We were talking in the chatbox about this so I thought it would be cool to start a topic on it.
So what was your biggest mistake when it comes to gaming?
Mine was selling my Saturn and the 50+ games I had for it back in the day for what I seem to remember was about £300 (the year was 1997) and then just spending all the money on going out and getting pissed with my mates.
Mine was dismantling a Jupiter ACE in 1988 to see how it worked.
They fetch £300 now

Whoops!
Buying the PC-FX?Â

Plodding through hentai adventures and dating sims with a fan translation/faq? No thanks.
After the awesome PC Engine/Turbo line, the PC-FX was a disgrace by comparison. Even the 5 or 6 action games released for PC-FX were disappointing and definitely not worth the prices they sell for now.
Playing an MMO is easily the stupidest gaming mistake I've made. So much time wasted it still really bothers me everytime I think about it.
Giving my entire collection of 2600 games and my light sixer to a cousin when I left for college. The console did not survive but I was able to salvage some games.Â
I gave away a 2600 back in the 80's. Never was able to get any of the games back. King Kong and Threshold were two I still have not replaced.
In the late 80's I had a chance to buy a friends Colecovison and Adam computer add-on. I passed on that. When I asked later, it had been sold.
Not getting a Jag CD Console earlier before all the bandwagon seller jumped in to hike the price.
I traded in my mint copy of Snatcher on Sega CD at the local game shop for probably around $15.00 towards some other game back in the day. The game doesn't have a lot of replay value and I didn't have a lot of money for games back then. I used to do that a lot but this one really stings cause of how much it's worth now, plus I'd really like to be able to play the game now!
Lending my Megadrive, Mega CD, 60 Cartrdges and 20 CD games (including Flink, Snatcher and Dragons Lair) to a family that moved into my friends house. Only to find out that my friend had lost his job, hadn't been paying the mortgage and my mate and the family had all been evicted and theyd taken all my stuff with them never to be seen again (the family not my mate)Â
Picking up a NES pad in Boots back in the day. My hands still hurt.
ok I'll bite lol... I'm sure Laird is wondering where I am with mine lol
so my biggest mistake is PROBABLY when I was 16/17 and I had not long been bought the Saturn (16th Bday May '98)
I already had the Master System, Mega Drive, Mega CD, Jaguar etc and plenty of games for all 4, probably 5 Jag, 10 MS, 5 MCD and 20 MD games as a rough estimate
so anyway my mistake is that, before I got the Dreamcast in October '99, maybe the January before, I decided, thanks to my Brother showing me one, that I was interested in buying a PS1... but I wasn't earning any money at the time, or not enough anyway, so I thought the cheapest and quickest way to get one would be to sell EVERYTHING except my Saturn and its games and my handhelds, at CashConverter, and trade it all for a second hand PS1
BIG MISTAKE....
I think at most, I got 10 games for the PS1 and although I did enjoy playing games like Armored Core, Abes odyssee, Metal Gear Solid and a few others I always regretted selling the other systems for such shit amounts of money and all I got for it was the big ugly original Playstation with 1 controller and a couple games
thankfully in late 99 I got my beloved Dreamcast and probably 4-5 years later I began buying back the old systems I had sold and I am now happy to say that I have bigger collections for all of them than I did before!!
My biggest mistake was when I bought the Neo Geo CD some months after it was released for about 50.000pts (300€) when I could have bought a new AES for 20.000pts (120€).
Back then I was convinced that the CD system was going to replace the AES but I couldn´t be more wrong. There were also a lot of offers of brand new carts at more or less the CD prices...
One day I walked a flea market (do you use that term in English? A street market for used stuff?) without any money. Didn't expect to find anything spectaular. Big, BIG mistake.
In a cardboard box, together with old VCRs and toasters there was lying a Sega SG-1000. A freakin' SG-1000, right here in Germany! The seller had no idea what it was, and it may have been defective since it didn't look like it had been taken care for much, but even then... for 5 Euros I could have gotten it. And even a broken SG-1000 is a nice item for a Sega fan, especially since it was never released here and is not easy to come by.
I'll still be telling my grandchildren of that dreadful day.
Yes, we say flea market tooÂ

Wow that is a real bummer! SG1000's are certainly pretty rare these days!
Buying a 3DO to play Way of the Warrior. I was a lot younger back then, to be fair. That, and it only cost me $40 over eBay.
To clarify, it's more playing Way of the Warrior I regret, not buying the 3DO. I kind of like the thing, honestly, and if I had the cash and the space, I'd probably buy another one.
Selling my US SNES back in 2005 or so to buy car parts. The car is long gone now due to being a father and the SNES has cost me a fair bit to replace. I do think I have a mostly better collection than before though.
I parted with some perfectly good money for a barcode battler. What a complete and utter waste of cash.

I remember those dumb things.
My beans beat your can of cokeÂ
Buying a launch MCD for £270 when i was on low wages and having to wait ages for the games that really used the hardware to arrive (Batman Returns, Terminator S.E, Final Fight S.E, Thunderhawk etc).
Selling SOR 3 MD+Snatcher MCD for £5 each!.
Selling my Jaguar, along with signed copy of Tempest 2000.

Those were some really painful mistakes!
The MCD? blame the hype.....Video preview (VHS tape) given away with Mean Machines had it sold to me.
Selling of SOR 3-hated it, big let down after SOR 2, as for Snatcher? never saw what the fuss was about, played it again recently and....nope, still don't 'get it'.
I'll also add:Passing up chance to buy MINT copies of Saturn Deep Fear £50 and P.D.Saga £75 many years back, as i thought i'd wait until they dropped in price...
a big mistake for me recently is that I should've bought Castlevania SOTN cheap when it was out and went into bargain buckets at the time. Now people are asking for stupid amounts.
I also really regret mission out on Atari Karts for the Jag, I never knew about it when I was younger and avoided buying it because of bad reviews but played it at RV2012.5 this year and thought it was great fun
this gen: buying a Wii (even if only for the kids)
retro: trusting the fly-by-night seller of a Mega-CD that it worked and paying £60 for essentially a plastic box.Â

Damn! You are going to hate me but I picked up my Mega Drive & Mega CD 1 for £35 including 5 games, oh and it was all boxedÂ
Letting my brother sell his Colecovision and a couple of games and not keeping it when I had the chance. Also selling a working NES, a lot of games and a nice games box a couple of years ago along with a boxed C64 because we needed some money.
Letting my missus clear out an old cupboard and never realised there were a couple of collectible SNES titles in there.
I won't list because I may cry

ha ha, no don't hate you - but not fond of the guy who ripped me off. Still, 10 years collecting and it's the first and only time I've really been fleeced. Bound to happen every now and then.
I once bought a load of games from Game only to find they hadn't put the CD's in. I rang and went mental and thankfully they believed me and when I went back in to collect the discs they gave me a free game to say sorry.
Selling my complete UK NGPC collection and some rare beaniesÂ

That's a pretty bad one, I would really like to get a NGPC one day.
