I've been planning this for a while. There aren't many games that a 2D (Saturn in this case) controller would be useful for, but there are a few - a couple of 2/2.5D platformers and fighting games. Anyway, I had no idea if this would actually work - I gathered some info/pictures that described how the N64 controller board can be cut, but didn't see the end-result.
Here's how it went:
This is what's left of the N64 board:

2D Bomberman on the N64 with a Saturn controller. Now "all" I need to do is make 3 more of these.

Wow! Impressive work! There are some 2D fighting games on the Nintendo 64 I think would really benefit from that controller. Mortal Kombat Trilogy, for instance. It'd make the combos so much easier to pull off.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy was actually one of the first games I tested it with. Works really well with it. UMK3 on the Saturn used to be my favourite but I may have to spend some time playing this now. The loading time on the Saturn gets a bit tedious.
Now that I know that the controller works I do want to try and get some more done for multiplayer. The problem is finding cheap, reliable controllers to use. I used to use those "Play-Sega" Saturn ones but the D-Pad is very brittle and would always break after some serious gaming. Hopefully these retrolink ones will last, but I'm not holding my breath. Official Saturn ones are the best but are so bloody expensive these days.
