Denial forum member Victragic has recently completed a homebrew version of the Atari 2600 classic Pitfall! for the Commodore VIC-20. The original game, by the legendary David Crane, was written for a 4k cartridge - so his 20k version is quite bloated in comparison. The Atari had some hardware advantages over the VIC-20, and the game was clearly written with the 2600 hardware in mind so some compromises had to be made.

The player must maneuver a character (Pitfall Harry) through a maze-like jungle in an attempt to recover 32 treasures in a 20-minute time period. Along the way, he must negotiate numerous hazards, including pits, quicksand, rolling logs, fire, rattlesnakes, scorpions, and crocodiles. Harry may jump over or otherwise avoid these obstacles by climbing, running, or swinging on vines. Treasure includes gold and silver bars, diamond rings, and bags of money. Under the jungle there is a tunnel which Harry can access through ladders found at various points. Travelling though the tunnel moves forward three screens at a time, which is necessary in order to collect all the treasures within the time limit. However, the tunnels are filled with dead-ends blocked by brick walls, forcing the player to return to the surface at one of the ladders, and try to find a way around again, thus wasting time. The tunnels also contain scorpions, which can harm Harry.

There are some minor graphical glitches and a bit of slowdown but this was sadly unavoidable. The game also only works on PAL machines at the present time. You will also need a minimum of a 16k machine to play it on real hardware, other wise the game can be played on all good emulators. If you want to know more on this project then you can read the thread over at VIC-20 Denial. You can watch a video of the game in action below!

Agree. As a fan of the Vic-20 it is good to see another title added to the library. But for me the 2600 version of Pitfall will always be the best.

A solid effort on the game. :113:
