It can't look any worse than the ugly George formans grill of the ps3.... Anyway a pitiful attempt by Sony to try and steal any limelight before the xbox reveal ....

From what i've seen so far of the Xbox 1 reveal, they need'nt have bothered, lol.
Limp showcases from both parties.
Lol, i actually like the minimalistic look of the Xbox One but yeah Sony did try it on.. Fair play though..
Isn't a case of "the law of diminishing returns" with both the new Xbox and PS? There is not really any "wow factor" with either system. Compare to the old Xbox 360 which I suppose the online gaming and Xbox Arcade and indie stuff were its niche. With the PS3 then I think the Blu Ray drive helped out a bit to sell it. Plus, there were some of the technical improvements for the games on both platforms. The latest specifications for both new machines doesn't exactly excite people much.Â

Suppose technically, you can trace the roots of what's being offered up with PS4/Xbox One back to the late 90's with Web TV, company initally saw set top boxes from likes of Sony and Phillips in '96, MS took notice, aquired company in '97, poured millions into it.
MS also signed a $5 Billion deal with AT+T to ensure their set top boxes would be running WINCE, then you've WINCE running in the Dreamcast (most developers bypassed it mind).
Xbox only came about as MS did'nt want Sony stealing the position under the tv of 1 box for all your entertainment needs.
CD-i, CDTV 3DO etc all tried to be the box that would do it all, PACE were going to turn the Dreamcast into set top box, NUON wanted it's chipset on DVD players, Sony had Play TV with PS3....
Maybe Sony and MS see Apple/Google as the 'threat' these days rather than each other?.I'd hazzard a guess that MS has taken it's gamble based on it's own findings from XBL, that 360 owners were spending more time online with films etc than gaming?.
I find it utterly bizzare that on last issue of EDGE i looked at, Home VR is on front page and being touted once more as the next big thing.Hasbro, Atari, Sega etc all poured lot of time and money into systems of their own, hardware was too primitive and fear of law suits too high, but yes, the 'wow' factor is (sadly) missing when the same old hardware concepts are dragged out, game developers are using lens flare as a key point of their next gen game engines, it all feels so very familar.

Yeah, that does look likely. MS and Sony seeing Apple with Apple TV and Itunes as their likely competitor. They're probably looking at things like Lovefilm and Netflix as well. It does look likely that the new consoles will be referred to as "multimedia hubs" rather than gaming consoles.Â
Speaking of gaming, are there any recent gaming announcements for these platforms? Anything to excite anybody?Â
Well after both launch shows, I'm leaning back towards the PS4 at this stage, though E3 may change depending on the games lineups.
Main reasons I was annoyed at PS3 -
Triggers slanting wrong way on pad, ps4 pad has rectified this.
Mandatory game installs on ps3, so annoying and awful for a games console, both next gen look to install as you play, but still a few minutes wait at least I would have thought.
Slow bluray drive on ps3 that caused install and texture problems Skyrim, bo2 etc, both next gen have faster bluray drive that should eliminate most problems.
The main problems seem to fixed from the ps3, whilst online for the new Xbox will still cost, no secondhand copies without rebuying on Xbox one.... Games aside for me at the minute the PS4 will be in my living room come Xmas.

Skyrim proved to be an absolute mare on PS3 as out of all 3 systems (PS3/PC+360), the PS3's 'split RAM' made it the most constricted system for such a memory intensive game (and here's why i brought up the issue of RAM in earlier posts :-) ).
The 360 had 512 Meg.of unified Memory, which was usable to developers as system or graphics memory, do with it as you see fit.The PS3 however, had same amount of RAM, but split it with 256 Meg going for the System Memory and 256 for the graphics (that's why we never saw cross-chat in games-if developers wanted it, that would have meant even less memory avaiable for graphics etc).
Even Sony's most talented, in house teams behind PS3 exclusives like Uncharted series, Killzone 2+3 and God of war had the odd moan at the frustrations it caused at times in having to code smarter to find best solution around this.
This gen has been a frustrating one at times:I was really pleased to hear i had the option of installing games to my 360 HDD (as had'nt had then, nor had since, any drive issues or Red Rings or E74 messages, wanted to keep it that way), so anything to reduce strain on drive, bloody great, but the Avatar shite that came with it? Fuck no, just let me keep the 'blades' dash, but with option to instal to HDD.No chance.
Sony:sloth like online, yes, it's free, but by god PSN is slow, that needs to chance with PS4 and make bloody sure PS4 works with BT Home Hubs as well Sony you twats!.also, i raged at having forced downloads if i wanted to play PS3 games online, that were putting in Move+3D TV support, niether of which i was interested in, but was'nt given the option to DL patch, it was just avaiable.Shit like that needs to change.
PSN hack:At the time? outraged, not just with Sony, but my bank, F-ing U/S!!! the pair of them, but since then? any company that has'nt been hacked? seemed like a different company every other day at 1 time, so sins not forgiven, but in hindsight, fact so many others fell victim after Sony made me wake up to my online habbits, so lessons learned all round.
The worst part of this gen: Studio closures (and the games they were working on):
MS canned a bloody promising Freelancer sequel on 360, no-one stepped in to save Bizzare Creations (and they were working on Blur II-gutted!), Sony closed Sony Liverpool (and we never saw PS2 or PS3 G-Police or Colony Wars), Zipper Interactive went, just when they seemed to have upped their game, Age Of Empires Studio closed by MS, right after Halo Wars came out.So much talent just told, sorry, last game really is your last.
(split this into 2 posts):
Also, WTF was with this U.C.C 'drive' from Sony this generation (User Created Content).Little Big Planet (Awful Waste Of Time in my eyes, lol), i could'nt seem to move for...tried PS3 version, still have PSP ver. (picked up as part of the welcome back package), saw some great looking video's of stuff online that clever folks had done, but hello? the basic platforming elements ie controls and response times, felt more 'wolly' than any of Jeff Minters jumpers!.Creativity is fantastic, but lets get the basics right eh Sony?
Tried a good few User created missions in Infamous II-Really had to search for the diamonds in the rough there mind and nominated a Gravity Crash map mate of mine had designed (and I got a trophy for that? bizzare), but honestly, track+map creators been around since the 8 Bit era, so nothing new here.Is this 'push' to continue on PS4 i wonder?.
MS said the achivements/gamer score will carry through onto Xbox One, so i expect more 'awards' for:playing online, putting game on hold whilst you go for a piss etc etc, but i've no idea what my gamer score is on either PS3 or 360, so that's not a selling point-long as games retain the online leaderboards, so i can rub friends faces in it on the (very) few times i bet their scores, i'm happy.
The Blu ray VS DVD thing was odd as well-you had developers going:Wahhhhhh Blu ray too slow, but we can fit all our mega-textures and Dolby 5.1 shit and 3 billion different text files on just 1 disc, plus all the DLC for Game Of The Year editions on it, but read speed is too slow.....
Then when it was turn of DVD it was wahhhh, we've had to cut levels/case files/modes etc as no space MS you bastards give us more room, we're having to put the extra stuff on as DLC or leave it out and do multiple disc versions and you charge us more for those and our cutscenes are lower quality, but...ohhh, it's lovely and fast, but look how much room your security codecs are taking up, wahhh.
So, Blu ray+DVD were, like developers as the kids, the disc formats their folks driving them to the zoo:
Are we there yet? can't you go any faster?, i'm bored, MUM!!!! Timmy kicked me!, DAD!!!! Suzy is a cow!, in the end? both wanted the to spend a penny and threw up on the way home.LOL
Meanwhile Hideo K. just had the 'mother' of all wanks over just how much shite he could fit into MGS 4, enough with the god damn eggs Hideo!.
@Katz:Latest 'annoucement' for PS4 is that developer of PS3 Dead Nation and Super Stardust, is working on 2 PS4 games at the moment, ready for this:
1 is PS4 version of Super Stardust (which i'm sure will look bloody nice, but then so it did on PS3, PSP+Vita!) and 1 'other' game (Dead Nation II? lol)
Also:Remedy said NO Alan wake II as they could'nt 'secure funding' for a full sequel (and did'nt want to do some half-baked cash in) as despite the original selling over 3 Million copies, early sales were very slow/dissapointing.
Ohh and there's a new NFS game out on both, but that's like annoucing day following night.
Kinect 2.0 is coming for Windows.
Dying Light (new game by Dead Island crowd) out on PS4/Xbox One (as well as PS3/360+PC)-said to be a 1st person survival horror, with a Mirrors Edge style 'free running' mechanic.Promises vast open world, with day-night cycle, gasp! never seen that on anything since the 8/16 Bit days, lol.
@Katz-There's also:
Kinect Fitness.
Thief (Reboot)
B.F. 4
A.C.4
Watch Dogs
Destiny (of which i saw latest trailer of today and still have NO fecking idea what this game is about and it's raised zero interest from myself).
And Shadow warrior remake, all these 'confirmed' to be headed Xbox One way.
PS4 wise:
We have a WW2 F2P MMO called ABC, lol, no be serious, it's called War Thunder.
There's also the (timed?) exclusive of The Witness-think of a modern day Myst (know Laird is a Myst fan, sure he'll soon get that PS4 pre-order in, lol).

There is more chance of me buying an NES!

Solid game mechanics and quality single player would be nice, but I think LBP, ModNation Racers, Minecraft, etc offer so much as a creative sandbox that I can't complain too much about the basics.
My kids haven't bothered playing through the single player modes on any of them... they're not very good games. But, they'll spend hours creating their own levels just for the sake of creating. Edutainment? Pretty inspiring to see what they come up with. 'Playing' through their levels is just a bonus... the 'game' is being creative.

Forgot Mod Nation Racers-had that as well on PSP as part of the welcome back stuff from Sony. Then there was the craft building stuff in 360 Nuts N Bolts, but again never did much for myself.
No more teasing...here is the new look for the PS4...

So ugly, black slabs are this seasons look then? LOl.where's my grill, or fan heater or pie maker looking consoles? still, better than some of the Fisher Price looking consoles from a few years back, but does no-one do sexy looking hardware these days? that Panasonic Game Cube with built in DVD player or Sega's MD/MCD portable the CDX, these babies had style.
Yeah I have to agree, not the best looking console ever. Both the PS4 and Xbox one look like something from the early 90's! Oh well, as long as they work that's all that really matters.
Saw this posted on G+ and thought I'd share it...

I see Sony once again modelled their console on a George Foreman grill
(http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z280/mrkizza/PS4_zpsa9daf5d8.jpg)
LOLÂ At least they are not as constipated as Microsoft when it comes to how they run their consoles!
Find it funny that Sony blares to the world no drm restrictions, now it's come to light it's upto 3rd party's if they want to add it...not quite 'no' restrictions then...same old Sony, will prob change their minds too after Xmas, check the small print!

This is SONY..you know same crew who quietly said actually guys, it's, um, more like, sniff 66 Million Polygons per second on PS2, um, not that 75 Million we originally said (and both figures were utter crap) and that Killzone 2 PS3 reveal footage was running on real PS3 dev.kits, honest guv, then turns out it was 'conceptual footage'.
Technically they could turn around and say we were talking about Sony Games on a Sony console, which so far they have'nt U-turned on, but it'd be a wafer-thin defence.
Still look on bright side, it's given the hackers 2 sets of DRM crap to gun for :-) who's 1st Ladies? the MS DRM or that used by Sony 3rd parties on PS4?
I pre ordered my PS4 yesterdayÂ

It wasn't easy either! Tried two online stores first but they were both sold out already. Then drove to three different stores before I found one that was still taking pre orders. Can't wait!
