Yeah, we all know the story, bad game, landfill, video game crash of North America, yadda yadda.
But then they dug it up. (//http) All the gritty details are in the link provided, but basically, yes, it turns out the whole thing wasn't a crazy urban legend.
So, yeah, myth unbusted. Thoughts?
I think it's pretty cool they found it after so many years. Really want to see the documentary when it's done!
We should also start seeing a whole bunch of ebay auctions for "recently dug up" Atari productsÂ
I'm quite curious to see the documentary now! Clearly, though, they found more than just ET in there!Â
How many cartridges were found? The housings and pcb may be sold for about 10 dollars. As you may read within the book of curt there may be additional hardware dumped. May be atari 2600 housings which were produced and broken during transport? Is the landfill adventure over now or additional digging organized?
But why dump something if you are able to reuse it. Specially the game modules may be easily reused by removing sticker and reburn eprom with another title. And plastic over time does not vanish so what was the expectation it disappears by magical wonders? Finally it is a big pollution of nature.
I know~! I was so excited about the FINDINGS yesterday! I went on youtube and devored the dozen of videos, even though most of them were just reactions, not really NEWS about the findings. I hope we get more pics of MORE findings today!!!
Amazing news and really looking forward to seeing more and more from this over the coming days and weeks.
Lots of people are reporting that the "Atari Landfill Myth" was true when it wasn't. The myth is that Atari buried millions of E.T. cartridges in the New Mexico desert. The truth is exactly what Atari said it was all those years ago, random junk and unsold stock, including a number of different games.
It all matches what was described in Marty Goldberg and Curt Vendel's Atari book. One of the people from Atari who was responsible for the original burial was there, as well has Howard Scott Warshaw himself, and he saw it all and confirmed it was exactly what he said it was. There were a few E.T. cartridges but it was mostly other stuff. They took some carefully selected pictures to fuel the media but this is what they really found:
I see plenty of gaming stuff in that image lol..
I hope they find the Ark of the Covenant!
Raiders of the Lost Landfill!
I wonder do the carts still work?

Wouldn't that be amazing! Suddenly new collector's items!Â
You may want to check out this thread over at VGF: So, they've been found (Atari in the landfill)... (//http). One of the members, Mayhem, quoted someone who lives an hour from the site and personally went to check things out. He posted his own version of the events, which is a cool read.Â

I can't read that. But if it's the same Mayhem as AA and RG then he lives near LondonÂ
I didn't realize the thread cannot be seen. I fixed it. Mayhem is quoting someone who attended. He didn't go himself.Â

I remember my dad telling me about this when I was a kid, and when I asked WHY?!?!?! He said they do it for a Tax- Write-Off...I cried at the waste that humans will make in the name of greed.

Well, and they didn't want people looting it either, so the poured concrete over it!Â
The thing is that nobody ever said that the dump wasn't true, it was the contents that were called into question.
did they really pour concrete over it? I don't recall that in the original story that I was told.
Apparently when people started looting the place, they decided to pour concrete over whatever was being buried. That section has not been excavated yet.Â
The most amazing thing is that they've found consoles also and both consoles and carts work just fine.
I still wondering if they are really experts. Sorry but using bulldozers is not very clever as you can see the "dig" is more a "rip". As every picture confirms the bulldozer approach destroys a lot of modules, paperwork. I learned that if you'll find something old you use a brush and small tools, first shot some pictures and try to document all of the findings. Here some bulldozers rip off earth and destroys a lot of the findings in first run without the chance to keep them untouched.
And specially as all these items and new one on top are toxic they should wear protection suites.... hopefully they get all these items out of the area so compensate this economical desaster.

It's a nothing story really, they found exactly what the experts said they would, despite the sensationalist journalism to the contrary.
But I thought they had not opened the main dumping area?

Well, I'm sure there were some of those carts in there as well.Â
I saw an interesting news report about the landfill. It seems the found material are from a near atari plant which was converted to a service center due to cost reduction. Due to this change there where several tons of modules, spare parts etc loaded and transported to this area silently. Bad this was seen and made public.

I have already spoken about this and it was public, hence why it was in the Atari book recently.
This was the original story, the E.T. story was the created myth.
I'll bet that somewhere in my local landfill there are some wonderful systems, like Colecovision, just abandoned by bad parents.

Yes I got mine too, I took a photo too but forgot to post it!
Ah, very cool! Glad you guys got them already!Â
So they decided to sell 800 of the games that they dug up. They will be sold through the Alamogordo city website and ebay starting in a couple weeks, so I guess if you want one keep an eye out. Personally I don't see the point. Sure it's kinda a cool collectible, but it's been sitting in a dump for 30 years! I'll Pass!

In any case, Microsoft showed a non-final version of the documentary today. I got to watch most of it (had to leave for a dinner commitement) and I have to say it is well done. It'll be great to see the final version once it is released in DVD/BD.Â
You should have taken a video clip on your phone and posted. Oh, maybe not with legalities and all. Did they say when official release will be?
Quote from: "sloan"You should have taken a video clip on your phone and posted. Oh, maybe not with legalities and all. Did they say when official release will be?
That was not allowed. I believe they said it'll be available to XBox users in November with a later release on DVD/BD.
And now some of the games are being sold on ebay:Â Atari Dig Games (//http).
Who didn't see this coming.
I guess it was inevitable but $50 for a fetid, chewed up game? I mean...come on.
Zero feedback seller too.
Not for me.
Sold!Â
Yeah that's just crazy! The E.T cartridges start at $100 and there's already a bid on a few of them
Bonkers for sure. The carts may not even work!Â
The documentary about the dig is due for release to XBox Video this month, specifically, the 20th. No word on what other formats it will be released to yet.Â

As for the E.T cartridges getting so many bids, I don't get it! Are these all speculators thinking these will be worth a fortune some day? If so I think they're sadly mistaken. With so many copies being sold, and at such high prices, they will never get their money back. These people are going to be left with a very expensive conversation piece
Good stuff but I see MS are of the opinion ET is " as one the worst games ever made due to horrible gameplay and game breaking bugs."
I've seen reviews of it and its not that bad, frustrating perhaps but by no means unplayable.
$500 for an squashed ET carts that may not work? Wow! That's certainly unexpected, particularly given the "fame" of the game.Â
Some crazy people in the world..
Quote from: "zapiy"Some crazy people in the world..

The items I had in my watch list ended last night.
You'll be astounded at some of the prices they went for. One E.T was £905.60 ($1425). Incredible!
So, the lucky bidder will have a nice new game land on their doorstep soon.....
Sod it, its their money. Its not even a good game lol
I'm starting to wonder if all these sales will go through or if some of the buyers will back out. There can't be that many people willing to spend that much money for trash, can there?
Am I the only one who thinks they're not buying a game here, they're buying a slice of history.
Much like buying a fossil won't get you anything useable, one of these carts is just an interesting ornament with an unusual tale behind it.
Sure, it seems pricey to us, but to some collectors, that isn't expensive for something that may not turn up again for years once the initial sales pass.
I don't think you're on your own. I would assume everyone realises the buyer won't be playing this and its been purchased for its history.
Its still a game being bought for a relatively obscene amount never the less.
It's the irony that amuses me. These games were buried because nobody wanted to buy them, yet 30 years and a bit of folklore later..........
The documentary about this has been available on Xbox live for a while now (I keep forgetting to watch it), but for everyone who doesn't have that service and has wanted to see it, looks like you will be able to soon

February 2nd it will be available on various VOD services http://ca.ign.com/articles/2015/01/20/a ... n-february (http://ca.ign.com/articles/2015/01/20/atari-game-over-documentary-heads-to-vod-in-february)
Cool, good to know.Â
Great news, amazed it took this long, even with an Xbox live account I was unable to connect? , maybe this time I'll finally get to see what all the hype was
I saw some of it while at CGE in Vegas. It's a cool documentary. I've marked the date on my calendar so I can look it up in Google Play and Amazon. I may be able to watch it free through Prime on Amazon.
Hey guys. I only joined this forum today and have only just caught up on this thread but in case any of you are wondering I purchased one of the Atari Dig cartridges. I won't say how much for lol but it was a lot. Here's a photo of it if any of you are interested and also a link to the YouTube video I did of me getting the cartridge.

