Title: The Internet Arcade
Post by: TrekMD on November 03, 2014, 00:30:23 AM
I saw this and I know it is something that will be of interest to folks here...

The Internet Arcade is a web-based library of arcade (coin-operated) video games from the 1970s through to the 1990s, emulated in JSMAME, part of the JSMESS software package. Containing hundreds of games ranging through many different genres and styles, the Arcade provides research, comparison, and entertainment in the realm of the Video Game Arcade.

The game collection ranges from early "bronze-age" videogames, with black and white screens and simple sounds, through to large-scale games containing digitized voices, images and music. Most games are playable in some form, although some are useful more for verification of behavior or programming due to the intensity and requirements of their systems.

Many games have a "boot-up" sequence when first turned on, where the systems run through a check and analysis, making sure all systems are go. In some cases, odd controllers make proper playing of the systems on a keyboard or joypad a pale imitation of the original experience. Please report any issues to the Internet Arcade Operator, Jason Scott.

Yeah, this a fantastic piece of video gaming history for all to play, I remember when Jason was getting this together from his notes on his Facebook page, now he can focus his time on his Arcade Documentary he has in the works, a shame that these games don't work on the iPad :)

Is the issue on the iPad a browser limitation or something else?

I think so, I've tested it on the default Browser "Safari" and a third party one "Perfect Browser" which is much more sophisticated than Safari, and neither like Java at all, unless the emulator was done in HTML5 then it was never going to work.

I also had issues with Opera and firefox on Android (JXD, MotoG) again not been able to handle third party code, but if anyone else has got these running on a tablet device, please post about it here, I'd love to get to the bottom of this :)

The issue on Android devices may have to do with the fight between Oracle and Google.  There may be something in the code being used that doesn't allow some Java code to run.  I'll check on my Android devices to see what happens.

I just tested the page on my Transformer Pad TF701 and I was able to get games running without a problem.  I do need a gamepad to be able to play them, though.

Yeah I tried it on my TF201 and it does not work. Just about time for a new tablet I think.

Shadow, did the games not load for you or is something else not working?  Are you using Firefox?

Yeah they don't load but I didn't try it with Firefox. I'll try that tonight and see if it makes a difference.

I used Firefox to test it out.  You do need a gamepad to play, though.  I guess a tablet keyboard may also do the trick.

I tried again with Firefox and it's still a no go, it did work better to some degree though. The game would load to the title screen, and it said it recognized my controller, but I could never get the game to start. It would just freeze up and I could never go further.

My tablet is newer, so maybe that has something to do with it.  I have to test some  more.

This just got a lot bigger as they have added close to 2400 MS-DOS games! Really cool someone is doing all this and a great way to preserve these old games.
