolition Man & Commander Blood demo.

I was really pleased with how these turned out, let me know what you guys think!

Yes you do! They are expensive to buy but the games are cheap so the cost balances out nicely.

I'm still trying to save for the Turbo CD.

The more I see of the Jaguar CD leads me purchase one first.

I haven't made a new cover in ages but I am back with a bang today!

Somebody wanted me to make them a DVD case for the Brett Hull's NHL Hockey prototype. The one that Jaguar Sector II made for their release of the game absolutely sucks so I thought I would make one of my own and here it is:

It was a right bugger to make because I couldn't find a decent scan of the original box art for the Mega Drive/Genesis version and instead had to adapt this from the cover for the SNES version, which of course was totally the wrong aspect ratio! Anyway I am pretty pleased with how it turned out so let me know what you think.

Here is the original JSII version to compare it to:

If anyone wants high-res versions of my Jaguar CD DVD covers then you can download a freeware version of Nero Cover Designer HERE (//http) that will allow you to print the images.

Just shoot me a PM with the ones you want and your email or I can send you the whole lot.

Quote from: "The Laird"Have had some demand to do more so here are 2 new ones I did today:

Martian Attack and Saucer Strike

If anybody wants any of these just let me know as I can either send you the file (you will need a program that supports Nero/.ncf files) or I can make you one using a brand new DVD case for a very reasonable price.

Saucer Strike's UFO's are loosely based on the ufos of the British television series 'UFO!'.
one of my favorite theme songs too! :8:

Case art does look good though. Terance would be proud.  :1:

Now I have a CD printer I have been playing around with some designs for discs.

Many of you will have seen my DVD cover designs for the various prototypes that either didn't come with proper boxes (like Varuna Forces and Caves Of Fear) and the ones that did come with boxes but ones that look like they were designed by Steve Wonder (Jaguar Hockey and Demolition Man), but until now I also had to put up with awful looking CDs too!

Well not any more!  :8:

More to come . . . . .

Fella you need to play with the settings.  Set the outer to 120 and inner to 20mm.

That's pretty much what I've done with the free games that are available to burn on CD.  I have a CD printer and I just make them look nice before burning them.  They do look very nice so I can certainly appreciate what you did there, Laird!  :)

Really?

I thought all images on commercial cd/dvd's were pressed on and therefore would not show any white as there is none in the first place..

Those white lines may be unavoidable because of printer limitations.

My Epson will allow me to print to both edges, eliminating the white space - it just takes a little longer to dry.

Laird is using an Epson r220 with allows for full disc printing, I suspect the core of the discs he's using is not a printable area therefore show is at 42mm printing range. I use the Epson r265 printers with a continuous ink system saves incredibly on he print, as Epson are known for using ink up on customers, even switching it off and back on for use, uses 3%, nozzle clean 8%, charging the cartridges 13% :13:.

You can get continuous ink systems for this printer, if your serious about printing, works out far cheaper.

Post by: zapiy on February 20, 2014, 09:41:06 AM
I used to use the continuous system on the printer before I have it to Laird. I have the kit here that cost me a pretty penny but like you say it was cheaper as running some of the maintenance on it used up a lot of ink.
Title: Re: Jaguar CD Custom DVD Cases
Post by: Greyfox on February 20, 2014, 10:53:39 AM
There is lots of places were you can buy spurious ink cartridges that work on the printer, I used them for years before getting the continuous ink system and before anyone says, they wreck the printer, that is not true, they use the same icu chip Epson does on their ink cartridges, the different is ink qualityonly, some are complete shite, others are as close as you'll get to the real thing..but its better than paying £10-£15 per official cartridge to £1.50-£2.00 depending were you shop of course :)

Anyways the cover came out great and the disc looks dead smart too..welcome to the world of domestic printing industries lol...

I did another new one . . . . .

I am thinking of doing a run of these if anyone is interested, would be a double CD pack (like 9 Lives) with a CD containing the two demos and another CD with the unreleased Defender 2000 music CD. Both CDs would be fully printed with a high quality inlay in a new DVD case. Would only be asking £10 each for these.
