Fans of action/RPGs can look forward to saving keys to open doors and worrying about someone shooting the food this summer when Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment releases its 'Gauntlet' reboot on Steam, launching a new series of Atari/Midway remakes.

Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios (Swedish makers of the, well, 'Gauntlet-like 'Magicka'), the reboot maintains the "four characters, four sets of strengths and weaknesses" philosophy from the 1985 original: the Warrior is strongest, the Elf is fastest, the Valkyrie is best at range, the Wizard rocks the magic. Even if you somehow missed the original game, this character differentiation should be familiar as it has become ingrained in game design over the years.

The biggest addition is procedural generation of dungeons. Due to memory constraints, the original game and its myriad sequels all had a limit to the number of floor layouts; once it was reached, the game either ended (as in the NES and Genesis versions) or just started to loop. The new 'Gauntlet' will generate its levels based on meeting certain criteria, such as having an exit, X number of keys and locked doors, Y number of monster generators and so on. While procedural generation can't create an infinite number, it can get close enough to keep you interested.

The game, which will include both online and local co-op, will also support Steam OS and Steam Machines when they're released later this year. Neither the press release nor trailer mention it, but you would have to think a home console release would make sense considering how well the console versions of the similar-looking/-playing 'Diablo III' performed. Plus, you know, it's 'Gauntlet.'

WBIE says 'Gauntlet' will be the first in its new "WB Games Vault" series of digital releases. As companies rise, fall and get liquidated, it's hard to keep track of who owns what without getting a headache, but keep this in mind: thanks to its purchase of a large chunk of the Midway catalog in 2009, WBIE owns not only such familiar Midway properties as 'Mortal Kombat,' but also the Williams and Atari Games arcade catalogs that include such classics as 'Defender,' 'Sinistar,' 'Robotron,' 'Marble Madness' and 'A.P.B.'

I was reading about this earlier today. Sounds great, but why on earth would they only release it on PC? If they add console versions I'm all over this! Also I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with some of the other franchises they own.  I'd love a new Defender  :63:

I think its cost - its just cheaper and less of a risk to release on PC only - I'm still waiting for Torchlight 2!

Wey hey, like many of you here, I played this in the arcades, on 8-bit and now I can do it all over again on PC :4:

Sorry to be a party pooper, but I wasn't blown away by the footage. Graphically, it appears as a 360 arcade  game, back when they were pumping those out like mad. I don't know how to describe it, other than a sterile, canned 3d graphical style similar to many many other quickly produced 360 arcade games. And as far as Gauntlet goes as a genre, let's face it, the Diablo series is filling that niche quite well.

I think all these remakes and reboots are just getting on my nerves. Especially with the movie industry.

While I avoid most remakes anymore (since they aren't actually good) I am sold on this. I'll be mumbling the whole time that I want an arcade build but whatever. :65:
