Title: Saturn -> SNES controller
Post by: Vyothric on April 16, 2013, 18:31:50 PM
Not having the hands of a 5 year old, I find the D-Pad too small, uncomfortable and inaccurate on SNES controllers. The Saturn controller seemed like a good replacement as it has enough buttons, including the shoulder buttons and most importantly, a good D-Pad.

I happened to have a spare SNES (3rd party) controller so I cut out the middle bit, then also cut out the middle of a Saturn controller. Then wired the buttons to the right traces. The wiring is a complete mess. Making sure the wires didn't get in the way of the button contacts was awkward and my concentration just wasn't there. I'm not sure about the button layout anyway so if I change it I'll tidy it up.

At the moment I have it so A (Saturn) = A (SNES), B = Y, C = B, X = X, Y = Select. That's probably going to sound confusing. My preferred controller layout is Streets of Rage style... C = Jump, B = Action. So, I wired it so Super Mario Bros. worked like that. Some games are different though, so I may need a switch. I tried out Ninja Gaiden and rather annoyingly A = Jump and C = action.

Excellent idea!

I think the SNES pad is crap too, this will make the machine much more bearable!  :16:

Liking that, been thinking about hacking my broken 3DO pad to take other joypads via 9 pin connector to the contact pads.

That is great! I would love to play Pokémon on the N64 with a controller like that :113:
