Title: ScouseMouse - Retro Gamer
Post by: ScouseMouse on August 06, 2017, 18:24:06 PM
Hi guys, my name is Paul and I just wanted to let you know that I recently started a Youtube channel. I'll mostly be playing retro games, with the emphasis probably being around NES, SNES and PC classics.

Here's a link if you want to check it out. Any feedback would be great as I'm really new to Youtube. Thanks in advance!

Evening guys,

I recently started a new series on my channel playing what was and is one of my favourite PC games of all time, Lands of Lore. If you don't recognise the game, it's a classic medieval fantasy RPG, and if that doesn't entice you enough, it's introduced and voiced by the epic voice of Patrick Stewart.

Part 3 will be released tomorrow at 8pm GMT. I release 1 new video, always at 8pm GMT, 7 days per week.

Part 1 - The Ruby of Truth

Part 2 - King Richard's Elixir

Cheers for watching. I know what you mean, sometimes it's nice to go and play like a NES or SNES game, something you can complete in an hour.

Anyone who has played the game will remember how long the Draracle's cave went on for, it's the only part of the game that felt like a bit of a drag for me. Thankfully a bit of editing makes it less painful viewing :)

Episode 3 - We meet the Draracle, finally say goodbye to his cave and go on the hunt for King Richard's elixir.

Thanks guys.

FYI - my videos are scheduled to automatically upload, so there is always 1 brand new video at 8pm (UK time) every single day.

Today's video was one from my Tricky Trials series where the viewers challenge me to complete parts of games that they find really hard... hopefully so I can offer some advice or tips and show how it's done. Today's request was asking me to do Down The Tubes from Earthworm Jim on the SNES

So I've never played Chrono Trigger ever and all I really know about it is that it's supposed to be the best RPG ever... and I love RPGs.

I really wanna play it but would you want to watch me playing the game on the channel for the first time, bearing in mind it'll be my first time experiencing everything about the game so I'll know nothing?

Hey folks, would you mind sparing 1 minute to help me out

I'm doing my first ever live stream in a couple of days so I'm running a poll on Twitter for you to vote on which game I play.

I'd really appreciate some votes so it isn't decided by about 2 people :p and if you fancy retweeting it to get word out that's even better :D

Just need to click the link and pick an option :)

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the votes and follows guys. Super Mario World is smashing it at the mo, with 78% of the 40 votes so it looks like that's gonna be our first stream. I'll be starting from about 10pm UK time (to make sure my kids are asleep) and it'll be either Tuesday or Wednesday but I'll confirm on the day.

The 8pm video tonight that just went up is the next installment of Lands of Lore. This time our search for ingredients for the elixir takes us to the Urbish Mines, and I'm sure anyone that's played the game before will remember the guardian at the door... The Lahrkon

Hey all, we're gonna be finishing off Super Mario World on the live stream tomorrow night at 10:30pm same as last time. I should be able to wrap it all up tomorrow, the star roads, the special roads, the whole shabang. Then we're gonna need a new game to play!

I'll actually give out the right link this time too ;) which now includes my new URL so is much easier to remember.

https://www.youtube.com/c/ScouseMouse/live

I'm leaving it up to another Twitter poll to decide which game we play next time (I'll do both at some point anyway)

P.S. I've got a video planned that should be going up soon as a thank you to everyone for helping me get to 100 subs. It's probably a really nerdy idea but I hope a few people think it's cool.

Thanks Zapiy. I understand not all the games I do are gonna be to everyone's taste so that's fine. I think that's one of the good things about me playing loads of old games, they tend to only take a couple of hours to finish so I'm doing new games allll the time, so even if there isn't anything you like right now, there might be in a couple of days etc. and before long I should have a biggg catalogue of old games people can scan through to see what they like.

In other news... I decided to try and step outside my comfort zone and sing a song as a thank you for helping me reach 100 subscriber

It's been ages since I've uploaded one of these so I dunno if anyone on here even knows what they are.

I do a series called Tricky Trials where I get viewers to send me challenges to complete, little parts of games that they've always found really hard. It could be a really tough boss like Emerald Weapon in FF7 or a really tough level like Turbo Tunnel from Battletoads, then I do a video completing it and hopefully offering a few tips on how to do it yourself, and I give that person a shout out for suggesting it.

Today someone asked me to do the first boss on Streets of Rage 3 (Shiva) on the hardest difficulty.

Here's my latest video folks...

It's the very first episode of a brand new series of one of my absolute favourite games of all time, Little Big Adventure.

If you haven't seen it before, it really is one of the PC greats imo... great story, great music, great gameplay, some feel funny and quirky moments. I've never seen another game like it (not counting it's sequel lol)

If you don't mind I'd love some feedback on my commentary, I think it's my weakest point, but I'm obviously trying to get better and better with each video and I feel like this is one is better than a lot of my older ones.

Hey hey, I'm really excited to share the first episode of my BLIND play through of Dark Souls.

Good start :) Hope you stick with it till the end. I konw you're trying to play it blind, but there is one thing you should know. By not choosing the Master Key as your Gift at the character creation screen, you made the game way more difficult! You might even want to start over if that's as far as you've got. It really makes a big difference.

Bloody hell, that's a bit annoying. Does it really have that big an impact? Fwiw, I have only recorded 1 episode so yeah what you see is as far as I've got so far, and yes I am going to stick with it and go all the way..

It unlocks doors that normally wouldn't open till later in the game. Sometimes much later. It will mean you can wander into areas where the enemies will be way too difficult for you, but it will also create shortcuts and give you better equipment and items. I've played through the game multiple times and I've never done it without that key. You don't have to have it but it sure helps.

I wasn't sure what to expect going in, I know it's reallllly popular but sometimes when there's massive hype it can end up being a bit of a let down but I really love it. It's just a nice simple fun game with amazing music. I enjoyed it so much I ended up recording episode 2 at the same time as well.

Lol yeah, two people have pointed that out to me, and you're now the third. Shows how much of a noob I am, I literally just forgot they even existed. Can you use them pretty liberally then, and you'll get more quite easily?

You're also gonna see me struggle through episode 3 too because I recorded it at the same time as 2. It makes a lot more sense now why it felt insanely hard. I kill my 2nd boss in the next episode as well and it felt really unfair that I had to battle through tons of baddies AND then face a boss straight after it without a bonfire or any way to top up my energy. It does mean I spent an hour mastering how to get through that section without losing energy lol.

That's actually really impressive that you made it past the second boss without using Estus! Every time you rest at a bonfire the number of uses gets restored. You start with 5 but you can double it right away. Use a Humanity and then rest at a bonfire and become human again. Use another Humanity and then kindle the bonfire to get another 5 flasks.

I did have to use 1 Divine Blessing (the useless gift I picked) which is basically a healing potion but yeah not knowing about the Estus Flasks definitely forced me to get through most of that area flawlessly so I had as much energy as possible for the boss... only took about 50+ tries lol.

Does the game teach you about all this stuff? I've got those humanity things but I didn't know about turning human, is that permanent? Are there any advantages (apart from 5 extra flasks)? Are there any downsides/would I ever wanna not be human?

Sorry for all the questions but seems like there's SO much to learn and the game aint taught me it yet
Title: Re: ScouseMouse - Retro Gamer

I don't mind the questions. There was another guy on this forum when I first played the game and he really helped me understand how things worked. I would have been lost without him.

They really don't tell you anything about the game other than the controls. Everything else you have to figure out yourself. Reading the descriptions of items really helps figure out what they do.

When you die you lose all consumed humanity (the ones showing in the top left corner) along with your souls. If you get back to your blood stain before dying again then you get it back, but you will be back in hollow form. There are certain benefits to being human and having a lot of humanity but I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point. Every new bonfire you come across has to be kindled so that it will give you 10 estus instead of 5. You have to be in human form to kindle so if you are hollow it takes 2 humanity per bonfire. So if you consume all the humanity you have and then die twice and lose it all, you won't have any left to kindle. Always a good idea to leave some in your inventory.

Loved the part where you rolled off the bridge during the boss fight lol! I'm sure everyone who has played the game has done that at some point though, and if you stand in the right spot you can even get the boss to fall off the ledge killing him instantly. There's also a ladder right beside the door when you go through the fog gate that takes you up to where the two guys with the crossbows are. Taking them out before the boss appears make it a bit easier. Looking forward to the next part. :)

I've nearly finished Sonic Mania and The Lion King and I won't be adding new games in to replace them for a little while, just so I can focus on getting more episodes out of the other games (Dark Souls, Undertale and Little Big Adventure), plus I've got a Halloween thing I'm trying to record too!

Cheers TrekMD, I just finished uploading the final episode of the Lion King (I always try to keep ahead of myself) and that'll get published on Monday. It's a bit longer than I thought/than the other episodes cos I couldn't quite remember how long the game was so wasn't sure how to split it up, I probably should have done 1 extra level in episode 2 but oh well.

Cheers Trek, I'm glad someone likes it! lol. It always feels a bit of a shame when you do a game that you absolutely love and it doesn't get that much interest. I always knew going in it was pretty obscure though and probably wouldn't be hugely popular but I just love the game and hadn't played it for years.

You're not doing too bad, but there's two tips I have that should help. On the equipment screen you can change which items are in your quick slots. Put your estus in one slot and you don't have to keep opening your inventory to use it. For the spear guys, just kick them. They will stagger and drop their shield and be open for a hit.

Cool to see you figured out how to get the boar to kill itself in the fire. There's a lot of ways to cheese the game like that which can really help!

Cheers for the tips Shadow, I've got the Estus on my quick select now which helps.

I recorded 2 more episodes today and god I love this game! I honestly can't remember the last time I've played a game for the first time and enjoyed it this much where I just don't wanna stop playing it. Might have to go back as far as Oblivion when I had that feeling.

I won't spoiler the episodes too much, but they went pretty well, it was nice to make some solid progress and not be stuck on something for ages and I managed to take down another boss. Can't wait to play some more.

Omg, I've just found out this forum is still up and running. I know that sounds mad but I had a page bookmarked and it kept 404'ing me and for some reason I didn't think to search around a bit for a different part of the site.

I've done all sorts since I last posted! Still been uploading daily without fail and the channel is gathering some momentum now. Near the end of October I did a Halloween series going through the 'history of horror games', 1 new game per day for 7 days, incase you wanna check any we did...

NES - Fester's Quest
SNES - Zombies Ate My Neighbors
PS1 - Clock Tower
Gamecube - Resident Evil (remake)
Xbox 360 - Deadspace
PC - Alien:Isolation
Xbox One - Outlast 2

Since then we've finished Little Big Adventure, I've been ploughing through Dark Souls, (up to episode 22 now!) I started playing my favourite game of all time, FF7 (we're up to episode 11 of that) and I recently started playing Fortnite too.

I'm afraid I won't now Dreamcast Gamer cos I'm going in chronological order. Tonight is the last SNES game then it's on to Gamecube. If you're that way inclined though, I did do a full playthrough of Alex Kidd a while ago.

When you have time, try out Wonderboy In Monster Land, Shinobi, Rastan, Fantasy Zone, and The Ninja.  If you enjoy those then you'll probably love almost every game on the system as it's library is very high quality.

I watched your latest Dark Souls video last night. I guess I've never went back into that boss room a second time before, but even I didn't know about the duel Sanctuary Guardians! Real nice of the guys who tricked you into it lol.

As for your live stream on the weekend, there's one more boss in the DLC area that you missed plus there's another one deep down below Blight Town that you should try to get to. Looking forward to watching it. :)

Well done! Looking forward to your DS2 playthrough. It gets a lot of hate from some people but I think it's right up there with the first game as the best in the series. It feels different but it's a HUGE game and probably has twice as many bosses as the first game.

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed the series. Felt good to finally complete it although I am a bit sad it's over. Thankfully I've got Dark Souls 2 to get stuck in to now. I've heard it's very different but I was kinda hoping it would be tbh so that I could go back to feeling like a noob again, for me the most fun parts of DS1 were when I was struggling. Once I got a whopping Zweihander and got the hang of it, it started to feel a bit too easy.

Glad to hear DS2 is nice and big, I've heard the DLC is insane as well, really hard and frustrating. I got the Scholar of the First Sin version so it's included.

Watched both episodes last night. The reason you're finding it so difficult is because you keep choosing the hardest path lol. Like I said before, DS2 is almost an open world game and there are a ton of different paths to take and a lot of optional bosses. The Pursuer, The Ruin Sentinels, and the Gargoyles are all completely optional and could have been saved till you were leveled up a lot more.

But hey, your way makes watching much more entertaining! :P

Not sure if that's a good thing or not lol. I kinda feel like it might be good cos if I'm tackling all the hard areas then I should breeze through the easier ones... I'm really enjoying the challenge, I hope it does stay this hard throughout. I didn't realise there were all optional though! That's really weird, so do you not need to go to the Lost Bastille at all?

Without spoiling too much, there's another path to the Lost Bastille through No-Man's Wharf. If you go that way you don't have to fight any of those bosses that I mentioned and you can go straight through to Sinners Rise, which is the only reason you have to go to the Lost Bastille.

There's definitely some areas coming up that you will find much easier now that you got the hard stuff out of the way lol.

You won't get any hate from me for that statement. I flip back and forth all the time over which is my favourite between the first two games, but I generally lean towards DS2.

DS3 is the one I have a problem with. Still a great game but not nearly as good as the first two.

It's still good, but they messed with the formula too much. The main reason I like these games so much is because I can play through a big chunk of them in any order I want. If I want to go to a mid game area and boss at the very beginning of the first two games, I can. If I want to use a really powerful weapon that is found much later in the game, I can skip certain areas and race straight there and grab it early on in the game.

DS3 has none of that. It's extremely linear with only a couple branching paths along the way and you have very little choice in which order you play through the areas. It's still good but just not the same. Still looking forward to seeing what you think of it when you get there. :)

Ah ok, that does sound a shame. I agree it's one of the things I love too that you can do a lot of things in any order you want. I'm really looking forward to it, already bought the game so I'm ready to go as soon as I finish DS2. One thing I thought might be cool for DS3 is to get more involved with the online aspect of it, maybe do some PvP with viewers or co-op with viewers, could maybe do it on a live stream. Not sure of the details yet but I thought it'd be cool if I could play online with some people.

Yeah, that was painful to watch lol! That Bonfire that you could see through the wall but couldn't figure out how to get to, all you had to do was hit the wall with your sword and it would have smashed open. ;D

I don't want to spoil too much, but of the last two Lord Souls that you need, the one you are heading towards is much more difficult than the other one. At least getting to the boss anyway. You should take another look around Majula and you might find another path!

Cheers Shadow, this is one of those ones where it's painful for me to watch back too lol cos I'm sick there thinking 'god why didn't you just do that!' etc. I won't spoiler too much but I have only just recorded the next 2 episodes and I feel like I've really got a lot done in those 2 eps

================================

Yesss, we've got our Dream Nail repaired now AND we learn 2 new sword abilities.

Some amazing little cut scenes in this episode too that make for a really lovely thumbnail

lol I'll watch it tonight and see if I can help. I assume you're looking for the path to the last Lord Soul though, and for that you need to look around in the same area that you fought the Chariot boss.

Edit:

Just watched it, yes that is what you need to do. Also you do have three of the Lord Souls already, for some very strange reason The Duke's Dear Freja soul only looks like a regular boss soul but it is a Lord Soul.

I'm sure I said this recently but the 2nd boss in THIS episode is definitely the hardest boss I've ever faced in Hollow Knight by a mile

My playthrough is a modded HD and true widescreen experience similar to what we're likely to see for the remasters

I meant to reply here and completely forgot. You probably figured it out by now, but in the room where killing enemies makes the doors open up, the very first door on the right when you enter the room is the one that you need to go through.
Title: Re: ScouseMouse - Retro Gamer
Post by: ScouseMouse on April 20, 2018, 18:46:08 PM
Thanks man, I didn't figure it out myself but people told me. The reason I didn't do it myself is cos first time round I kept running right past loads of the statues and nothing happened so I assumed those ones just didn't wake up. God knows what i had to do to get them to notice me

Here's me cracking it anyway and making short work of Drangleic Castle... next up is the Shrine of Amana
which apparently is one of the most horrible areas in all of Dark Souls games so that should be fun!

Post by: Shadowrunner on April 20, 2018, 19:22:13 PM
Ahh, Shrine of Amana. . .  yeah you're gonna have fun there lol.

It's actually not too bad of an area if you have a bow to snipe guys at a distance. Without one though, it's pretty much pure hell. Good luck!

Post by: ScouseMouse on April 20, 2018, 20:36:05 PM
Hmm, sounds lovely!! I don't usually use bows but you're not the first person to strongly suggest I give them a go for this area.

Yeah took a bit of artistic licence with the title lol but to be fair, it does get voted the best game of all time A LOT, but yeah it's very subjective.

I am an absolutely HUGE fan of turn based RPGs though, FF7, Dragon Quest 8, Grandia 2, Skies or Arcadia, I can't get enough of them, so I'm expecting to rate it highly

Episode 2 of just went up actually, where we get a whole new team to fight alongside us, and Marle is doing another disappearing act!
