Title: The Video Game Archeologist
Post by: TrekMD on February 15, 2015, 23:00:13 PM
The Video Game Archeologist keeps an archive of game and console manuals online.  At the moment there are nearly 400 manuals uploaded, including 86 from the 2600.  Everything is viewable in a browser and the manuals are easy to find as the covers are all laid out on the page.  If you want to check it out the link is:  http://www.thevgatv.com/ (http://www.thevgatv.com/)

Nice idea but still needs a lot of work! I wonder if he does all the scans himself.

I was thinking the same myself, this is the guy that done that Master system book you linked me to months ago with the video clips embedded. We need to make a difference with these bloody publications lol.

Hey everyone, I'm Derek and I run the Video Game Archeologist site and am also the author of the Sega Master System Encyclopedia.  Just wanted to reach out and introduce myself.

Lorfarious:  Yes I do all the scans myself.  I am curious as to what you would suggest for my site?  I appreciate any and all feedback as I want this to be the best site it can possibly be.

Lots more scans! I'd also consider adding a bit of blurb for each entry at the moment its just a picture of the scan. So things like title, year of release, publisher etc. Would fill it up nicely and make a good reference without having to resort to searching elsewhere.

I have 62 more scans prepped and ready to go (hopefully going to get around to uploading those this evening after work).  And that is a great idea that I might be able to implement in the future once I get more time.  I'm in the process of finishing up the first volume of my Atari 2600 Encyclopedia, getting all the files sent off to the designer and whatnot, so that's the current priority.  That said the Atari 2600 Encyclopedia is going to have a lot more information than the SMS one did.

Welcome to RVG, Derek.  Glad you decided to join the forum.  I think the site is a good repository but it needs a nicer front.  :)

Trek, thanks for the invite and the share of my site.  I totally agree with you that I need a nicer front page.  As people who bought my last book found out, I'm about the furthest thing from a designer as you can get though!  :4:
Once I get the first volume of the Atari book designed maybe I can convince the designer to whip me up something.

GF does a superb job with design, so you may want to take him up on on his offer.  ;)

Cool, are they from different systems or any one system in particular?

I uploaded

12 Atari 2600
1 Atari 7800
9 Intellivison
39 NES
1 Odyssey II
1 SNES

I have another 250 manuals sitting on my desk waiting to be scanned in.  Just bought a high speed scanner so hopefully this will go much quicker.  Then I have to buy more!

Cool.  That's really great.  Sometimes I need a manual when I write game reviews and they are not easy to find online.  So, now I can look in your site to see if you have them scanned.  :)

Why don't you open the site for submissions?

Good idea, and much cheaper than buying all the manuals!

Zapiy, that's a great question.  The reason I haven't opened it up to submissions is because this site is that is has allowed me to start collecting again even though I can't afford the games anymore due to the fact they have gotten crazy expensive.  I travel for work so I'm able to visit lots of smaller independent game shops looking for manuals, and it just brings back the memories of digging through Goodwill bins and flea markets, and knowing that I need more manuals for the site pushes me.

That's actually a good point I guess. Keeps the drive there I suspect.

Title: Manual Scan Site
Post by: VgaTV on June 27, 2015, 16:46:13 PM
Hey everyone, can't remember if I shared this link with y'all or not.  I recently updated my manual scan archive and now have 519 scans to view.  I've taken a visual approach to the site, so instead of text links there are manual covers to click on, and all of the manuals are viewable in browser.  There are manuals ranging from 2600 up through the 16-Bit era, with over a hundred Japanese manuals.  Check it out and let me know what y'all think!