Quote from: "TrekMD"OK, I was going to ask how much you paid but now I won't.
I was thinking the same thing, but I gotta know...how much?
@Retro_Raiden ?
It was enough to make a dent in my bank account balance lol. For the game £143.57 + £39.62 postage so £183.19 overall. I know it's crazy but it's the most unique item in my collection and I am never selling it.
That's a lot of £££££$$$$$$$$$$$$$!
Wow! I guess they were wearing a mask when they took the money? But its something of an exceptional piece of video game heritage never to be possibility equaled ever again, cherish it and show it of with extreme pride!!!
I don't think its toooo bad! Considering some 'rare' games on ebay go for thousands, and it is a piece of history, nice one enjoy it!
Yeah I did say to myself this is nothing compared to some of the "rare" game prices out there which are in the thousands for some stupid reason but what's crazy is I'm trying to get another as more have popped up on ebay lol.
Its a lot of cash but like above... its real history and i am sure it will grow in value.. Nice to see someone that picked some up though.
It sure is plenty of money but, as has been noted, it is peanuts compared to what some games go for and this is indeed a piece of history.Â
My wife would still disown me lol..
Quote from: "zapiy"My wife would still disown me lol.. :24:
Just so you guys know there are more on ebay right, cartridge only but there going for a lot less then what I paid for my one. I guess it's because everyone thought only a limited number of them were going on but I've been told another couple of hundred still need to be put onto ebay.

Here's the sellers page http://www.ebay.com/usr/tbhs575 (http://www.ebay.com/usr/tbhs575) Happy bidding!
That's quite a few Defender carts. Not too pricey right now.Â
If you are going to get one and you are in the UK the shipping cost will be around $50 which is around £33 so bare that in mind when you are bidding on one. Also contact the seller and mention that you are buying from the UK otherwise they might not do it. If you buy multiple carts he said they will try and put them all in the same box.
I thought I'd let you all know that the Atari: Game Over documentary is also now available on Netflix (at least in the US, not sure of other markets).
Guys! I neither admit nor deny buying a 2nd Atari Dig Cartridge tonight
Quote from: "Retro_Raiden"Guys! I neither admit nor deny buying a 2nd Atari Dig Cartridge tonight :24:
Yes alright! I did it. I brought another one and it was much cheaper then the first one I brought lol
Cool on both counts.Â
It aint cool on my bank balance lol. Good bye money.Â
I believe Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark said it best...
"Look at this. It's worthless - ten dollars from a vendor in the street. But I take it, I bury it in the sand for a thousand years, it becomes priceless. Like the Ark."Â
...er like E.T. cartridges.
I remember playing this game at my Aunt's growing up and thinking:
"What am I actually supposed to be doing in this game??? If the goal is to continuously and inexplicably fall into pits and get angry, then I seem to be doing quite well. Sheesh... I think I'll play some Yars Revenge or Solar Fox instead."
At the same time, it would be kinda cool to have one of these. :-)
In case anyone wanted to see the latest Atari Dig Cartridge soon to be in my collection. I've already paid for it, I'm just waiting for it to turn up in the post now. It's gonna take a few weeks like the previous one did but it is coming from the US to the UK and customs like to take there time on this end.
Ah, a Defender cartridge. They had a number of those on sale. Cool.Â
The nerdyness in me keeps growing. The Defender cartridge plus the Swordquest Earthworld game has probably got to be the pride and joy of my collection now.
Just a query, regarding all the cartridges and others they've dug up, does the payment go to Atari or the state or some sort of fund? I'm just curious to where the money goes too? Or are these private sales to individuals?, who's getting the cash for all this, as I'm sure they this stuff coming out of the ears?

It's the city of Alamogordo where the landfill is located that is selling these. Where the money is going ultimately though I don't know.
I'm sure it's going into the City's pocket.Â
Are they selling for alot?
The prices have varied from what I fan see. Right now Centipede carts are seeling for $50. Here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/usr/tbhs575 (http://www.ebay.com/usr/tbhs575)
I picked up a Defenders cartridge with manuals and no box for £55 (roughly $80) but the first game I got was Swordquest EarthWorld which was boxed and all that but i paid just under £200 for that one. The price is varying a lot. It is depending on loose cartridge or in the box.
Picking one up as a historical piece is one thing, but paying $100 for Centipede has both me and my wife slack-jawed! I get it, though.. you get a neat little certificate. I remember watching a video about the secret dump of all the left over E.T. stuff. I guess they felt somewhat responsible for the crash, although I never thought any of those games were really that bad. More like a challenge in programming.Â
"Hey Tod? Ya know that game everyone's throwing quarters into down the street that's full of chips and everything?"
"Yeah?"
"Can you do that in under 4K?"
:21:
I really dig Activision and what they stood for back when Dave Crane co-founded it. Programmers were being cut out of the credits, so to speak. To bad they didn't dump a bunch of games in the dead of night!?!Â
